Resident Advisor Posts / 8521 RA Since / Aug 2001 | #0 / Fri, 29 Dec 06 17:01 Is it the end of the year already? Time for one of those pesky music polls. The RA team has put on our thinking caps, rifled through our records and agonised over our choices to present the first ever RA music poll. Writers and contributors to RA have been arguing about bass drum tones, stage presence and mixing styles for weeks, and this week it's time to announce the results. Roll out the red carpet.
The RA trophies will go to winners across nine categories: top albums, top remixes, top compilations, top labels, top DJs, top producers, top live acts and of course top five RA podcasts. Votes came in from contributors as far afield as Japan, Singapore, Bulgaria, Spain and Israel. The wonders of the Internet will never cease to amaze!
But no surprise, really, because these days the dance music community is a global one. Whether you are out partying each weekend in the club capitals or dancing around the living room at home in the sticks, in 2006 it seems like we've all got access to good music in one way or another, and in that sense we're connected (give or take a trance hotbed or two in India). But while the Internet might be opening up ears to this fantastic music all the time, it brings with it a new responsibility: to choose to give back to the artists. Let's honour them with trophies, but also with cash.
Judging by the quality of the releases this year, 2006 has been great for dance music. The purpose of this poll is to celebrate the best electronic rhythms out there, but we also hope that it might turn you the reader on to something you might not haven’t discovered otherwise. At very least, it might give you a good idea for that difficult late Christmas present.

Posts / 109 RA Since / Oct 2006 Location / London | #4 / Sun, 31 Dec 06 12:12 I totally agree with you up there.. M.A.N.D.Y. are not the best djs at all, pretty shit to be honest... (they must have paid for all the 1'sts.. The rest of the list looks good, though there were one dj missing.. As a london resident, I'v been out clubbing quite a bit, and I've been to Fabric alot..! The 18'th of February, Fabric hosted Mathew Jonson and Steve Bug in room 1... I'm open for all music, but the set Steve played there was beyond everything I've ever heard.. The best DJ'ing ever.. So dark and so hypnotising, and it was the first time I heard Smackman!! Seriously RA, you forgot someone big there!

Agree on MANDY - dont rate them at all. Hawtin's number one for me after saturday night.

Posts / 253 RA Since / Dec 2005 Location / Chicago | #8 / Tue, 02 Jan 07 20:48 I don't understand the lack of respect this site gives to James Holden. His border showcase in Mexico was nothing short of espectacular. Besides, he's one of the few djs who have dared to visit places almost every dj turns down. He deserves a place in this list. This and a terrible review for "the idiots are winning", simply shows the lack of understanding for abstract electronic music. I agree with Mayer and all the rest, except for Luciano. What about Matthew Dear? His sets are amazing and energetic. The same applies to the latter presentations from Sven Vath (Cocoon, Ibiza) and Adam Beyer. I still respect the opinion of the editors, but it seems innacurate at times. I think you need better journalists IMO.

Im shocked over the fact that the mandy mix came first, and all the other fuzz about them this year.. Though, it must be said that they have done alot of good stuff earlier.. I've seen Holden at fabric before, and he is one of those dj's who really makes something special out of his set.. Remember most people like U2, Christina Aguilera ect. so all in all, we're quite well of here..

ElectroFunkDaddySuperstar Posts / 964 RA Since / Jul 2006 Location / Londoninium | #31 / Tue, 09 Jan 07 04:53 i disagree. the man can definately mix and sure as hell knows how to hold a crowd. thats what matters, right? sure, maybe he doesnt sell out massive gigs across the globe and definately hasnt been on the scene as long as the likes of people like digweed or howells but that does that mean hes not a contender? i dont think so. maybe check him out next time he plays and take a look around the crowd on the night - i think that is a better judge of talent. as for "top of the world game"... i have seen elite force and meat katie more times than i can remember and to be honest, i cant think of many dj's that play out, regardless of the crowd size, location, background or venue, with the same amount of relentless enthusiasm and lack of fuck ups. add to that the fact that they always have the time of the day for a chat to reveal the name of a tune or just to talk shit to messed up clubbers after the set (namely thyself) and i reckon thats what constitutes a top 10 dj. but hey, thats just my opinion...

New user Posts / 6 RA Since / Jun 2006 Location / Los Angeles | #33 / Thu, 11 Jan 07 18:01 I echo the opinion that these lists are a bit too tech/minimal biased. Also, there's a noticeable lack of women DJs and producers within these lists. I'm not one for tokenism, but a bit of parity would be nice, especially because there are plenty of female DJs/producers, such as Ellen Allien, that meet all of the selection criteria. Her tirelessness is commendable, as is her work.

I think this thread is about the top 10 dj's of the year not producers. Like you say as a producer she is very good but her Djing is nothing more than average certainly not worthy of a top ten spot imo.
