Larry Heard: Soul Survivor"House music icon?" chuckles Larry Heard. "All these kinds of titles end up being put on you, but they have never had anything to do with my original goal and intent." catches up with the gentle giant of deep house.

| #2 / Thu, 31 Jan 08 15:55 haha. sorry mindatlarge. A music-loving city for sure. I guess my image of Memphis is of Sun Studios, Stax Records and rock and roll. I blame Hollywood!

| #6 / Thu, 31 Jan 08 18:11 I wouldn't be surprised if podcasts were thrown into the whole bargain of this ra thing in berlin - andy stott doing one this week is a nice coincidence, let's hope there are more!

you know the deal.
i think larry is amazing and i appreciate his "more substance/less hype" approach.
i agree with what he is saying... so many sub genres / not enough "music"/. who cares if its on cd/cdr/dvd/vinyl/mp3 or if its techno/minimal/house/funk/soul ..............is it any good ? - he also bares his thoughts in his track "what is house" (alleviated)(whatpeopleplay.com/beatport.com), which is very similar to sun cant compare, but with a pitched down old school vocal from larry himself.
much more fun under the radar.

| #18 / Mon, 04 Feb 08 20:37 i completely agree with larry that it is a bit annoying to just give the people what they want to hear .. especially since what they want to hear is generally dependent upon agressive marketing telling them what they like .. the whole cristina aguilera rant ..
personally, i can't stand listening to paul van dyk or sasha or almost any of those big name brand djs .. i think they suck.
of course i am in the minority on this viewpoint.
anyway, i really enjoyed reading the words of a veteran old man musician, he makes a lot of sense to me.

| #19 / Mon, 11 Feb 08 21:59 Hmm cant say that it is what i expected but that on its own is good i respect the musical context that he is bringing across im just wondering if mr heard is abit jaded? Sounds a bit like it but hey if i was at it for as long as he has heavens knows where i would be mentally spiritually and musically but i do feel like i understand his sentiment. im started making music to make music interesting stuff differnt but familiar in a way. The goal was to be a musician but somewhere i became an engineer lol but it seems the problem is the same no matter who you are and where you are everyone who is the circumstance of this thing called music we strive to be better all the time sometimes that is hard for outsiders to understand not saying that im not an outsider but im definetly feel an affinity for what he is saying.
