Flying Lotus - Los Angeles cover
RA Review
The cover of Flying Lotus’s Los Angeles will remind most viewers of the hybrid car-beetle of Massive Attack’s Mezzanine . Here, though, the final shape and form of the flesh are only suggested; there’s something insectoid in the angles, yet the tissue seems softer and more yielding. Within its ic..

agreed... what will the clever guys at warp records sign next? this was a brilliant album that grows and grows on you. at first its gritty and kind of displaced, but spin it again and again and you'll be hooked! catchy tracks in the most obscure way... recommended.

Agreed amazing album, not heard something like this for a long time that I've been so impressed with on first listen. Sublime use of samples.

Sure to be an any discussion provoking 'Best of '08' lists...and rightly so.

Most accomplished and original album i've heard in a while.

Pure excellence.

Totally agree with everything that's been said about this one, absolute quality. This is exactly the direction electronica/house/techno should be moving in - complex, layered, intelligent music.

This thread's turning into a bit of a stroke session for Flying Lotus, but the album really is that good.

I think it will be the best album of the year for me! It's so good I bought it twice! MP3 then a signed copy of the vinyl! Either I'm really sad or it's actually that amazing...honestly probably a bit of both!

he was excellent at sonar. rocking out on his laptop with a massive grin on his face :)

Solid at Mutek too. He played this one track that I completely recognized, though I had never heard of him before. Really great track. And he even said 'Who in here knows this song?' and everyone cheered. No idea what the deal is with that, but it was definitely a nice, laid back hip hop groove ala RJD2 or DJ Shadow in his prime. Would love to figure out what it was (not on this abum)...

what a hell of stupid comparaison? how can people compare Flying Lotus with Rjd2 and with dj Shadow (and dj Cam... I read somwhere in France). It is ridiculous. FL is creating proper smashing grooves while Rjd2 is simply making beats using his mpc like a schoolboy. The only artist that FL can be really compared to is defintely and only Jay Dee.

Or any of the other people currently making similar music such as Samiyam and Hudson Mohawke

This really is very, very good...
And the comparison to Prefuse 73 the reviewer makes is valid. Its similar in texture and sounds but there's something less glitchy and more funky about this release that makes it fantastic. :D

Between this and the new Clark album from earlier this year, Warp is really killing it.

Reminds me of the late, lamented J Dilla in the sheer verve and breadth of his beatmaking. Refreshing and brilliant.

it took me probably close to 15 listens to get my head around flying lotus's essential mix but i am really starting to like it...recieved Los Angeles through the post tonight and am on the second listen...enjoying it which is a bit surprising...gunna give it a few days break and then get stuck back in...im hoping it's going to be a album for life!!!
