Nice read. I've always liked Legowelt and most of the cats from that area so I'm glad this was published.
Also, I was a bit inspired by the wall papers in the background. I'm not sure how much of it is actually real but if it is real wall paper, that has added a real nice touch. A bonus to a place with great kit anyone would love to spend hours, days, months, years in.

Real sign of character there.

Got to love Legowelt. Has a genuine passion for the old stuff but doesn't mythologize it like so many other producers and listeners do nowadays. Love his straight talking opinions about the whole production process. A guy that is clearly into what he's doing without being up his own arse as well.

Nothin' but love for Legowelt!
Nice feature.

I'm guessing this pic of Xosar was also taken in Danny's studio too?

Great read, big fan of his especially after he gave away The Teac Life, though Flight of the Jupiters is my fave track from him. It does seem kind of weird to keep around an old Commodore computer unless you are trying to impose limitations on yourself. It is a shame that Commodore & OS/2 etc. never made it, as it would be nice to see what they would offer today in this polarized mac / pc world.

Anyone into this and synthesis generally should check out his website - www.legowelt.com/
Full deets on his synth collection and also loads of audio samples.

Not 100% up on all his stuff but ultimately he is a fucking legend.

respect!

i didn't realize legowelt was such an open-minded and down-to-earth producer. i pictured him more as an "analogue is better" kinda guy.

Really nice read that cheers.

Reinforces the idea that it's not what you've got but how you use what you've got. Learn what you've got rather than chasing the latest new thing/fad.

Good to know stuff from Legowelt. Prooving that you don't need alot of electronic gear/set-up before the production and not to spend masses of time mastering after.

Great work

I would like it in between 126 & 134 BPMs please.

Being a graduate of Full Sail University and 2006's Session Recording "Project Mix Competition," I would completely disagree with the statment on mastering. Mastering is a key element in all styles of music, electronic or not. It makes the difference between a good record and a great record. I've met and studied under some of the best engineers/artists in the world and not one of them would agree with that. He thinks its overrated because he's not skilled enough to properly master his music, it takes years to learn those skills, it doesn't happen overnight. There's a lot more than throwing your mix into a session and running it through some plug-ins. How your room is shaped and how your auralex is placed will affect your capabilities to properly master your tracks.

The guy who went to a university that is focused solely on sound technology disagrees with the statement on mastering, what a fucking surprise.

great interesting interview, legowelt and his other projects are some of the best electronic music of the last 10 years. I love his style, especially the acid tracks and the Dario Argento soundtrack sounding music he makes, the Squadra Blanco album was insanely good.

This is the absolute dream edition of Machine Love, sorta like the Rick James Behind the Music. Great job! Crazy down to earth dude who lives and breathes this shit every second.

You are obviously taking this too personally, but I think his larger point is that mastering is of minimal importance compared to the process of actually CREATING music. It is important of course, but many people rely too much on the notion that someone else will make your record sound good, when really its about making the good record yourself to begin with.

I have the utmost respect for mastering engineers, it is a thankless job and you will need to get used to that.

Great guy, telling it straight up. I am very curious about his thoughts on the "spiritual/mystical" side of music. Why not ask him about it! That's good stuff too!

i really have admired for a while that he is not an 'analogue is better'-type elitist & he is Into VA's, ROMplers, digital synths/workstations, cheap drum-machines, Casios et cetera and stuff most people wouldn't want or deem out-moded. to me i think that is awesome. i think you get the best of both worlds when you combine hardware w/ software, analog w/ digital, cheap w/ expensive. & just focusing more on utilitarian functionalism and just what works and what sounds good.

i miss Astro Unicorn Radio too. peace...

Good interview - Quite a coincidence that there are similarities regarding what I would've said in an interview. delay effects, dj mixer, star trek, mastering,4 tracker, dirty sounds,8 bit. However I don't have the apetite for collecting a huge a mount of synths.
A 303 groovebox and Roland SH2000 from 1973 was more than enough for me back in the day to use as a extra. I had fun doing that Live Set that one night between the sets of Jeff Mills and Dj Hell on I Love Techno as a messenger before the 80s techno revival started ..thinking about to go public with my live set on Beatport
after 12 years :)

The point I think he is making is not that mastering has no use, but that from his point of view it can stunt the creative and compositional process, which I would agree with from my experience. Mastering is obviously commonplace in the releasing of the large majority of music, but is it not inspiring to hear such a notable producer bypass these conventions because of personal and workflow choices? I do not think that his productions suffer from his bypassing of mastering, in fact I'd say it gives him an air of individuality.
