Well, that's a must-buy! Wonder where the 'Oktember; release (pictured) fits in. Some of that stuff is already contained in the four albums, but not all of it. Presumably this would fit best in the Mille Plateaux set...

Kind of wish these were available as single albums, but I guess something is better than nothing. Now they just need to reissue the Studio Eins comp.

It's hard to imagine just how Komapakt will manage to reissue 9 LPs worth of music (not to mention the singles) on two CDs and a double vinyl set. Surely this will just be a "best of" compilation, and not a boxset with all Gas releases.

Well, "the four long-out-of-print Gas albums, Gas, Zauberberg, Konigsforst and Pop, are to be re-issued on Kompakt, available mid-May 2008. Brought together on four compact discs" :)

I'm wondering how they're going to fit all that on just two slabs of vinyl with any hope for good quality...

Gas - Nah und Fern cover
RA Review
When Arnold Schoenberg devised twelve-tone serialism in the 1920s, he claimed it would “ensure the supremacy of German music for the next hundred years". Similarly, Kompakt founder Wolfgang Voigt has always been about creating a distinctly German form of music, although this time not in opposition t..

This is really, really amazing. Given the music, the upcoming book should be interesting as well.

I hope the hype and success of this reissue, Tim Hecker's, and Vladislav Delay's reissues will encourage artists and other distributors to purchase the rights to Mille Plateaux, Force Tracks and Force Inc. releases that have long been out of print. That label family was absolutely essential to the movement of minimal music in the late nineties and early 21st century. So many great albums and 12s out of print like MRI's rhythmogenesis, Andrew Weatherall's mix Hypercity, Swayzak's brilliant "Shape Memory Effect", Donnacha Costello's Together Is the New Alone, Random Inc's (aka Klimek) Walking in Jerusalem...the list goes on and on.

It's a terrible shame for the owners of the rights to be sitting on them like this, especially when they failed to relaunch the label family two years ago. I'm sick of waiting for the assholes who fucked around in 02 and 03 and bankrupted a perfectly wonderful set of labels. IF only they'd figured out a business model like kompakt's. They had all the tools and artists at their fingertips and instead they screwed around and tried to produce shite Digital Disco crap...What a waste.

Probably an over-simplistic perspective on why the labels collapsed. I'd love it if someone could illuminate why that label family fell through so I can understand why something so influential had to end like it did and why no one now seems to care (but me).

It's weird but I do miss my Force Inc. family too. They were one of my first labels that I looked to for the latest and most on fire tracks. Swayzak led me there, and I stayed there for their innovative take on ambient house/techno.

In a weird turn of events, Kompakt has just now released their stuff on iTunes here in the U.S. and the GAS box set is available for download. I have listened to it and I must say that as soon as I have 35 bucks to throw down on it, I will. To me, it's POP Ambient 1-4 before Kompakt decided to do that series.

One thing I'm sort of upset about is that now that Kompakt is available on iTunes, that means I, (being a dj) won't have that special track from kompakt anymore because it's available to any old umpty scruntch that has an account.

On the other hand, I am happy that Kompakt is now available for the punters because it opens these kids minds to a whole new world. They finally have easy access to the Koln sound.

The music exists needless to say ; it is extra-ordinary and exceptional. We all know that.

Months ago, I was so pleased to read that these albums would be reissued. I only had a copy of 'Pop' and some stray samples and downloaded (*groan*) tracks of the others. ..And the money they were fetching on the internet ... good grief. Anyway, with such a hyped reissue, I must say I'm a *little* disappointed. I feel that because this oddly seems to be marketed as a new album ('Nah und Fern') - with new artwork and no historical credits - much of the grandiose original artistic intentions are lost. Not referring to the music, but to the garish blue-tone artwork which graces *all* the CDs. I feel that the respective original artworks reflected the music within, and this is now lost. I wonder why Voigt chose to present the reissue in this way.

Especially with 'Pop'. That album is so drenched in saturated sunlight and discordant afternoon atmospheres ... it deserves the faded orange and blue and green photographs from the original album. It's a shame that new-comers will miss out on such artwork.

In terms of this review, I believe it's spot-on. I do indeed hope that 'younger listeners' will find this as a catalyst to explore 'techno's more exciting peripheries'. The very fact that Pitchfork highlighted their 9.2 review is indicative of how Gas may change many young perceptions of the validity of techno and electronic music.

He probably saved those covers for the GAS book (anyone seen that one around?) But I'm must say that is a bit disappointing. Good reason the keep my Zauberberg cd then. LOL

@pwernizor - the vinyl release isn't the whole box set, just a few selected tracks.

Being a huge 'Pop' fan, I signed up to the Kompakt newsletter after hearing about the upcoming Gas rerelease and bought the vinyl as soon as it came out. Then a couple of weeks later the CD box set was also released, so feeling a bit foolish for being so hasty, I had to buy that too..

So as to the vinyl tracklisting, the four tracks are extended edits of tracks from the box set:

A1. Nah Und Fern ('Near and Far'?)
B1. Zauberberg
C1. Koenigsforst
D1. Pop

bought my 'nah und fern' vinyl today for $25.99 in nyc:
the local record store owner here in williamsburg brooklyn has a good sound system and told me that when he got the gas records in, he played it over the stores speakers and a customer actually asked him if he could change the music because it was giving the customer vertigo Nutty maybe the combination of leaning over to dig through records, the visual flickering of records sleeves through his fingers and the repitious chugging bass gas was too much for himLOL

if all you buy is this, it will take the rest of the summer to take it all in. that's a great dollar value in today's world economy. take a chance. you can only reap rewards and arrive smarter then than you are now. for real.

Exceptionnal records. I've recently bought all these releases on Mille Plateaux : I didn't know they'd reappear a few months later on Kompakt.

It's a shame the Vinyl sleeve colours are not the same as those in the CD box set. Instead there are pretty, albeit rather redundant, coloured sheets that sit loosely within the pack.

Gas 1, 2, & 3 have all featured in my dreams recently. These are some of the most unsung works of modernist music in the HISTORY of modernist music.
