LWE presents
Hotflush Recordings
Saturday 3rd November
10pm to 6am
Shoreditch Warehouse Party

LWE are excited to present the first ever UK label night of Hotflush Recordings as well as the debut of the full Scuba live show. This will be Scuba’s only London performance this year.

The Hotflush Recordings label, under the stewardship of label boss Scuba (Paul Rose), is one of the most important new figureheads of underground electronic music to emerge in recent years, releasing everything from techno (Sigha, George FitzGerald etc) to some of the most experimental and important music of the past few years by artists such as Joy Orbison, Untold, Mount Kimbie, and Sepalcure.

LINE UP:

Scuba (live & DJ set)
George Fitzgerald
Lando Kal
Locked Groove
Chris Stanford

SCUBA
Even though he no longer lives in the country, it’s hard to imagine what London’s musical landscape would look like without the influence of Scuba. In 2007 Rose made the move from London to electronic mecca Berlin resulting in an incredible rise to prominence highlighted by him holding a residency at Berlin’s legendary techno temple Berghain and occupying the #25 spot in the readership-voted Resident Advisor Top DJ poll for 2010 and 2011.

TICKETS – ON SALE FRIDAY 27TH JULY
Early Bird Tickets: £15 / Standard £20

George Fitzgerald is one of electronic music’s most exciting talents and we have him for Hotflush...

The last few years have been as experimentally freewheeling as any in the history of electronic music, and there are few finer examples to support that argument than London-born and bred beatsmith, George FitzGerald. With releases on Hotflush, Aus, and his own imprint, ManMakeMusic, his productions combine with exceptional style and grace both the warmer, melodic sides of house and garage with the more heated, pounding drum patterns of dub step and techno. All the best producers have hallmarks, and FitzGerald’s are evident in his measurement, his awareness of light and space and his use of searing chord lines. His is the lightness that makes the darkness, seem darker.

Lando Kal

His music is a freaked out juggernaut of electronic music, primarily experimenting with various mutations of house. Dense instrumentation, analog synth and drum machine work, complex melodies, and creeping basslines are pooled from his musical obsessions with 90's RnB, classic house, freestyle, garage, Detroit Techno, early synthesizer music, Timbaland, and… to be honest, everything in between. An integral player in both San Francisco and New York’s underground club scenes ( Previously resident at Cassette NYC with Machinedrum, Praveen and Falty DL) . Now living in Berlin moving from San Francisco via New York City, Lando embodies a unique style all his own. Soulful, emotive and slightly outside the box, retaining a crucial dancefloor sensibility throughout.

Here is a mix we found on Xlr8r from 2011: www.xlr8r.com/news/2011/06/download-lando-kals-direct-curre

The sound problems for the Harvey show were due to him bringing his own system...

We have had our excellent independent sound engineer to spec Oval Space prior to our show there. He went in on the secretsundaze night and said the sound was excellent and that the venue's new DnB system is great. To ensure it can cope with Scuba's range we're bringing in some extra subs. He will be in all day setting up the rig (which will be at one end of the venue rather than corner stacks like DJ Harvey did with his independent system). Our engineer does the sound for many nights at Brixton Academy as well as all our LWE nights in 2012 and is excellent and knowledgeable. As with all LWE shows, we always go the extra mile to ensure that the sound, production and all the little details are taken care of.

We can't wait!

Fantastic night!
Quite a fan of Hotflush so had been looking forward to this for quite a while.
Got there for Locked Groove - first time I've seen him and he got the night rolling nicely!
I thought Scuba's live show was great - the 'light show' setup thing was not as prominent as I was expecting (thought he spent a lot of it in the dark?!) but it should have always been playing second fiddle to the music which was excellent. Was much more varied than I thought it was gonna be with tracks/edits off both recent albums and also some SCB cuts in there.
George FitzG played a great set, thoroughly enjoyed that.
Scuba to close and the last half an hour of Scuba and FitzG b2b was a really good way to end. They looked as if they were having a lot of fun up there - don't think I've seen Mr Rose smile that much ever. Not even sure if I've seen him smile...

Also, I thought the venue was great - except maybe the blokes toilets.
I was a bit apprehensive after hearing about the Dirtybird party earlier in the year (bad sound and a sweatbox) and then the DJ Harvey night recently (although this was because Harvey brought his own sound system and set it up badly) but on Saturday night, I thought it was spot on. Would happily go back there.

sorry but this was a pretty terrible night overall. the organisers ought to be embarrassed at charging £25 for entry on the door.

locked groove's set seemed to be composed almost entirely of breakdowns, which sounded pathetic on the weak soundsystem. scuba's live set was also pretty dull. fitzgerald got things rolling better, thankfully, but i couldn't help but think the soundsystem wasn't helping him. scuba's dj set was better than his live set but still did not justify the ticket price.

you need to sort out the sound in this place. the sound is a million times better at corsica studios, plastic people, fabric, etc. there was no weight to the sound at all.

the crowd was also mostly nan-kids taking photos of each other and uploading them straight to bebo. too mainly postmodern haircuts, beanie hats, and sunglasses-indoors. also plenty of joey essexes sitting on each others' shoulders and wandering round ketted up to the eyeballs.

will not be returning to oval space.

This to remember:

1) Scuba's live act. AMAZING
2) Scuba and FitzGerald b2b
3) Lando Kal. Nice surprise, really digged his set.

Things to forget:

1) Locked Groove. Sorry, didn't get the idea, the choices, the sequence, nothing.

Yes, the soundsystem could be a lot (a lot) better, but gladly, I like to go upfront and hear and see things from close range. But I recon that for those who opted to stay in the back, they couldn't get the whole thing as they should.

Apart from this, Oval Space is a really nice venue. Space, both in and outside, nice conditions, well runned bar (quick service), no security issues whatsoever. Toilets could be more or bigger, yes.

It was good to see so many people waiting for Scuba's performance.
