 | RA Review The xx's first album was the whisper heard 'round the world, a fashionably sparse disc of distilled love songs made more powerful by their stark surroundings. The London group has seen success after success since the release of their 2009 debut, their music equally suited for soundtracking cinema as..

| #4 / Wed, 05 Sep 12 22:49 Great album and, to be fair, a well written review. However, i don't really see why this is on Resident Advisor? Not really in the scope of (the slightly more obscure side of) electronic dance music.

| #5 / Thu, 06 Sep 12 09:51 Ryce loves writing reviews of shitty pop albums. He wishes he was a writer for Pitchfork...oh wait he is.
On a related note, who thought it would be a good idea to have your main UK Bass reviewer be some kid from Canada who's only connection to the scene is 2nd hand through 'indie' blogs. Good call there Resident Pitchfork.
With this + the TNGHT review (which should have been nothing more than a 1/5), I think its safe to say its the beginning of the end for RA. Either the reviewers are getting paid under the table (quite possible with Warp..) or idiots are at the helm (quite possible with Ryce...)
Anyway, to the matter at hand. This is a terrible / generic album of mediocre pop songs. BUT at least Jamie XX is busy doing this shit than his other (equally terrible) hobby: exploiting the newest trends in dance music to make a quick buck

| #12 / Thu, 06 Sep 12 16:16 Andrew Ryce is really hit or miss, in my honest opinion. Sometimes he's on point and other times I feel like he's just part of the hype machine. However, he's only one dude in the whole spectrum of the reviewing/criticism universe (which is a kind of pointless universe, if you ask me - those who can't do; review ). Why let it get to you? I also don't see how this why it's a problem that this album is on RA. The more the merrier, right?

The only time pop albums should be reviewed here is when they are absolutely massacred (like the infamous Skrillex or Crystal Castles II reviews) or very unique (like The Knife), otherwise there is no point. There's a million blogs run by suburban American kids that are dedicated to this type of generic crap. I'm way more baffled by the score (4/5..for a generic mainstream pop album, are you kidding me...) than the inclusion. I clicked the link hoping it would be a takedown of the "indie" / hipster hype around this shit (just to be clear, "indie" doesn't exist anymore, Pitchfork is as commercial as MTV these days), but then I saw Ryce's name and knew it would be a disaster. Also, just to put things into perspective, when you click the album reviews link you're reminded that this got the same score as DeepChord - Sommer. Let that sink in for a second.

Did you register just to moan about this? I don't keep up to date with other indie blogs / websites so I only realised the XX had a new album through this review and I will check it out. Seriously, grow up.

| #16 / Thu, 06 Sep 12 22:34 ^ Well made point. Slightly torn. A bit wet, nice though, but compared to for instance King Midas Sound as an example, (See also - because it's gorgeous - King Midas Sound Mix) just not that interesting, a bit drab. Sorry The xx. x

Getting all information from one source is the dumbest thing to do... for anything. The RA is not God,, diversify- you're missing out on tons of good music by not , lots of great albums never make it on here, some go on to be on the RA top 10 lists.

| #23 / Sat, 08 Sep 12 17:49 I love the album usually when I'm not in the best mood. After coming home tired in the evening sounds nice - but - with each listen I'm kind of 'irritated' how same some tracks sounds. Is it just me? Its good album, without a doubt, but sometimes I'm just not excited about it that much.

if by "connections" you mean bandwagonning the genre to make a quick buck, then yes, Jamie XX has tons of "connections" to UK Bass

| #25 / Mon, 10 Sep 12 12:28 the cynical attitude toward music some people don't like on here is far worse then the indie and hipster cultures they criticise this music as being. the idea of Jamie XX doing anything for the sake of making money is ludicrous. He makes music he likes and you don't like, and it doesn't go any further than that.
Will reserve my opinions on this album until I listen to it, but I am very confident in Jamie's ability. I have high hopes! only really got into their first album after listing to Jamie XX's Gil Scott album and his Essential Mix.
