Available for download starting today, the app brings the popular DJ software to touchscreen.

I love both digital and vinyl DJing and quite enjoy seeing people get wound up about it, but 'the app will even suggest your next track using an algorithm that takes into account tempo and harmonic structure' might be a step too far even for me!

CLASSIC APP
*****
LEGEND!!!

Great. Id like to see Richie play a 6h set on an iPad and be able to stand straight after.
DJing is an art and not a fucking AppStore game.

As much as I sympathise with Traktor Scratch and the likes, this is enough.

Is there anyway to use this app as a native midi effects controller to accompany a timecode set up?

DJWanger - not as far as I know, you might be better off with something like: http://ipad-dj.noelc.com/ipad-dj/touchOSC-templates-for-Traktor.html

Yes! It is better than I thought even has a record option, nice one :-). Although removing the headphone cueing will really piss of some dj's. anyway it's a fun app and i think i'm going to try it. To bad NI apps don't support bluetooth audio streaming.

you have headphone cueing in the app, but you need to split the output signal...

So this only supports multi-outputs by using the Traktor Audio 6/10? A shame, I've got an NI Audio 2 DJ soundcard I rarely use, and would be perfect for this.

tdmusic - I have seen that before but thanks anyway. Just thought NI would attempt to create something that's catered more towards the professional DJ!

Yep, agree that'd be good DJWagner. I'm using Lemur for that which is definitely a pro application, but isn't as tightly integrated as something NI could create. Maybe that'll be their next app? :)

awesome.

of course not meant to repleace a real dj set up - but how cool to record mixes when i'm riding on the train or on a road trip, or...just sitting up in bed unable to sleep.

can't wait to use it.

now only if they would release a version of Maschine that somewhat approximates the real thing.

i'd be willing to shell out 50 bucks for something like that.

Fuck, that is a really helpful and informative video!

So you couldn't already do this with a laptop?

to answer your question, i can do lots of things on a laptop. does that not mean there are also things I should be able to do on an Ipad?

if not, why would I have purchased an ipad in the first place?

I can imagine that this is nice for the busy travelling DJ; an iPad is easier to manipulate on a cramped airplane than a laptop. I'd never get this for gigging, but for prepping tracks & playlists on the move it doesn't sound half bad.

Native Instruments - Traktor DJ for iPad cover
RA Review
If you've followed our coverage of the NAMM Show these past couple of years, you may have noticed the absence of Native Instruments, one of the more notable names in the business. Rather than setting up a booth amid the sea of noise in Anaheim, they've released product teasers strategically timed..

People may say the art of DJing is evolving with technology, but how long is it before a computer algorithm can pick and mix tracks perfectly? Ugh

i have no problem with technology in the dj world, i can stomach synch if creativity can be explored but suggesting a track for me?? NO!!

The next step is that dj's aren't needed anymore but software will be the next celebrity. I think this world has too many bad dj's because of this technology. Real dj's don't sync, know their tracks and play what the audience wants ... all in a way it's unique to the dj itself and the audience can discover new things... That's not the case these days ... why? Look around you ... there are no real new dj's anymore with real talents.

I guess the next-step will be using a simple cd/dvd player in gigs, insert a pre-recorded set CD using this type of scarry/crappy new tech without the need of knowing how to mix with a good old mk2, and see a guy pretending to be mixing live spending an hour his arms in the air Guetta style, without even knowing when he lost his crowd .....

But I guess im wrong and soon treated as anti-tech ...

damn

Doubt it. There will always be a pendulum swing. First you'll see more "DJ's" like Guetta who think they can be something by simply having an iPad but it won't last long. I'll always fight for technology yet the human element cannot be computed into an algorithm tapped on a touch screen. Can this be used in addition to? Yes. Will it replace? No, only for the shitty or the commercial bar/club playing top 40's mixes. Am I worried? Not at all. It's another gun for the army not a replacement therapy.

sorry chaps, you knew this wos comin. first the machine did the beatmatching and lo, did peeps say: 'now i can concentrate on the important stuff like choosin me tunes and throwin effects onnit. an smocka di weed'
then they came up with fx macros so that everybodys fx chains could finally sound exactly the same. and lo did peeps say: 'now oi can concentrate on the important stuff like choosin me tunes an smocka di weed'
then the machine started choosin the tunes and beatmatchin em while a dippin bird pecks at your ipad to throw sick arse fx.
next i reckon theyll outlaw weed

A comment I read from the developer of Nanostudio iOS may shed light on this. He said that Android has inherent driver/OS/hardware issues that all conspire to make the environment a poor one for music. Latency and all sorts of issues.

Also the market eco-system is much more lucrative for developers.

I love the way that beatmatching and syncing creates the bizarro step of assuming that DJs will suddenly fade from view.

Those are useful tools, yes, but you still cannot replace the soul that a flesh and blood quality DJ puts into their set. Set programming, learning the history of music, crafting an identity with tune selection and archive... none of that can be replaced by machinery. For those with that knowledge and deft touch, it can enhance it.

If you get hung up on the quality of a DJ being identified by being a large pink metronome, then your life will start to become rather frustrating and sad.

A shit DJ, picking shit tunes, structuring his mixes shitly will just go from one who beatmatches badly, to one who is perfectly synced but still shit.

Next @ Klubnacht
4.5/5? Really? I'd love to see what headroom you have left for reviewing actual pieces of amazing gear...like say, an analog synth or drum machine, something actually useful for creating music.

Fucking lol

Just downloaded this app... For the price it was worth having a shot even if I'm all vinyl otherwise. Turns out that you can't really import your own stuff without having the actual Traktor-software installed on your actual computer. This is just a side-kick that can play stuff from iTunes... Which means I have no use for this as I don't do Traktor or Serato or any other digital dj'ing anyway. Would've just wanted to import some of my loops and have a try. However, you can't do that with Traktor DJ.

I take all these negative reactions about Traktor for iPad as manifestations of fear for innovation.

It would have been be very interesting to see the reactions of some music "purists" when:

- Some dude back in the early 2000 started DJing with a laptop instead of spinning vinyl.
- Some dude back in the early 80s started to scratch vinyl instead of playing an "actual" drum machine or synth.
- Some dude back in the mid 70s started to play a drum machine instead of playing a real drum set.
- some dude back in the 60s started to play a symphony with a Moog instead of a piano and orchestra.
- some dude back in the mid 50s started to overload and distort an electric guitar and thought it was a cool sound while the engineers were laughing at him.
- some dude back in the late 20s put actual voltage into a piano making it "electric".
- some dude back in at the end of the 1600s invented the piano and all the stuck up Aristocrats in Europe were ridiculing the sound stating had no future.

And finally, some dude back in the mid 2010s making some blissful sounds touching a tablet driven by some cheap laughable app from the apple store.

Wake up. This is the future. Fear for innovation, especially in music, is the number one enemy of creativity.

It's a nice little toy to play with. It's a lot better than to play first person shooters or to waste your time with Super Mario.

Downloading now. One of the things I love doing when travelling for work is sequencing some tracks and lining up cue points so that when I have some down time at home I can just have fun with playing tracks without the setup. Hopefully this will be a nice fit for that purpose.

I think that one aspect that we forget to touch on is the social economic point. Lets face it, what percentage of us can pull out 1000 to 10,000k and get cdj's/1200 a mixer, amp, speakers etc etc... I no that when I realized I wanted to DJ getting gear was a huge financial battle. Let's say there is a kid in a poor neighborhood with great natural talent but no money to get gear. Something like this could really get him going sooner, as opposed to trying to save up a bunch of money.
Yes, of course picking the next track for you is totally ridicules, but NI wants to sell units and people with no skill that want to be cool and be in the spot light and try to DJ, this could be a big selling point for them. We all know those are the types that don't last anyway. I don't have traktor but I will dl this and use it.

Love and Success
J.

this isn't true at all.
this app works totally independently to Traktor on your computer - you just import your tracks via iTunes.

I love mixing, been doing it for 18 years, now with a baby on the scene it's so nice to just pick up my ipad and have a quick mix in the odd few minutes that I have spare. No need to boot up my heavy laptop, or get on some decks. Just play some tunes that I want. Tune selection and timing make a good mix and that comes from the person. So as for me, this is great, just what I needed.
