Can you really say Carola is techno any more? Seems to be playing more straight-up tech house than anything.

The question is not "is he techno" but rather "what is techno nowadays?"

Yes its faster, darker, more atmospherical but I would tend place him under the techno lean more than house.

Tech House? lol.. maybe.. Still... his roots were techno ... DJ

Thank you for this RA

Yea I'm well aware of what his roots are I'm just saying to refer to him today as a techno DJ can be misleading but like you said the definition of techno is very loose in 2012. I'm just basing this on videos I've see/sets I've heard (like his RA podcast). I mean it's pretty housy stuff you can't deny that.

got the chance to saw him at robert johnson (frankfurt) last april, layers upon layers of shitty minimal house and some FX on top... I cant speak for his early days, but i've seen him playing a handful of times in the past five years and ive never been much impressed.

actually, it always was quite boring and uninspiring. as his latest album, "play it loud".

Nice!

Im sorry but will agree with the rest....Dead repetitive loops...No art whatsoever..That is why i moved to techno and artists that actually are not followers of the cash...Sorry marco

maybe his style it's no more like real techno (liebing, mills, ecc...) but he's still one of the best. he fills dance floors and keep you dancing for hours. i just respect him so much. : )

first of all...his fulllength Album was on M-nus and not Plus8!

second of all...back then when he was living in Frankfurt he was playin hardtechno for long long years...he became more minimal from 2004 onwards!

So please if you give infos...look that they are reasonable and actually true as well!

Have a listen to this.

Nowadays my interest in Carola has also diminished for a few years, but when i heard him play at Shockers in 2003 (Rai Amsterdam) he was surely one of the most technically gifted 3-deck dj's on this planet.

Thanks for the heads-up! I have fixed the first issue in the text. With regard to the second, in the interview Marco describes that, yes, he was playing hard techno for many years while in Frankfurt but that his attitude changed when he moved there - and it was this move that was the spark to become more international / his sound to eventually change.

glad i didnt have to be the first one to come on and say it

'wishy washy, bland, minimal, tech, efx' etc etc

dance music for the camera phone wielding, rave once-or-twice a year, ibiza massive.

when I saw him last I suspect he played the same song for at leats 4 hours. Suicide seemed like a nice option. Too bad room 2 at Fabric was also shit on the night. If only I had left earlier.

Was there as well this set has a legendary status on the net. A half full room and he played like nothing else it was amazing(oliver ho after him as well) Also once in Frankfurt a party with Beyer, Lekebusch, Umek & Carola. All of them technically gifted dj's he won the pot that night. There is nothing left of that now a days...

Learning To Be A Machine.
Anyway, the interview is really interesting. It's a fact there's a shift in his sound and he's giving his point of view on this. He seems honest. He's also speaking about production's ability while touring too much and what a minimal record can do on a good system ...

It's not the first time I like a ra exchange about someone I don't know or follow at all. Even if I'm not into their actual sound, I like to hear their point of view about themselves, their story, their ideas about djaying and electronic dance music overall.

This one with marco carola is in my opinion really good. Thanks RA.

One great record played is more valuable than one whole average set.............
