In a lengthy diatribe on FACT, UK journalist Joe Muggs defends the current state dubstep, including its "dirty" side.

dubstep is only alive when burial or shackleton release something new. outside of them there are very few dubstep artists i care to listen to. most of the time when i hear dubstep i find that i cannot hear anything. all i hear is a deafening flatulent silence.

Typical Fact hipsterism/contrarianism. They just have to be ahead of the curve. Once everyone liked dubstep, Fact says it's dead. Now that everyone says dubstep is dead, Fact says it's actually not. It must be tiring having to be so damn cool all the time.

Agreed, especially since he then goes on and disses trance and electro house which voids his whole fucking point he was trying to make. Also the whole thing just reeks of trying too hard.

What a terrible attempt at writing an article. Mess It comes out as a veiled attempt at justifying his terrible taste in dubstep music and I am assuming, as an extension, his terrible taste in electronic music. By attaching the Fabric name to the Caspa mix, he's trying to pass filth as legitimate. References to metal are highly obnoxious too. Taking Korn's name in the same breath as classic metal albums is just so desperate (for those more interested, please go listen to the lyrics from the album he is referring to and you'll go kill yourself for sure). Filth doesn't even have a history worth talking about. And then comparing filth to grime is just shallow. Even Aphex Twin's Rephlex Records gave an early thumbs up to the "dubstep" sound through the "Grime" compilations. Looks like Joe Muggs never listened to much grime. Agreed that grime goes hard. But, it has an orchestrated impact. Filth dubstep aka brostep however sounds like a guy shabbily inducing fits through random high frequency jabs which for some reason a lot of people enjoy. I guess for people it's all about the drop and moshing - art, music and groove are not their primary concerns. Also, I hate people who justify this music by calling it "fun" music. What the fuck is that supposed to mean? As if people listening to "real" music are not trying to have fun. Rusko, that Joe is so enthusiastically referencing, himself ridiculed the brostep sound later on. Listen to his last album on Mad Decent, where he somewhat attempted to get back to his deeper sounding roots.

I went to see J:Kenzo a few months ago, the no-name dnb dj in the next room was 10x more entertaining.

Classic FACT, although I would think they'd have published something like this atleast a couple of years ago.

I believe that's just Joe Muggs being himself.

to each their own i suppose. not a fan of it; never have been. Better to just leave dubstep to the peeps that want it. And keep it out of RA (man, i do sound like an old man)...

The article isn't about dubstep. It's some guy defending brostep to get people riled up and generate ad revenue. Pathetic that RA would link to that garbage.

I thought it was an interesting article, albeit one that goes maybe a little too far in some aspects (like where he disses other genres). I think, though, that the only part of the article that should really be heeded is this:
"You can never avoid rubbish music entirely, this is the nature of the beast, and we all get pissed off sometimes but jesus, some people seem to literally dedicate more energy and words to complaining (and by extension passive-aggressively boasting about how good their taste is) than to actually supporting the music they like. So kids getting ripped to the gills on cheap drugs and throwing themselves about to noisy music upsets you? Good. Stay upset."
While the most commercial djs produce stuff that all sort of riffs on the same idea, I have found a few, that would be called "brostep," djs who have been able to take the heaviness of dubstep and brostep and weave a really interesting tapestry with breakbeats, dn'b, hip hop and metal and more. I think that the pursuit of the sound has lead to some interesting ideas in terms of production and sound design (tipper, or bassnectar for example). In fact, I really enjoy how something that sounds like Merzbow with a beat can be so commercially successful. I look forward to more innovation in merging full-on noise with groovy dance beats in the future, and, of course, further explorations into the realms of bass.

Anyone who writes "The Aphex Twin" is not to be taken seriously.
