RA Feature
One of techno's most fascinating producers (and frustrating interviewees) takes time out from staring at a wall to talk to RA's Todd L. Burns.

I'm sure "frustrating interviewee" is being very, very polite.

Things we've learnt in this Shed interview - Techno will be dead in 20yrs. It's the final countdown.

Arrogant or not, he compensates every bit of his shit with each record.

And before the New school-Old school techno war begins, any chance for the 3rd track on his last mix? soundcloud.com/r_co/shed-la-boum-de-luxe-18-08 TIP!

watching paint dry is the new techno

Arrogant?

The man is efficient and straightforward, with a surprising absence of bullshit in what he says. Why is everyone supposed to do magic tricks, a backflip and reveal the Meaning Of Life in an interview?

Now, reading interviews with the Belleville Three (actually, mainly May) or Mills, those are usually pretensious and/or arrogant snoozefests filled with crap.

I've read a lot of interviews from different artists who try to be witty or throw in some deep thoughts like great philosophers. If you can make the bass kick and tune your hi-hats right, it doesn't mean you're a great mind. It means you're a decent techno musician.

I think Shed is not arrogant nor frustrating. He is just being humble. He knows there are people who are better philosophers than he is. He also knows there is not much new to be told about the Berlin scene as everybody have been talking about it for few years now. Mr. Pawlowitz goes to his studio and does what he does best: music. Enough bullshit.

We do. And your previous posts uses the correct word, he actually seems humble, in my opinion too.

To me he doesn't necessarily come across as either particularly humble or arrogant - just that he doesn't like doing interviews much!

Quite the character. Not in a bad way. If you want to read an interview full of pretentious garbage check out the Nicolas Jaar interview. http://www.clashmusic.com/feature/ghosts-and-machines-nicolas-jaar

"(and frustrating interviewees)"
Can't agree more.

"To me he doesn't necessarily come across as either particularly humble or arrogant - just that he doesn't like doing interviews much!"
WORD! I guess he don't like interviews with the same questions all the time.

Yeah, and from that I get a feeling about his attitude towards what he does.

A good insight into the guy, I thought

Legend! Legend! Legend! One of the best interviews I've read and why I don't go out anymore either. As real as it gets.

there has been an interview on lwb some time ago.. he sounded the same.. im not saying the mind should be first before the music.. but i really dont get it, if he doesnt like techno nor going out, nor listening, well hes just a businessman then and a good one, thats not exactly bad... what i really didnt like was his 'techno' talk, ok he has listened to techno longer than most of us, but to say something is dead or will die is like mayan calendar predicting world will end.. how many times already people said that techno will die and how many times after that they enjoyed some new artist or even an old track...

Honestly, I think the language barrier has something to do with it. The guy doesn't like doing interviews in general, you add the language barrier and then you get this. I read an interview with him in german once and it was a lot, lot better than this.

Why is everyone confused? and taking the guys words so serious. He's obvious laughing at the whole thing totally fucking with everyone hes a clown ... Definitely a cool producer but not cool enough to dictate a change in a culture. If JEFF MILLS had spoke that way i might listen a lot more carefully . Techno 4/4 beats wont fade away it will just morph into something else and comeback. music always reinvents its self back to its self. CYCLE 30

Every single fucker on this board (staff, contributors and forum members) and every other fucker in dance music could take a leaf out of Rene's book.

This stuff is dumb fucking music to have a good time to. End of story.

Anyone on a ego trip self reliant on a drugged up crowd to reaffirm there predictable 4/4 insecurity and thereafter preaches life101 or goes on and on about this music needs to check into a psychiatric ward.stat

Judging by the things he says he might wrap up his techno career in the next couple of years... What's the point on doing something you don't like or believe in anymore?

I don't get it, if a dj shares his thoughts, vision or passion about techno he is pretentious? philosopher? and if he doesn't so it means arrogance? boring? crap?
come on... djs have different approaches and personalities and that's a great thing.

Frustrating interviewee? RA, you ever been interviewed in a foreign language? About something quite abstract like making music? As far as I know, they learnt Russian at school in East Germany, with English being a non-compulsory second language. Woony's right, in the current Groove (in German) there's a much more in-depth interview.

The guy is not arrogant at all.

But it so mental how somebody original like Shed who is coming up with something interesting is not touring as much as he should be.

These days there is a new dj every week coming up with the same house music, following the same trends, and trying to look cool and getting tour dates like Madonna. House music scene is beyond fucked.

But in the underground, things are exciting. But those Djs you won't find headlining gigs all over the place.

There are monopolies in dance music these days.

I liked the interview... and someone above said it quite well, it's just music to have a good time to.

Wyndell Long said the same thing in an interview ages ago (can't find a link to it). Basically, dance music is just there to make you move... no story, no deeper meaning... it's just meant to make you want to dance.

I think that's what Shed is getting at. It's not some deep UR-style political message or some story-telling hour... it's just some 4/4 beats that make you want to groove.

Blah

that was painful to read.

Quality interview. I think there is a lot to be learned by reading between the lines on this one.

SHED speaks his mind, straight forward and no bullshit. The man's music tells enough for those who want to listen...

I don't believe Shed. If he's really that disinterested he wouldn't make music and do the interview at all. I'm sure there's some real emotions there but regardless of what he says he does care.

the man is simply doing his thing and not really giving a fuck who thinks what, and what is this or that scene doing...it is just plain straightforward German attitude that is much respectable. nowadays it is so much about ass kissing and so forth and 'bringing stuff to the next level' and everybody making music is like such a complex personality and influenced by 12481395 genres (ps -..i'm suffering the same disease, i know)
obviously he is doing music because he is enjoying it and he knows his niche
quite refreshing to read something so down to earth

^+1
The interview was kinda what i was expecting, very like his music. To the point, little flair or meaning, sparse with flashes of intensity. I've seen a couple of his live gigs and they did leave me with a feeling of 'what? was that it?' but also i felt i heard something different.

It feels like he really doesn't give a f'#k what anyone thinks which rings true with a lot of venerable 'ravers' who've seen scenes come and go. Techno being de rigeuer in any clubs calender worth its coolness today can be mystifying to old schoolers when it is just music to dance hard and spaced to in the early hours.

I adore the fact that the genre that is closest to my heart has gained mass credibility and recognition worldwide but i also adore cantankerous, insular and anticool old technoheads like Rene who couldn't give a toss what zee hipsters think of him. Rant/critique over. Long Live Techno:)
