2005's albums was called Untilted, not Untitled.

Autechre - Quaristice cover
RA Review
Autechre’s last full-length effort was Untilted . Quaristice , the latest album, is at best unharnessed, at worst incoherent. I’ve spent the last few weeks trying to digest, and even enjoy, Booth & Brown’s new album and I am left wondering exactly what the duo wanted to express here.

What the hell...2 1/2 stars? Yes, this isn't your average Autechre album but it really is a great piece. Give it a few more spins, maybe it will improve...

2 1/2...psh...

I really disagree with this reviewer, I feel he doesn't really get what Autechre are doing.

In one of their interviews Autechre compared music and musical styles like graffiti. So they see themselves as creating a wildstyle like no one else has, and I think they achieve this, especially in their releases after more structured and easily digested albums like Tri Repetae or Amber. I really feel like they've gone off the deep end, and I love them for it. This is stuff that you can listen to in 5 years and still think "what the f*ck!?!" because no one is even there yet. In fact, the majority of producers out there couldn't copy their style even if they wanted to.

It's like the movie Juno where the girl was given all this avant guarde music from the husband and she says "..oh and I listened to that Sonic Youth album you lent me. It's just noise!"

I think of Autechre as the sonic equivalent of a max ernst dadaist installation. Like his coat hanger displays. Very difficult to interpret meanings in their abstract world of sound without points of reference. But I don't think there's any question that this is art. They're also similarly polarizing as dadaists' work was and indeed much like now respected artists were in their time. Many think their sound is jagged edges of unrefined claptrap. Others like airportpanic think their on the edge's edge of electronic music. I think whatever it is it serves a particular artistic purpose in its own time and place. I just wonder what that temporal connection is, if they had some particular reference point from which to cause this album's production. I think it would be equally acceptable - and equally telling of this genre - if they put this album together "just because". How many albums in the techno world are thrown together really just because. Some artists say they have a purpose in producing this or that record, but really I wonder, which all goes back to the earlier debate in this forum related to the review a few months back of the new Klimek record "Dedications". Is the artist really able to express his influences and objective in producing this music to his audience? I've read autechre interviews and came away with the impression that they're just making this stuff because they can and its what they like and to hell with their detractors. The fact that people pay such close attention to them despite their concerted effort to do what they do whether it alienates people or not is indication enough that this music matters. In that regard it would seem to me that this Autechre's real purpose is that they music for audience reaction, whether they disown that audience reaction or not. So if you're looking for a purpose in their chaotic sound (which by the way has deep layers like a pillsbury flaky crust bisquite, some of which make conventional musical sense) then this one listener's theory.

I just wrote an article called Autechre's New LP 'Quaristice' Brings Experimental Aesthetic

Here's the link to the complete article about it: www.electronicstandards.wordpress.com

The text in English is just below, please scroll down.
Take a look at the links, go to their MySpace, listen to the tunes. It's an amazing LP!

Please tell me your impressions =)

Ah well...personally I think a week is too short a period to really get into Quaristice (esp. with today's attention spans) and yet already this to me feels like Ae's most enjoyable album since Chiastic Slide.

back in march 2003 i thought draft 7.30 is the biggest pile of shit ever. then in may 2003 i realized its a masterpiece, bought it, and listened to it every day for weeks. im still convinced its a masterpiece that reveals new gems with every subsequent listen.

then untilted, i thought it was a pile, and i still do
to be honest i never even managed to listen to the whole thing through

quaristice, right now i think its a pile
maybe even a bigger one then untilted

but all this might change in few years
or decades..

old stuff good, new stuff bad... and sad

Despite being troubled by the fact that I really often don't get Autechre, I still find myself buying their albums and really trying to listen to them. I can't really explain it. Except there are times where something will happen with an Autechre record that just doesn't happen otherwise. One time I was listening to Confield, and I realized I was really rocking out, so I checked the track number. But that's when I realized I was actually rocking out to the guy vacuuming in the apartment above me. The gentle rhthymic noise transformed the brittle beatscape playing from my CD player into funky heaven. Weird.

And that, right there, is why I can't take 'IDM' seriously.

Autechre's structure used to be really great, but sometimes i think about they:
'I'm hyped so i can put any shit out and it will get nice by fans and reviewers'
This album is strangely clumsy.
Guys, come back to old stuff.

Taking as comparison (i dont like that though) get Clark - Turning Dragon and it would destroy this easily.

so the reviewer gave it a week. hm... i say try giving it a month, and then review your review. as always, autechre's sounds are not to be digested easily.

i saw them live yesterday...there is just nothing like it. completely 100% unique.

I finally got to give this a spin, and I must say that my first impression is much better than this review led me to believe. I already feel a closer connection to it than I ever got with Untilted. Also, I think Turning Dragon has some great moments, but I'll take Autechre's madness any day. Each piece seems to stand completely on its own, and I appreciate the short length of the sketches because tackling a 9 min Autechre epic is a real challenge. So many great moments here, but especially Altibzz, Simmm, Paralel Suns. Enjoy!

this album grew on me a lot. you honestly cant give this 2 and a half man. open your mind up beyond what ypu think is enjoyable and actualy focus on everything you hear. 2 and a half is acually a joke.
