 | RA Review Hyperdub might just be the most inquisitive label in dubstep. First it launched Burial, lately itβs been picking up Japanese 8-bit acts β it is one of those labels that always seems to choose the unexpected. The latest Hyperdub is no exception. Darkstar are a Bristol duo responsible for some of the..

| #1 / Mon, 14 Apr 08 16:06 This one is a bit more subtle than recent Hyperdub but 'Need You' has grown on me quite a bit...love this label for putting out this fantastic stuff. They are quickly becoming a sort of 'new' Warp... While the latter is still fantastic, am very happy these guys take risks with releases like this! The 'Konfusion' release w/ Space Ape next is pretty awesome too.

| #2 / Mon, 14 Apr 08 22:32 I don't understand why Colin Shields would even be allowed to review this. First, the vocals aren't 'Daft Punk style robot' (not all vocoded vocals are 'robot style') or whatever, they are a lot like the vocals on Mogwai's 'Hunted By A Freak', but I guess I can overlook that. Then, Colin apparently rates side B based on its club readiness, a laughable notion if ever there was one. The song clearly ISN'T for the dance floor.
This is all not even to mention the fact that this is one of the most original dubstep releases in a while and certainly doesn't have 'genuine pop appeal', again, whatever that means. Maybe it means that the songs are supposed to be catchy, but if that is it, isn't the whole of dubstep (barring some producers like Shackleton) pop music? The comment is even stranger considering Colin first explains that Darkstar have released some of the more experimental dubstep records as of late.
Finally, if anyone can tell me what the last paragraph means, please do. It is written so opaquely I have trouble figuring out what it is supposed to add to Colin's evaluation of the record.

I agree. I was in a bad mood when I wrote that because of the rating it got. I am a little bit in love with Hyper Dub, I only want to do right by them.

| #7 / Wed, 16 Apr 08 08:20 @ egads: you're right, I don't understand the last paragraph at all either. It appears to completely contradict what was written before.
Personally, I don't listen to dubstep to be 'uplifted', so I'm actually very interested in hearing Squeeze my Lime. I'd rather hear a simmering dubstep track than one that goes for the climax in Daft Punk style (which is what the reviewer appears to have hoped for)!
