"filter" is a fairly generic term; an EQ is usually just a string of certain types of filters (peak or shelf) in series.

You have obviously never synthesized anything, you'd get nowhere without filters. Also, they serve a different purpose to EQs when djing as the cut-off point is continuous and not fixed like an EQ, allowing for greater flexibility while layering tracks.
