Joanna Fuertes-Knight argues that the days of intimate and loyally-attended series like FWD>> are over because "connoisseurs can now gurn in their own homes."

Next @ Houseology
Nope.

Speak for yourself.

"Expectations are much higher, and when you're forking out 15 wongas on the Fri/Sat slots obviously some of the DJs are feeling more obliged to play the 'heavy hitters' for the kids! Ultimately Joanna is right, and at the end of the day who cares where we get our music, as long as were pranging out all the same!"

Mint.

"So where are the modern-day equivalents of these incubators of the future? Nowhere to be seen. Small, loyally attended events look thin on the ground..."

I wouldn't be listening to any underground clubbing assessments from a person who seems to write 90% about pop music: http://www.vice.com/en_uk/author/joanna-fuertesknight

I'll never forget those days when we connoisseurs weren't permitted to gurn at home... dark times

"a blend of the best in new bass and hip-hop had kids queuing round the block so they had a chance of being in the background of snaps of Seb Chew casually LOL-ing next to Mark Ronson"

....[to]....

"These were nights strictly for the music heads."

Somebody please get this person away from the internets.

I always cringe a bit when the guardian try to weigh in on dance music, they miss the mark every time.

Incorrect.

The author is clearly not even slightly in the know.

Accurate title: "small night clubs just aren't where people (who clearly don't know shit) go to hear music these days"

It appears she also writes for VICE. Now there's a surprise [/sarcasm].

I'm going to go way out on a limb here and say that I completely agreed with everything the author wrote. Some brilliant insights.

NPR > Guardian

Funny, I was just cringing at the thought of what NPR might've done (might still do?) with the same prompt.

People writing about consuming music in a space that it doesn't belong. Ground breaking shiz innit??? I think I need to start listening to my hardcore hip-hop records with street gangs in their drug dens, now that it has been pointed out. First Passioweiss and now Guardian. These jobless people need to go outdoors and enjoy the feeling instead of sitting at home and posting their photos with their cat on instagram. Internet has certainly made it easier to discover music but the amount of shit that floats around, it's not even funny. Good DJs sift through all the bs - no wonder every fucker is asking for a track ID when their balls are busted. Or maybe these writers are bandwagon jumpers and just get hyped by every new track by a "breaking through" artist.

In Cape Town, SA... Fiction is a smallish nightclub.. and it's still one of the most popular for people here to listen to da new beatzzzzzz

bullshit.

I waded in big style on this argument. Vice and The Grauniad need to fucking pipe down a bit, think a bit and then step off a bit before even THINKING to think about saying shit like that about dance music. Who the fuck is they to be saying nightclubs are shit?

Guardian - stick to writing about politititititians and football. Leave the club, dance and DJ talk to US in the RA forums. We write better and our opinions ACTUALLY mean something.

Who's with me?

An interesting riposte to this article from a Bristol viewpoint: http://bedmodisco.com/2013/03/01/sell-by-daves-rant-small-parties-are-where-its-at/

Lazy, faux provocative journalism, written by a Vice no mark. Get your head out of your hipster arse, (LOL'ing??) and back on a dance-floor. There are 100's of decent small nights in London; and here's a clue - some of them are even advertised in the weekly club section in the fucking Guardian. Jaysus.

I know. It's making ME fucking sick too. It's like I know my stuff is funny but not enough people are reading. I'm about THIS close to tipping point before my blog gets bigger than it is and I'm pushing it. Shamelessly and embarrassingly. I'm sorry. Seriously, I'm not even joking now. I am fucking DESPERATE for this blog to take off properly because I hate my job and I have very low self esteem in real life. WRDM is my only positive outlet, the only area where I feel confident and in control.

I promise you that I'm going to calm down now with the spam stuff, bothering people who want to read these forums for dance fans with honest, considered and serious opinions. I've been a fucking joke recently. I'm serious. This is it. I'm changing. I hope I've kept you as a reader and I hope I've not bitten too much into your time.

Please keep reading, doll.

With very best wishes,

I much prefer to go hear music in a small intimate venue.... Most Dj's prefer playing them too...

This Joanna hasn't got a clue. I feel embarrassed for The Guardian in publishing this rubbish.

There are plenty of small club nights across the country that are thriving. Louche, Basics, System in Leeds. Machine, Basing House, Warm in London. I can't be bothered to list them all to be honest.

Just because this Joanna doesn't go to them and instead poncey glam house nights or large events she is in no place to comment on the rest of the scene.

The small club scene is very healthy and will always be healthy. I much prefer getting lost in a small club, on a right sound system with a group of great mates that you don't lose.

Long live small club nights and bugger off Joanna.

Ben x
