NPR considers EDM and what makes it different from other dance music genres, talking to RA contributor Philip Sherburne and looking at Richie Hawtin's new CNTRL series.
Agreed, and even though I'm not a huge fan of Richie Hawtin, its great that he's trying to establish a wider culture of dance music lovers in the US. If people are interested it doesn't really matter whats happens to 'EDM', it will just grow another head.
I don't think the EDM (such a BS term, but I won't go into that) craze at the moment is necessarily a bad thing. You have to start somewhere, and if that happens to be Skrillex or Swedish House Mafia then so be it. The complacent lot will be content listening to that until they tire of it and move on to whatever the next big fad is, the more musically curious lot will dig deeper. Who knows, the next great house or techno producer/DJ in 10 years might be attending EDM concerts now. I think we have to look at the bigger picture here.
