Betty Botox - Mmm, Betty! cover
RA Review
This release is one big can of worms. Are re-edits creative? Are bootlegs ethical? Does our obsession with retro mean there's nothing new to say? Is rarity important?

It seems like there are a lot of cover coming out that look like the Isolée's 'Western Store (edit2)': Move D, this one, is it the same ilustrator all the time?

You really can't think of a single DJ or producer out there that rehashes the sound of the 80s in one fashion or another? It's only been the most enduring popular trend in dance music since January 1, 1990. Why don't you head down to the nearest 80's night at your local dancehall and ask the DJ his name? Then you'll know someone. A less sarcastic suggestion: what about Richard X and Girls on Top (in the early 2000s) with their awesome mash-ups, which came out before too many djs and satellite radio burned us all out on this turntablist style? I don't think anything beats the bastard child of Whitney Houston's 'I wanna dance with somebody' and Kraftwerk's 'Numbers' that Girls on Top bootlegged.

No offense to you, Jacob. You're review was well written and all, but I just can't be convinced that revisiting the 80s synth-pop sound with little more than the one trick pony of a jilted beat thrown in is worthy of praise, let alone a 4.5 rating. Gets the white people's asses shaking just like any 80s night should, but it doesn't mean its good music. The difference I think is exemplified in a comparison between Shed's latest and Betty Botox. Whereas BB was clearly working hard to sound like Talk Talk and Human League, Shed took early Model 500 and Derrik May styles and blended them with more recent minimalist tendencies and gave birth to something entirely new. Whereas Shed created something new and now, Betto Botox is living in the past.

I disagree. Firstly, half of the tracks on this aren't from the 80s and surely the point of projects like this is quite clearly to take things from the past and make them relevant to now. I don't think that is living in the past.

Also, I think these are all officially licensed rather than a bootleg.

Bareklik i could agree with you if my analysis of music simply extended to what decade it was from. In which case we could be saying that Lindstrom is identical to Scissor Sisters and that Richard X and Jurassic 5 make the same sort of music.

Of course the 80s has been revisited, but it's the synth-pop/italo clean electronic sound that has been thoroughly strip-mined. The clanky proto-industrial stuff that Betty Botox and Optimo cover, however, is far less often referenced, and definitely not in the form of re-edits.

If however you feel that Richard X really sounds like Optimo then I can just LOL hard and we'll leave it at that.
