It's decent. Looked better on paper than it actually sounded... everything just sounded very predictable. I was hoping he would go for a darker sound more similar to the skulldisco theme but in the end it sounded like a high quality version of your typical dubstep podcast.

If it's as dark as Kode9's DA 3 mix was, I'll be very happy. And if it isn't, well,...there are some excellent tracks on this mix!

outragous bit of mungos hi fi, could be good, never heard of dubstep allstars volumes, can anyone recomend the best (bassiest and danciest)

Check 'em all out: www.discogs.com/label/Tempa
Vol.5 might be danciest, but Vol.3 is my favourite (darkest) and Vol.1 would be a bit of a crossover between dark and dancy.

this is going to be wicked. been such a long time coming too!

the best all stars is by far and away volume 2. Youngsta basically setting the template for how the sound has developed over the past two years.

Appleblim - Dubstep Allstars: Vol. 06 cover
RA Review
The Dubstep Allstars series on Tempa has been in operation since 2004 and, whether by design or not, has always offered a weather vane for the clubbier side of the genre. Volume 6 doesn’t break this template, but in Appleblim’s hands it widens the parameters of past installments to focus in on a..

But of course you'd say that. Your next gig is Hercules & Love Affair! Do the internet a favour and keep your drivel to yourself. Either that, or post something worth posting. Ta.

Definitely my top mix CD for the year. The mix is basically a 'best of' compilation of the darker/technoey side of dub-step which I've been in love with all year. The way its mixed is also pure class. Keep expecting big things from this DJ / Producer!

Oh and the 2562 album is great! I don't think he's still finding a personality...he's got that dry, crunchy dubstepno sound down!

That's a bit harsh isn't it? Everyone's entitled to their own opinion. At its worst, dubstep can be utterly yawnsome. Loved the Appleblim Resident Advisor though and will be sure to check out this mix too.

While we're on the subject of mixes, this is a great Oneman React FM session

Harsh? Not at all! The comment had nothing to do with the mix in question and only serves to whine about a genre of which the poster obviously is not a fan. I think elektro is horrible. Does that mean I should post this criticism at every review that is published which relates to this genre?

I'm going to check out this Applebim mix asap. Everything I've heard of him up to now is great!

blimey. thats a strong response to a flippant remark. I used to love dubstep, I've even released a couple 12's of it. I still do have a lot of time for Benga & Burial too. I just woke up one day and decided it was real dull. Suppose thats how it go right. My comment *was* directed at this mix as by scanning the tracklist I see it pretty much sums up everything i've come to dislike about the dubstep sound.

I'm not sure how it's possible to wake up and decide a whole genre is dull, period. THAT'S harsh. Especially when the genre in question is positively flowering (in many people's opnion, at least)... Burial and Benga you say? Two very big names, two totally different sounds, both pretty canonical by now. Not really sure what to make of what you're getting at to be honest. Perhaps you could explain your greivances with dubstep in its current guise(s)?

Every genre of has their dull moments unfortunately. some more than others.. i personally think watching dubstep merge with techno is one of the more interesting developments in electronic music.

My thoughts exactly, especially since I got into dubstep more from a Basic Channel/ Monolake perspective. I still love d&b too, but it's this kind of clean and cold Burial sound that really does it for me. Applebim, Martyn, Peverelist, etc have filled the space in between perfectly.

I suppose Benga's dubstep should be fun at parties, but at home it just doesn't work for me.

Disappointed with this one, it's a bit lightweight/commercial, was hoping for something a bit deeper and moodier, maybe not Burial but at least heading that way.

Edit: The mix is a mess (especially the second half), it's like someone has thrown a handful of vinyl at him and told him to mix it the best he could. 4/5? No chance. Save yourself some cash and get the podcast for free.

The problem with this compilation (and the problem i have with dubstep as a whole nowadays) comes back to the fact that when the sound first emerged way back when and i used to tune into Rinse FM in the car or wherever I'd constantly be shocked by just how creative and *deep* the music was. On so many occasions i'd have to pull the car over, turn the engine off and just sit there taking it all in. These tracks were just collosal yet beautifully sparse.

I think the change came when clubs like FWD started drawing larger n larger crowds and producers began to feel the need to have more dancefloor/dj-friendly elements to their tracks. Build, build - DROP,.. roll, roll, roll, break-down,.. 2nd DROP,. repeat to fade. It becomes tedious after a while. Around the same time the 'signatures' started to appear.. shit like wobble, crackle, digi-dub stabs, rasta samples etc etc.

The thing about 'waking up one day' is poss an exageration but its just that I'd been consuming a *lot* of dubstep and not much else. I began listening more to techno again and some mathy metal, both of which are so incredibly rich with progression right now, and above all a depth and character which dubstep seems to now lack.

Anyway.. excuse the lengthy post. Felt it necessary to explain all that :)

thats definitely an understandable point of view indeed. i do agree that dubstep can almost be comedic in its predictability and that it is likely that it can settle into this kind of sure-fire dancefloor smasher formula; much like the same way drum and bass did only a few years back when guys like pendulum came thru.

but i think there really is some positive things coming from the genre that will hopefully overshadow run-of-the-mill dancefloor fodder that is being produced at a rapid clip. as the genre matures, i feel that it in itself will splinter off into several subgenres much like the way every other major dance music genre has.

in regards to the appleblim mix, i think that it is a solid representation of how rich and diverse dubstep can be. obviously you can't please everyone while trying to make a cohesive mix of tracks, but i think that there are plenty of bright moments here that warrant repeated if not several listens.

I disagree that the tracks by Komonazmuk do not do it for the listener. Cheeky Herbert is a badass track!

Still listening to this after 5 years. Definitely one of the best (if not the best) Dubstep cd mixes ever!
