Bpitch Control boss Ellen Allien weighs in with the latest comp in the Fabric series. ‘Fabric 34’ will hit shelves mid-May.

Allien’s ‘Fabric’ mix might make up for the loss of her DVD sets – Resist Records have cancelled the whole ‘The Other Side of…” series (and replaced it with a new series, Vol. 1 of which is 'The World's Greatest Trance'). Allien fans who can’t wait until May might want to check out her ‘Camping Vol. 3’ label comp, although watch out – that one is unmixed.

“I wanted to do an analog mix, by hand. I used my favorite records of last year and the newest ones. I like analog!" says Ellen. "And I like to hear how one has to manipulate the mix until it’s tight. I like the mix because to me it’s the ideal club mix that I personally would like to hear in a club. It’s also a nice memory for me – I can remember every record being played by myself in a club. And when I now listen to the mix I can recall all the great moments.”

The tracklist reveals a lot of recent Berlin DJ favourites, including Larry Heard’s ‘The Sun Can’t Compare’, Don Williams’ ‘Orderly Kaos’ and, somewhat surprisingly, a cut from Thom Yorke, who is also included on Dixon’s ‘Body Language Vol. 4’ and Modeselektor’s ‘Boogy Bytes Vol. 3. Allien’s mix also features cuts from Estroe, Cobblestone Jazz and Roman Flugel – overall this one looks in line with Allien’s signature blend of melodic techno with electro and pop influences.

Still on a Fabric tip, RA sources can reveal that our top podcaster of 2006 Ewan Pearson has signed on to mix ‘Fabric 35’.

‘Fabric 34’ tracklist

1. Schubert - S1
2. Larry Heard Presents Mr. White - The Sun Can’t Compare
3. Estroe - Driven
4. Damian Schwartz - Tu Y Yo (Peros Nos Volvemos A Levantar) (Pilas Remix)
5. Don Williams - Orderly Kaos
6. Melody Boy 2000 - Sound Stealer
7. Artificial Latvamaki - It Is Now Either
8. Cobblestone Jazz - India In Me 2
9. Roman Flugel - Mutter
10. Aste/Maan - Aaltovaihe
11. Thom Yorke - Harrowdown Hill
12. Ellen Allien - Just A Woman
13. Ben Klock - Journey
14. Heatthrob - Baby Kate (Plastikman Remix)
15. Apparat - Arcadia

‘Fabric 34’ mixed by Ellen Allien will be released on Fabric Records from May 18th.

RA Review
Bpitch Control boss Ellen Allien has always managed to give techno a melodic, joyful and innocent feel. Be it fragmented and delicate vocals on her album ‘Berlinette’, or the fusion of rough beats and Apparat's strings on last year's awesome ‘Orchestra of Bubbles’, she has a gift for making music th..

I still cannot believe I missed her at WMC. Still kicking myself in the ass for that.

Didn't really like this release - thought the flow was a little bit all over the place

Best Fabric mix in a long, long time for me...since Matthew Dear's 27, at least. Just like you said, a warm and soulful mix - in part due to all the vinyl scratches and pops. Deserved higher than your 3 1/2, in my opinion. That Artificial Latvamaki track is one of the best techno songs I've ever heard. BTW I heard her set at Spacelab Yellow in Tokyo last week had four (!) power outages, and that she stormed off the stage at 2am. Too bad...

Yeah, really looking forward to that Ewan Pearson mix when it comes through as well...I haven't heard much by him but he seems to have a reputation as supreme tastemaker of dance. Regarding Carola's mix, I've tried again and again to get into it but it always leaves me feeling cold. Really well-mixed but a bit too quirky.

I wouldn't worry about it too much everytime I've seen her live or otherwise has been disapointing.

Yeah that Carola mix is a minimal monster! Still, this mix has its moments...I really like the Melody Boy track...I feel like someone could sample its core melody, take out the vocals, add a more powerful beat and create a completely destructive remix...wish I had the talent/software/equipment :(

i think this is an incredible mix, i especially like the part when 'just a woman' starts creeping in from behind Thom Yorke's Harrowdown Hill, excellent music from frau Ellen!

Marco Carrola´s fabric 31 is one of the most boring mixes of the whole series for me ... but of course it depends on personal taste ;) I promise to listen to Marco once again ... when I´ll have time :) Robert

This mix has been one of the highs for me this year. Although it got lost somewhere in the middle it quickly recovered the pace and I truly liked the way how she played the Harrowdown Hill, great flow overall. I'd rate it higher than 3.5 that's for sure. 4.5 in my book.

It matters if you try...

I actually think that "lost" aspect is a highlight...the 'It Is Now Either'/'India in Me'/'Mutter' section is so incestuous and confusing and weird, but then Aaltovaihe's 'O' totally strips it down and then BAM! Harrowdown Hill! The impact of that track wouldn't be felt without those few tracks that preceded it. Not a big fan of the Apparat track at the end but I'm with you on the 4.5...one of fabric's best

she's so constantly doing a good job as dj over the years one has to appreciate her, for her producer quality as well. what makes me even more disappointed by this mix i count to the weakest mixes of the fabric edition at all. missing a structure, a relevant development of musical themes or elements or at least a main principle. just getting a bulk of partly excellent, partly not so excellent single tracks. how could this happen?!

Didn't really enjoy this one too much, there was no progression or flow for me and her mix into India in me completely lost the essence of what that track is all about imo. It's a bit too ragged and clumsy.

The tracks are great and the mixing is solid but like said before the flow is all over the place. Still some of the individual tracks are the best I've heard this year.

And the Ewan Pearson mix is one of the best in the series.

i'm glad she went down the analogue route for this one. people complain about the lack of flow, but pearson, bug, and villalobos all mixed their sets digitally, which makes it much easier to get that flow going. and to be honest, i'm glad she focused more on track selection than flow. it's better than a bunch of faceless minimal tracks where you can't tell when one tune ends and the next one starts.
