The seventh chapter of our Podcast comes from Resident Advisor columnist Bill Patrick. Back on deck and just about recovered from a big week in Miami with the Robots crew, Bill's exclusive mix features new tracks from Âme, Junion, Baby Ford & Zip, as well as the lush Duplex on Clone.

how is this anything like pierce, pig n dan, kiki, dygas, tolfrey, etc. besides being categorized as electronic music?

whats up

this mix could have pretty much been taken from a set of mine at Robots. I understand people may hear similar sounds from past podcast but its all a matter of interpretation.

I am drawn to the more melodic sounds of techno with warm funkier basslines that chug along. Everyone before me did a fantastic job and there's definitely pressure to put together something that stands out a bit. So hopefully i was able to accomplish that. If not, it's ok cus i love each and evry track on this mix and thank the artist like franco, george s, and alphahouse for supplying me with some great music.

enjoy!

It seems that a lot of people are complaining about how all the podcasts are sounding the same-ish, but this is the sound that everyone is playing now, i'm not saying bill is doing what everyone else is doing, but i guess it can be considered similar, regardless it's a great mix. But to be honest, until this minimal wave, most electronic music was sounding the same.

thats all I am saying.
noted, it is slightly more melodic than other   Resident Advisor   podcasts and thats probably why it has appealed to me more than most of the prior attempts.
once again thanks for the mix.

Wouldn't be too hard for the bods at Resident Advisor to stick their neck's out and put something different on would it though...

Since the 'Essential Mix' on Radio 1 turned into a steaming pile of shite there's room for Resident Advisor to really turn into THE essential series...

There are so so so many other genres that don't rely on the 4 to the floor kick y'know... How bout a 'lil D&B or even a downbeat mix ina' k&d style...

Not more minimal bleepy bloopyness. Sound of now or not...

??

Thanks for the feedback guys - Its always appriciated.

I can confirm that there will be a lot of variation over coming months.

With a mix every week it represents a real oppourtunity to showcase a huge variety of sounds, something that we try and do throughout the site on an editorial level.

Rest assured the series will be full of new and wonderful sounds that may not appeal to all of you every week, but will open our ears to the full spectrum of electronic sounds.

but this is the sound that everyone is playing now,

if by everyone you mean the minimal/ techno crew, then yes you're spot on.

but if by everyone you mean the all encompassing 'electronic' brigade then you're wrong. Not EVERYONE is playing that style of music. The style of mixes we're getting is very techno centric, and whilst I love my techno in all forms, I'd still like to hear some variety.

Some djs I'd personally love to hear a mix from -and that aren't playing the style of music currently being fed to us weekly would be;

Mike Monday
Tim Paris
King Roc
Justice
Damian Lazarus
Death from Above 1979
DJ Shadow
Jamie T
Martin Eyerer
Vitalic

I would also love to hear from these guys at some point after a bit of a breather from the current genre;

Luciano
Pier Bucci *sigh* *double sigh*
Ricardo Villalobos

I think it's awesome that MinimalAdvisor are giving us free podcasts every week. I have also been clubbing for a long time and listening to electronic music for even longer. The one thing that can set this website apart is by demonstrating the diversity in electronic music by delivering mixes from other genres apart from bleepy low tempo techno. Sure this is a great mix from Bill, but geez, through no fault of his - the MinimalAdvisor crew have left me feeling like this ancient genre is the only thing is anyone is playing out there. You need to get out more if that is the case.

Feed us breaks, d'n'b, turntablism, house, electro, trance - anything, just don't forget that there are a lot more styles out there right now and not just the sound you guys are flogging.

Wouldn't it be nice, after the minimal renaissance has died down, to say that Resident Advisor supported OTHER styles during the minimal occupation? Right now Resident Advisor is the mate who has racked off with his new German girlfriend and forgotten his mates.

Don't forget us RA...

i think they've done well with getting Dan Ghenacia up next. Sure to please alot of people as he is a wicked dj with lots of funk and soul to his music.

thanks to  Resident Advisor  for giving me this opportunity and lots of love to everyone who enjoyed this mix and those who didnt.

at the end of the day i'm playing music that moves me. If it has a profound affect on others than thats amazing. If it doesnt, than there are plenty of other Dj's out there that will. Find one and go with it.

Bill, after re-reading my post, I should perhaps clear up that I found your mix to be the most colourful of the recent podcasts, with warm melodies and lush synths amongst the sparse soundscapes. I in no way feel that your mix did not hit the mark. In fact, i have listened to it again today, and enjoyed it much more on further listening. Hopefully, i haven't pigeonholed you into the minimal bandwagon - it's important to play what you love, and I commend you for your track selection.

I will reserve any further judgement on RA's podcast genre diversity until they have had a chance to show us what else in their bag.

Cheers.

I'd say: Cassidy, who the feck are ya? Resident Advisor are providing free mixes for you from top-notch dj's (and Bill*). If ya don't like 'em, don't download them. Otherwise, have a little faith and sit back and wait and see how the series evolves. It's only a few weeks old ferchrissakes.

*j/k'ing bill. Loved your set @ Pawnshop.

Interesting thread. I have to say, although I am a big fan of this sort of thing, I would tend to agree that this feast of minimal is starting to cloy the palette a little.

I was looking forward to DJ Yoda a couple of weeks ago - what happened to that?

Still, Bill, I thought the mix was excellent. Joint first with Troy Pierce so far. Do you play in the UK much?

Generally, the idea of weekly mixes is excellent. It really cannot be faulted.

I don't think we met at all during conference mate - Paul mentioned to me at the  Resident Advisor  party that you were taking photos ... and I think I saw you floating around in the crowd - but we weren't actually introduced.

I've seen Bill live and thought he was wicked, this is just a crap mix.
