Burial - Truant cover
RA Review
Whenever a new Burial track emerges from the alleys of South London, it's a communal thing. As you listen for the first time, you can imagine thousands of others doing just the very same. Hyperdub's resident recluse Will Bevan's second release of 2012 felt no different. But listening through "Truant..

I'll admit I haven't had the chance to listen to this through a decent setup yet, but what I heard of it was pretty bland. 3.5 for me.

I've never been in the Burial church, but these two tracks are very very good. Rough Sleeper sounds like a gospel, indeed.

ep is insane. takes a couple of listens because there is just so much going on, but then it's 5/5 for life. some truely genius stuff, if you didnt care for it on first spin give it a couple more you'll fall in love.

very well written review btw, seems you loved it surprised no 5/5? or at least 4.5? anyway, to each his own, but my own is burial :)

i'll never get tired of this ep... his work on the vocals, the drums, the progression of the songs, how they seem to tell a story, how they materialize the melody in a feeling that pierces you literally... seriously, this guy is such a legend.

perfection reached the next level with mr bevan.

I wasn't keen on how it was stitched together, it sounds like 4 tracks on one record and the stop start was annoying. I'll give it another go but at the moment this is my least favourite Burial record.

Speaking as someone who has never been a huge fan, this is probably the first Burial release that I unreservedly love. Well *almost* unreservedly, because - as JoseMclean mentions above - the stop-start randomness gets tiring after a while. I'm sure someone somewhere is writing a review about how this perfectly illustrates "like, the disposable nature of music in the youtube era, man" because Burial brings out the worst in critics, but other than that I think this is perfect.

I'm the opposite of the below poster, this is the first Burial release that I could take or leave. Nothing about it really grabs me, just seems like a bunch of unfinished ideas.

YES to style: Burial.

Only Burial could have made such crafted works such as these lengthy tunes ... or maybe Ricardo Villalobos ... :-P

I *love* this EP. The tunes here emote like they did on UNTRUE (which this EP reminds me of). While I love everything Burial's done, this EP is my favorite when compared to STREET HALO and KINDRED.

If there isn't already, there should be a ratings pool.

Very nice review. And of course: Truant < Rough Sleeper

Yep, nice review, and it's great to see Burial doing something different. I'm not sure that doing the same thing forever would be sustainable, though, personally.

The first Burial release that I'm disappointed with.

Not a fan of the stop-start style which sounds like multiple different track snippets.

There is still some gorgeous ideas there but just when the track begins to get interesting it changes to something else completely.

Admittedly, I may need to give these tracks more time, because I've only listened to them a handful of times, and I really liked the way he executed this on Ashtray Wasp, but here it seems a bit much. They sound like completely different tracks every couple of minutes.

I hope he doesn't continue producing tracks in this vein.

@burka-burka i completely agree, i loved ashtray wasp, the way those seemingly unrelated parts of the track came together so cohesively but i feel like it doesn't work so well here. that said i may change my mind with more listens

Good review. It's admirable how much Will's pushed himself this year. This thing feels like the body count after Kindred's massacre.

Perfect for the Winter, nice slow tempo and chilled out vibes. G'man Will, you've done good

agree with Rough Sleeper feeling greater in general, but the two minutes from 6:30 to 8:30 in truant are so amazing anytime!!!

i'm not really a fan of the constant dropping in and out. one thing i loved about older burial material was how all of his tracks were like 'songs' but this just feels like a compilation of sketches thrown together.

the last minute and a half of truant and last three minutes of rough sleeper are all that matter

Whenever Burial releases something new, RA should just have 3 buttons that we can choose from to click and post how we feel about said release.

Button 1: Burial is God. Not a god, but THE God. Everything he touches is brilliant. Burial is absolute genius. He could breathe into a microphone for 10 minutes and release the result, and I'd buy the ultra-limited edition 720g vinyl with download code for beyond audiophile grade digital download.

Button 2: I'm way too cool to reveal that I'm on actually on the Burial bandwagon. I am underground! So I'll say that I'm not a fan, but I love this new release, even though I secretly want to press Button 1. Heaven forbid I lose any underground credibility. I mean, it sucked badly enough when my friends found out I like Hawthorne Heights and they stripped me of my emo cred.

Button 3: Meh.

There is a wow factor here with these, especially Rough Sleeper. The last two EPs i found really uninteresting, not bad, but i never put them on, unlike everything that came before...

Haha. If you'd actually read any of Burial's reviews on RA, you would see that your remarks don't make any sense here.

Just talking about Burial reviews in general, not only on RA because I've never once bought or abstained from buying something based on anyone's review, at least when it comes to music. It's so darn subjective that it makes me laugh a bit. What I wrote could apply to just about any artist...you've got the hardcore fans who would rate any record high if it's done by "their" artist and then the complete opposite attitude, that of the "doesn't matter what it is, if it's by so-and-so then it's overhyped and it sucks" variety. Oh, and I didn't really mean reviews, either. I'm talking about the comments that follow the reviews. Cheers.

This is the first time of my life I listen to Burial seriously :
Truant is just one of the best tracks evermade, in my humble personal opinion.
This is serious history we have here.

I like the comments saying it's paranoid music, dark, constantly droping and stoping.
Come on guys, this is not kindergarten here...

The sound design is pretty incredbile, this is pure marvel amazing work.
The arrangement is also very intersting : it's just telling you a story, it's like watching a movie, with your ears. None of the 2012 TOP 50 tracks voted here on RA got THAT amount of content...IMO

As a conclusion...what about this : IS Burial ... Four Tet ?

MEH !
