| #1 / Mon, 20 Aug 07 01:47 Vinyl of course, but due to much stuff not being available on vinyl, CD's are a welcome addition. Tho if I would have enough money I'd for sure prefer to get stuff printed to vinyl, just cos of the feel and look. (a vinyl dj just looks better than some1 playing CD's in my opinion)
serato / final scratch is then a better option.

| #10 / Sat, 06 Oct 07 15:00 it seems cd's became a popular dj tool at a very specific time, sort of before anyone knew what the hell to do with mp3s. now that mp3 is so popular, i don't see why cd hasn't gone the way of the buffalo - as a dj tool - but more power to those who enjoy it. for me it's just too clunky, i'll take a laptop+vinyls setup any day.

| |
 |
| #11 / Mon, 08 Oct 07 12:32 when i used to spin it was vinyl only. but the ability to find new music on mp3 and cd is so much easier and cost effective. and the sound quality is about the same, so i say cd for pure ease of use.

| #12 / Sat, 01 Mar 08 04:15 This is a old topic!! Anyway I have always used vinyl. But with the luxury of a 3 or 5 channel mixer I began using a CD deck. It was a low range Pioneer, I sold it. I really dont like the digital sound. There is a warmth from vinyl and a feel that you just dont get with any other media. I will stick with my 1210's forever. I have to go to the gym to lug all those records around, but its worth it when you drop that last track of your set. The crowd is jumping.I go with vinyl

| #14 / Wed, 05 Mar 08 20:25 Vinyl has a great sound, we know that.CD has a great sound ,we know that too. But surely its about the music.I don't care which format it is,a good tune is a good tune. Why restrict your creative choice and capabilities when playing out because a format might sound better or different to another. If its a new tune that I haven't Herd before, I don't Care if its played to me on tape.
Vinyl vs. CD = don't matter!!!

| #16 / Wed, 05 Mar 08 21:16 One major reason I prefer wax to cds or worseyet mp3s is that it acts as a natural filter against rubbish. We are bombarded by information these days, including music, nobody has time to sift through ALL those mp3s to find the gems. At least w/ vinyl, you know that someone had to like their music enough to go to the trouble of pressing it up. Aside from that, I just like having my music on a big, fat, tangeable format that most (non-dj) people dont even consider buying anymore.

| #19 / Sat, 22 Mar 08 00:21 I don't like "playing" cds. Never have liked mixing them one bit. I do really like serato - I think the feel is great and a well produced peice of music is a well produced peice of music - I do prefer the warmth and bass tone of vinyl though. I like mp3s but I also like the fact that beatport burns .wav.
But.... when all is said and done I will always buy vinyl if it's released on vinyl and if I think the track(s) are tops. I just buy far less vinyl than I did before.

| #20 / Wed, 23 Apr 08 02:56 playing from cds makes life so much easier when you are a proper dj playing in clubs... carrying all your vinyls or struggling to find the right tune may cause lots of trouble... but i am a traditionalist and i still would say that vinyl rocks and to be honest i hate watching quality djs not using them. i am diy dj and i do it only for fun tho i tried cds and it didnt make me as happy as when im pushing my black pancakeks

Maybe it's just me, but I actually listen to stuff. That's how I sift the good from the bad. Are you saying there are no bad records out there on vinyl? Will you just accept that 'someone' thought it was good enough to press it to vinyl so it must be good enough to play? I can tell within a few beats if a track is worthless, easy, done, onto the next. I love / loved vinyl but it doesn't work for me anymore. Too many better options out there.

| #26 / Sat, 03 May 08 11:33 I believe people can like CDs or vinyls for different reasons, for me it's all about the vinyl, I prefer the warmer sounds, deeper bass, you can "feel" the music physically better than with digital, and that's why it's better for dance music especially. but it's also more involving to DJ with and collect and that adds a whole intangible romantic element that's harder to explain but is nevertheless there for me but if some people prefer CDs because they have a crisper sound or they're more convenient or they prefer the CD dj interface, then that's fine as long as it's a considered opinion. however, convenience is not an artistic decision and adds nothing to the creative process, it's the wrong reason for me
one argument that I can't get with is that "it doesn't matter", it does matter, there is a difference, the sound is different, the interface is different, and therefore affects how the music is presented.
the irony about CDs though is that they've ushered in the digital age that is killing the music industry majors, yet it was the majors who pushed the CD as a corporate move (not an advancement in hi-fidelity)

| #27 / Sat, 03 May 08 11:37 and it should be noted that even hardcore vinyl champions like Theo Parrish plays the odd CD or digital file, as that's the only format he can get a track on, so they do have their place, even for a vinyl purist

| #29 / Sat, 03 May 08 15:44 definetly vinyl cause that sounds better. and dj's they spin vinyl are sexier than dj's the search in their cd-wallet ... (that's not funky man! ) and about serato and all the things i want say: i like to feel the music in my hands ... to get a package from the postman...or get to hardwax for check new releases...talk with people...and so on that's for me the essence living as a dj...feel the vibe...since i was 15... and please tell me...wtf is WAV!? ) but at the end i respect cd's ... for testing a new track on a party... but i buy 98% vinyl cause i don't want that this culture die.

| #32 / Sun, 18 May 08 22:49 Im a vinyl lover through and through but you need to be aquiped with both vinyl and cd's these days just for the fact that turntables are in such bad condition these days(which i feel is really unfare to the vinyl dj)

Yep, i agree with that. Started off on cds, as the first time i played i didnt even know how to mix, but then quickly moved to vinyl and loved it. Which really helped me to teach myself how to mix. But i've found turntables are in such bad condition in clubs, every time i played out there was always a problem, even in top clubs like ministry. Thats what convinced me to move to cdj. Also, i find with cdjs you have more time/freedom to be creative, rather than carefully pushing/slowing down a vinyl to beatmatch it.

| #38 / Mon, 02 Jun 08 12:27 Here is my opinion on the whole thing. I feel that there are too many "sound profis" out there that just jumped on the "coolness band wagon" by saying, "OOH! Vinyl sounds so much better than cds." I say this is true but only when you have an absolute top system in the club or you are listening to the tracks at home through your headphones. So many clubs these days try to save money on the PA's in the clubs or they don't have a good sound tech that has the PA set right. In most clubs then, you won't hear the difference bewtween vinyl or cds. I wish we could have a competition to see how many "vinyl junkies" could even hear the difference between cds and vinyl. I bet the results would be very surprising. Myself, I like the feel and look of vinyl better. But lets be honest, who the hell wants to lug the weight all over the place? I am also a proud owner of Serato, but with the diminishing number of djs using vinyl, many clubs are neglecting the turntables and they are not in good condition which leads to MASSIVE problems. In worse yet conditions, some clubs don't even have turntables. So in many cases, you are forced to play cds. End statement, vinyl has a certain coolness factor and may sound better in optimal conditions, but lets get over it and focus on what we get payed to do, put on a show by playing music so the people will dance into the morning hours!

I don't know how much easier it is, same work is done as with vinyl. Might be true that there are more "average" djs that work with cds. But a true performer will take the "average" cd set to the next level doing things with loops and stuff of that nature. Think about it.

Another thing is that not all vinyl sounds good. Sometimes the pressings make the music sound bad. When I can buy and mp3 from some digital store, and it sounds better than a plate I just got, it has to make me wonder if it is worth the investment.

Why the fuck would you invest that much money into something just so it looks like you're playing vinyl? Either use vinyl or don't. What's the point of a setup that replicates vinyl? You're still mixing mp3s.
