| London’s world-renowned fabric nightclub is a juicy peach? A crisp apple? No,an onion. It has many layers and a soundsystem of such clarity that it’s been known to bring people to tears.......

New user Posts / 6 RA Since / Aug 2007 | #8 / Fri, 22 Feb 08 10:43 yeah, that gig at ATP was possibly the best gig i'll ever see. it took me a few days to realise how awesome aphex was at the same festival as i was still in awe of them. their new stuff sounded really good too, kinda dark, dubby electronica. any group of ridiculous perfections like portishead are hardly going to wait ten years then release something below par though, are they? :-P

 | RA Review When a band reunite with its fan base after an eleven-year hiatus, it feels a bit, for everyone involved, like sleeping with an ex you have truly loved in the past but haven’t seen in a long while. It is a bit awkward at first, since he is now technically a stranger and is a bit more mature and allu..

Doesn't change the fact they both make formally awkward yet oddly alluring music. Actually sounds like the logical step on from Massive Attack's Mezzanine in it's gothic moods and minor chords. An album that gets stronger with each listen.

| #19 / Wed, 30 Apr 08 17:33 Proof, if ever it was needed, that great records do not make for great reviews. I mean, come on: 'Truth be told, as anyone can now see, Portishead doesn’t do musical genre per se: it only does music. Nothing more, but nothing less either.' Say what? The 'truth' is most certainly better off untold if that's what it amounts to. Your Smagghe review was a masterclass in try-hard gibberish, but I think you've (somehow) taken it to the next level here, Stephane.

Sorry Stéphane, but this review sounds like a freshman seminar in indie electronic music writing. It contains a who's who of pop-electronic references and merely makes the same plugs any new Portishead fan would make. I can't take this review seriously and I think it's doling out undeserving praise. The album is nice, sounds like a long version of Videotape, and it may continue to grow on me, but there's something I just can't connect to in the same way as Dummy.

Posts / 259 RA Since / Apr 2005 | #22 / Thu, 01 May 08 00:04 Absolutely loved Dummy and i absolutely love this (wasn't too big on their 2nd). I can't really understand why there is so much talk about old fans disliking Third. I reckon for all those die-hard fans out there who are disappointed with this release there are just as many who like it.
The Rip and Machine Gun are standouts for me.

New user Posts / 5 RA Since / Feb 2008 | #25 / Thu, 01 May 08 03:17 'fairly sure that at any Portishead live performance - whether today or 10 years from today - any song of 3rd will never be greeted with the same excitement as any cut off Dummy. Does that make 3rd a disappointment? Pretty much yes. It's understandable (and admirable, actually) that Portishead want to distance themselves from the trite salon music that downtempo became over the last 10 years, but making sonically abrasive music doesn't necessarily make for a quality album. I hope time and repeated listens will prove me wrong.

1. You buy it 2. You tell your friends you bought it and it's awesome 3. You play it a few times 4. You''ll never touch it again and turn to Dummy in stead.

New user Posts / 2 RA Since / Mar 2007 | #32 / Thu, 01 May 08 23:01 I think its a grower for sure. Always been drawn in by Gibbons's voice and its good to a group who are clearly soo deep into their music, back out again with fresh stuff. liked the review to.

Posts / 93 RA Since / Feb 2008 Location / Portland OR | #37 / Fri, 02 May 08 17:25 i bought a copy, and it came with a free 7" picture disc of machine gun. it's cool, but the 2 lp's are warped (wtf) beyond being okay to play on my turntable. i'm realllly disappointed.
should the distributor or record company replace it? or maybe i should return it at the store i bought it.
