RA Feature
RA's Angus Finlayson tells the story of the South London party in a pool hall that is doing things just a little bit differently.

Exactly. With recognition comes publicity and with publicity comes the crowds.

Sounds like a great place. I got one question for people who have been there, do people dance around the pool tables or is there another room where they play the music? Curious to see what that would look like...

Nah there's another room before the tables, its not massive, then there's some double doors that lead to the pool tables.

Great what you have created here, life is about community and the person next to you! Great knowing you can pitch up and have a great time, knowing the usual friendly crowd will be there.

Name dropping aside, Mr. Zero and the other brother who can be seen sometimes working from behind the counter at S.O.T.U. have some good involvement in a lot of impactful events not aimed at making ££££s. The record shop connection may or may not get mention here and the Boiler Room involvement got loose mention without telling more about all the things he's involved in. For an observer whose been trying to piece together what's "going on" since my return to discover that most of the familiar faces left for Berlin...these guys have their ears to the ground are getting it done...Boiler Room, Phonica in-store sets, Rhythm Section...all good involvement. So Not the whole story and may'be all involvement won't connect the dots but they are on the map doing great stuff with the right agenda. Big up! and thanks Resident Advisor for the info.

sounds like a good spot.

But to the author of the post:
Is THAT neighborhood REALLY considered middle-class in England?
I knew the UK has been going down ever since all the colonies said bye-bye, but for real?

In US city, working class or less would have to be used by the look of things.
Have nothing against those hoods btw, this is just telling on a socio-economic viewing.

YES.

hey people. yes I'm that dude from the boiler room, but Rhythm Section has been going strong long before I became part of the BR team.

been mad busy, haven;t actually read the article yet - gonna wait for some peace and quiet to give it a good read! thanks angus for the writing.

as for the crowd - I have great faith in PEOPLE, nothing's gonna change and the vibe will stay strong. see you all feb 2nd!

different cultures, different times mate. Thats pretty much inner city, so the prices would be accessible to mostly middle-class citizens.

The pictures are of Rye Lane - 'It's a cramped, populous high street... where open-fronted Halal butchers, labyrinthine pound shops and the occasional fried chicken joint compete for space with the usual chain stores and supermarkets.'

The, 'Middle class residential enclaves' are not shown!

I'm sure Dummy did an article on this party a long time ago, that's what sent me down there, and it's far more "hipster" than ra. I liked the place, simple tings, nice party. If anything this may guarantee a crowd with zero sense of humour.

I think bussey and franks have the idiots locked down so it should be good in there for a while.

Only one thing I noticed is that it was quite young, not that there's anyhting wrong with that, just noticed it.

Would be interested in checking this out sometime. Nice feature.

Interesting subject, sounds like a well put together party. Shame the good news had to be prefaced with news of the authors' tiredness about life North of the river. Other stuff doesn't have to be bad just to make this thing good. Less journo's ego next time would be an improvement.

Proper party and just a few minutes from my flat.

Odd description of the areas round rye lane though. Did the journalist just visit Bellenden Rd?

i think that's what he meant by 'middle class enclave' in working class hood!

From the owner of Canavan's. I have a dance space separate to the pool tables but if the mood takes you you can dance around the pool tables NOT on them as I am also the home of the London county pool team.

Join us on face book.

It really makes me smile this sentence "Half of me wants to brag to everyone about how great Peckham is, and that they should come. But half of me wants them never to find out, and not to bother crossing the river, and to keep it our little secret". Don't you ever think that publishing this article on RA would definitively kill half of you?

I do like the idea behind it. In my imaginary world, the club scene should be made of several little clubs each one shaped, layer by layer, year after year by its devoted customers.
Nothing published or advertised officially but somehow communicated to "those" that know other soul-clubber people and so on. Criteria have to be met. A few really, basically one: loving electronic music. Thus, the "home" atmosphere.

I would like to ask a couple of questions to Brad : why, if your faith is really similar to mine, you decided to post an article about your club? Which is your aim? You want more people to join the Rhythm Section? Weren't they enough? Did you do it just to "evangelize" the concept, to offer to RA readers the possibility to see how good it is? Or maybe it could be said that the biggest adv. is to say in an article posted on one of the most famous electronic-music website that you don't like to advertise?

Maybe you can answer me that RA readers ARE the community of which your parties are made of. But this answer would be too obvious and simplistic.

All this because I would have preferred to had hear about Rythm Section from some mate's voice. Because there is no bigger threat to an initiative like this one than a massive flow of people invading old Canavan's.

See his point though. I mean, surely this article is a massive promo to bare people who usually wouldn't treck south of the river. You seem like a bright chap so you must be doing it for a reason. Not saying thats a bad thing, just saying.

FTR Much respect to the night.

Well, mine just wants to be a provocation. I am positively surprised to see that somebody is still thinking clubbing in a genuine (berlin, some) way and I was afraid about the potential indirect add you made by posting the article.

The question is always the same : secrecy is preferable and ethically correct when we talk about music or not? How to survive to the massification (thus profit-logic) in an hyper-connected era like ours?

100 people attending one week before the event doesn't mean anything actually. Normally people decide last moment.

I really, deeply, hope for you and your ideas to survive the mass-test (if ever there'll be one) cause next time I'll reserve a ticket for London I'll do it when Rhythm Section will take place.

All the best.
