Thanks to the kind editors at Germany's Groove magazine, we can now reproduce the results of the Groove Magazine Reader's Poll 2005 which were published in the January 2006 issue.

Fast becoming THE dance music poll to watch, in recent years it has seemed like readers of Groove have become one step ahead of the game, making the rest of us feel like we're playing catch up. For instance, in the 2004 Awards more than twelve months ago Dominik Eulberg and Mathew Johnson took out Best Newcomer and Best Producer respectively.

However onto the results for 2005 and as expected the winners were very much geared towards the minimal house, techno and electro camps with plenty of German artists filling out many of the positions in each category.

Predictably, Cologne beast Kompakt took out Best National Label with Richie Hawtin's m_nus taking the Best International Label ahead of James Holden's Border Community.

Dominik Eulberg, who last year was voted Best Newcomer, stepped up to take Best Producer from runner-up Trentemoeller, who in turn picked up Best Newcomer ahead of Oliver Koletzki and young guns Alex Under, John Dahlback and Alex Smoke.

Oliver Koletzki walked away (perhaps surprisingly) with Best Track for 'Der Muckenschwarm' in front of more likely contenders Ame's 'Rej' and Mathew Johnson's 'Marionette' while Luciano's remix of Argy's 'Love Dose' was voted Best Remix.

Richie Hawtin's DE9:Transitions was awarded Best Compilation in a vote which saw three of the Top 5 compilations coming from Sven Vath's Cocoon Recordings while Isolee's 'We Are Monster' pipped Depeche Mode's 'Playing The Angel' to take Best Album.

Unlike many UK and US polls, four of the Top 20 places in the Best International DJ vote went to females in Magda, Miss Kittin, Jennifer Cardini and Chloe. Ada came No.4 in the Best Live Act category which was won by Alter Ego with Anthony Rother as runner-up.

No massive surprises there, given the German readership...

1st & 2nd places are the usual suspects.

though, to me there are some surprises in... imo seeing james holden entering the poll as #4 international dj is quite an achievement. also border community as #2 label...

another note: the poll clearly reflects the gaining influence of minimal on the german scene.

interesting thing: the "Best Producer" section is quite shuffled according to last year's result.

mmmhh, no, some suprises but you know my "high interest" of what is coming out of Germany at the moment - for me BY FAR the most interesting stuff Headphones

xflow: agreed james holden surprised me also, good work

I would also agree with you DZ in that this poll also reflects my current musical preferences, but that's not to say there was any shocks. In my opinion Richie winning this award is as predictable as Teisto and DJ Mag. I talk not of deserved winners but just of predictability

I agree with that but Richie IS one of the very very few people (at this moment) who are actually doing something interesting

I don't think Holden is that surprising - he's booking through Cocoon these days, and i know he's been promoting himself pretty heavily in Germany recently.

More surprising to me is Laurent Garnier @ #2 intl DJ - one can easily argue that a top 5 placing for Garnier in any poll is justified, just that it is a selection that doesn't seem to "gel" with the rest of the results in the poll to be honest.

I also find it hard to believe Cocoon Club placed above Robert Johnson, U60311 Watergate or Weekend, never mind any number of other German clubs I haven't been to.

Best DJ National

01. Sven Vath
02. Ricardo Villalobos
03. Dominik Eulberg
04. DJ Koze
05. Hell

I thought Ricardo Villalobos is from Chile, so why is he a local when he should be an International ? Head Scratch

Ricardo Villalobos: Biography

I expect he has a German passport if he has a German mother, and has been living in Germany since the 1970s? That probably qualifies him as "National"

"at the age of nine a heavy Abba phase startet and Ric was totally in love with Agnetha".....

sweet!

He has lived near FRA since he was 3 - the man is a brilliant musician, I don't care where he is from Slayer
