Hot Natured & Ali Love - Benediction cover
RA Review
Sometimes dance music is pop music, whether we'd like to admit it or not. It's a minefield out there, dangerous enough that Jamie Jones felt the need to defend himself publicly for his latest single hitting the UK Top 40. But "Benediction," the newest missive from his Hot Natured project with labe..

I don't follow Hot Natured stuff but I listened to this to see what all the fuss is about and I like it. Seems like a nice pop track to me.

you know it's a pop song when GEMA blocks the YouTube video.

Let us not forget the 90's era when dance music was plentiful in the UK charts, and what a great era that was!

Love the track! It's arrangement is more pop though ;)

MK needs to re-invent himself. His sound of the 90s does not work anymore and he's losing it in the 00's. Where his riffs and chords sounded phat in the 90s it's now cheap ass. Hopefully he will find a new direction which will bring him back where he was.

Not taken with this chart throwback that people are nattering on about, if I'm being honest. The 90s were a different time and rave in its more elated/novel (as opposed to bro) form was a great deal more popular. Most of the stuff that made the UK charts in the early 90s (hardcore, anyone?) had this quasi-fractured pop sensibility to it. This just screams professionalism gone awry. Still, might be nice to hear some actual house music on university nights, even if the vocal makes me want to rip out my ears. Then again, I've always been more techno than I ever have been house...

Not a bad point, although I don't really like this song.

A good pop song, but not for my ears. Specially because of the vocals, ugh... But congrats to Jamie and Lee anyway.

Great tune, great time at The Standard with Ali Love singing it live :-)

Am I only the one who hates this tune just same old same old from Hot Creations and just proves my point was always going down the chart music line.

Ali Love's voice is nails on a chalkboard to my ears. Whiny.

I've made this point before but: it's hit the UK Top 40 because the majority of the EDM scene enjoy the track and it has the potential to attract those not usually into house. It doesn't take that many sales to get in the charts any more, so it's in no way an indicator of "selling out", it's just an approachable track. And that should be celebrated.

My two cents on the single itself: soulful, charming, addictive and beautiful. Big ups to HC!

No, it hit the top 40 because its been promoted / advertised / shoved down people's throats like any other mainstream, commercial, big-label crap. There is nothing special about this song in any way, all it proves is that if you get something in front of people enough, they will think they like it.

I would say shame on Andrew Ryce for giving this drivel anything above a 1.5, but I know he loves shitty, accessible pop. I'm just surprised he can get internet reception up in Canada. I heard the igloos get especially cold this time of year and everyone knows modems are spotty in the cold.

I figured Andy was too busy carpet bagging the latest worn-out southern EDM trends to be kicking it in an igloo. Still like 70 down here!

personal attack on the writer aside, i agree with this post. i find JJ's public statement that they weren't shooting for Top 40 a bit disingenuous since a few times when i logged into Facebook, there was a Hot Creation's status promoting the single sitting at the top of my feed as a sponsored post, with a link to iTunes and the usual suspects.

it's OK to want a crossover hit. just don't try to have your cake and eat it too, saying you didn't want this, when your label's dropping good money on promotion in borderline-commercial channels. i don't think "sell out" has to be a dirty word - when you're afraid of it is when you've really sold out.

personally i find Benediction more in the vein of bubblegum-underground that's been coming out lately, often under the guise of nu-disco or one single catchy drum groove - the vocals here, rather than striking me as "smooth", are a whiny grate on my ears, cringe-worthy. and while it's rather catchy, i don't see it standing the test of time. but that's usually the case in any era - most productions that people go crazy for at the time don't make it through the years.

great track, good review. let's be clear, it's catchy, big deal, it's the kind of track you want to play first in your city, or save for the end of a night sometime special (and yes, for some of you not at all!). too catchy to play too often, and one to get bored of quickly but nothing for purists to lose sleep over. we survived 10 city's 'that's the way love is' and robin s' 'love 4 love' just fine...and we have suffered greater musical tragedies than these.

i wouldn't underestimate it's longevity either. as i said, this track will fade soon, but it is also clear it's an instant classic for it's type...people will pull this track out here and there for years. personally, i like a good vocal, and though i find the lyrics ridiculous, the melody is catchy and one some of us can't help but sing along to; even if in a "cheesy, hate to like you" kind of way...guilty pleasure for sure!
