RA News
Third album from the Kompakt discoteer promises to dispense with the vocals (mostly) and keep its eye on the dancefloor.

Justus Köhncke - Safe and Sound cover
RA Review
Justus Köhncke’s two previous full-lengths on Kompakt, Was Ist Musik (2002) and Doppelleben (2005), were slightly frustrating affairs. Both albums were filled with clever pop structures, quality sound design and subtle shifts in mood, but somehow they tended to fall short of pure emotional capti..

yep i'm a fan of this one too. sometimes he can sound a bit thin (although the lightness of touch on 'Albatros' is a bonus in that instance) but this is definitely more fleshed out. really informative review too!

this review is spot on.

i was giving safe and sound a listen last night for the first time and loved it.

"was ist musik" and "doppelleben" were average albums and overall let downs for me.. there were some fun tracks, but the vocals ruined what may have been good tunes and something was definitely missing.

on "safe and sound" justus has really stepped up the production and found that missing piece to a full and richer sound. plus, he saved the vocals for his side project, which let the disco side take over and rule.

if you liked the other two albums or any of the singles/remixes.. this new disc should easily become your favorite.

Great album. Didn't truly make an impact on me until the second listen, however.

from what i heard, he was getting frustrated that no one was dancing to his vocals at liveshows, so was wanting to move to a more dancefloor sound. when i saw him a bit over a year ago, he did a one hour show with no singing.

I just bought it at the record shop today. Simply a masterpiece, with beauty of art and sound!

Listening to it for the first time now as it ended up below a pile of other records, but it's definitely a step up for him! Although I still miss a bit harder punch in most of his songs, they have a nice overall sound. I'm only halfway, but I like what I'm hearing! Sounds like this needs to stay on top of the pile for a while. ;)

Great album. But like Drix I was yearning for a little bit more by means of toughness.

in an 'ideal world' justus koehncke would work very hard on producing a second track on his 'elan'-level. three years ago, koehncke produced a remix of andreas dorau 'september' i also would like to call great stuff: the great deal of his work was to throw away tons of vocals and replace them with a cool and relaxed groove. nowadays, justus tortures his audience with feuerland and wants to be nothing else than disco. he obviously loves disco so much that he couldn't resist his longing for existing in a world done by disco. at csd in cologne, he played a set after his whirlpool buddies nieswandt and clark. pure celebration of pure disco music. never saw koehncke having so much fun before. me personally, i couldn't stand disco music for my whole life. koehnckes fun gave me the worst open-air party for many many years. and to directly mention it: most of the tracks of this release have strange sounds that were either not done clear, clean and strong enough. and there is a very unsatisfying quality of the producing, influenced more by wanting to avoid bigger faults and not influenced from one's wish getting better and better in what you are doing.
