 | RA Review Why Can’t We Be Like Us is like the unexpected fulfilment of a promise: unexpected because none of Pronsato’s EPs so far had hinted at anything this good; and a fulfilment in the sense that he has spared nothing with this work—there is nothing missing, lacking, insufficient. Not since We Are Mo..

| #12 / Mon, 07 Jan 08 21:06 (Edited: 7 Jan 08 21:15) this is the best album i have purchased in a long time, many won't agree but this beats burial in my books. Sound design at its finest. The way the classic sounds melt with the "found sound" is simply unreal. Its one of those listening albums were you come home after a hard day at work and just close your eyes and get taken away be all the details and subtleties layed out across a fore front of very sexy percussion and more classic, sometimes even jazzy moods. Emo on cd and i love it so much i cut myself.
edit: article says 21st, but it is available for purchase since december in Canada. odd.

| #15 / Mon, 07 Jan 08 23:26 i am quite confused about pronsato. without having heard much by him, i saw him at panoramabar last month, and he completely blew my mind. some of the weirdest shit i've ever heard, and really groovy. my gf and i couldn't wait to hear some of the tracks from that night on this album. but after listening to the album a few times, i have concluded that, although it is great, i recognize nothing from that night at panorama. furthermore, he sounds like a completely different artist on this album than he does live... at panoramabar he was doing extremely cryptic remixes of prince and this country song my gf recognized called 'peggy sue,' and using 'techno-vocals' renditions of lyrics from 'safety dance' and 'one two step.' great album, in any case.
anyone else seen him recently?

| #16 / Mon, 07 Jan 08 23:49 this album wasn't intended as a dancefloor dj set or a compilation. There are tons of generic 4 to the floor make your ass shake and chew your face off offerings on the market. Bruno is more than just a dj (an actual musician as well), and this album in my eyes was an atempt at bringing something out more from the heart and something that isn't samish as everything else. Yes dance music is a big part of electronica, but electronica is not only for dancing He didnt play just his own stuff at panoramabar. Does an artist paint the same picture over and over again just because it works? (sadly though people like erick prydz and deadmau5 subscribe to this theory to a huge audience of hype consuming plebes). This isn't an album marketed to reach the mass, this is a work of art to be appreciated by fans of sound design and minimalism.

| #17 / Tue, 08 Jan 08 01:05 I think Bill Lee was talking about seeing him play live, not DJ. The live sets I've heard by him have been more groove focussed, but certainly no less of a work of art. You seem to be suggesting that anything made for home listening is better than things made for dancing, which is blatantly not true.

i don't suggest that one is better than the other but that they are both 2 different things completely. I'm really big on this album yet I do not want to hear this kind of stuff when i go out. Bill seemed upset that he did not hear the same tracks in the club as on this cd and i was only pointing out the differences between an artist album and a club set. I've seen Pronsato live many times, i know he is capable of rocking that dancefloor, now we know he is capable of rising beyond that. Completely different arists in terms of style but think Trentemoller. He can make music that makes people sweat and turn around and make something that is porno for audiophiles. I think this is a sign of a great producer.

| #21 / Tue, 08 Jan 08 04:07 don't misunderstand me- i'm not complaining at all! i think the album is amazing, and as a fan of electronic music, i understand and appreciate the difference between live content and studio content. all i meant was that i saw him right before the album dropped, and his set was full of really fresh and amazing shit (probably one of the best electronic live acts i've seen), so i assumed what i was hearing was a foreshadow to the album. the fact that his performance had so little to do with the album itself is in its own right impressive and intriguing. but none of this changes the fact that i really want to get my hands on some of that shit i heard at panoramabar!

| #22 / Tue, 08 Jan 08 18:51 since he was doing a "live" set at panorama we just expected to be able to come by a bit more of the material we heard. that's all. tracks from this amazing live set still pop into my head at work more than a month later.
album is incredible, btw. a meticulous job very well done.
is any of his old stuff golden? i've had a hard time coming by it. any of the stuff produced under his other monikers?

| #23 / Tue, 08 Jan 08 19:58 Hi everyone. Was pointed to this *very* nice review of my album, and read some of the other posts. Thanks so much for the kind words regarding the album - much appreciated. RE: Panorama bar This was all my music. Tho some vocal samples may have sounded in the club similar to vocals elsewhere, you can rest assured that everything that was performed was mine and mine alone. The vocals that I used are from an up coming EP that should be out later this year. The vocalist being Caro (aka Randy Jones). The set at Panorama bar was recorded, and tho I am not 100 percent pleased with it, the recording turned out nice. I have been thinking of possibly posting it on my web site next week as a sort of free thing to accompany the album. Not that you can't get the album FREE anyway, but as a gesture to those very kind people that still buy music. You know who you are So, people, thanks for your time and happy new year.

Hmm. It's definitely not out yet. You must have bought a promotional copy. RE: Mutek. Not sure about that. I played there three years ago. I think that artists usually only play there once. Of course I would love to again.

When will this be available in the U.S., and where will I be able to get it? I am very much looking forward to this release. Thanks.

Yeah, I downloaded a copy of it - I've been waiting so long for it! But I promise to buy it when it comes out here in Canada. or maybe I'll just give you $20 when I see you at Mutek this year...because you WILL be there! hahah ...You could just be like Hawtin and "just happening" to be playing in Montreal the same weekend of Mutek...

I wish I knew more about the distro for the US. I'm pretty sure that since Syntax closed, it's gonna be a bit tougher to find in the US. With Watts gone as well, *everything* in the US is gonna be ruff, as far as dance music is concerned. We are entering a new era.
Easy, B

uh, that set you posted of "bruno pronsatio" is douchy lounge-house. it can't be Pronsato

| #46 / Mon, 14 Jan 08 17:40 because its deep? (wtf is douchy lounge house) Villalobos plays this stuff too, all of a sudden do we try to categorize him as something just because you heard a set of his that sounded different?
If you are telling me that i could put up 5 sets with no id3 tag info and you would be able to id them, i would be very impressed. Sasha might play the same set in every town he hits, but the good dj's play different for different venues, cities...ect. Oh its the typo.

| #47 / Mon, 14 Jan 08 18:04 (I'm glad your post in which you call me an idiot has been removed. It's not very nice to wake up to an email indicating someone's calling me an idiot on the forums.) Well, no, I probably would not be able to ID 5 random sets. However, I do have nearly all of Pronsato's productions (including others under different aliases, such as Half Hawaii) and I have quite a few recordings of his live sets. And, no, he doesn't play the same tracks in each set! He does, however, have a particular 'signature sound' that is sometimes dark and growly, and other times it's more bleepy/spastic (sorry for the lame adjectives!) and now he's developed his sound further on the new release, but I've never heard him play the type of stuff that's in the set you posted. And, I think most of his sets are actually 'live pa' in which he draws from his own productions. I just don't want any member that's browsing here to think that what you posted is 'typical,' let's say, of his sound. Perhaps another member or Steve himself would be willing to wade into this debate. Cheers!
