 | RA Review On Stabil , his 2006 debut for Raster-Noton, Kangding Ray (David Letellier) took the label's signature high-end frequencies and precise digital rhythms, and added traces of acoustic tones and melodies. The album largely retained the label's cool austerity, but touched on something warm beneath the..

| #4 / Fri, 01 Aug 08 20:23 This isn't bad, but it sounds like Telefon Tel Aviv, all the SMM acts on Ghostly International (particularly Lusine, Midwest Product, and Kiln), Morgan Packard on Anticipate, and most of the 12k line up (esp. Shuttle 358). In other words, Kangding Ray's got a good thing going for him here, but it's not that original and kind of dated (to me anyway). Well written review though.

| #5 / Fri, 01 Aug 08 20:55 Okay so it sounds similar to other things out there. Who cares? I take what I said back. This album is great, especially 'A Protest Song' and 'Downshifters'.

| #9 / Wed, 06 Aug 08 04:29 I'm a sucker for post modern, minimal, spartan design used on digipak CDs by lesser known artist who have accolades stacked and shelved by their peers. The Rastor Norton label is the 1st big hint you are close to a great discovery. It is also a dead give away this super package holds something unique and original as possible.
I failed to land a copy of the 2007 Kangding Ray 'Stabil' last year and still wonder where was I? Not this time around. I nabbed the 1st disc in town and am amply rewarded. I hear the Orb, Akufen, Gas, and some 12K, Kompakt influences. He's done enough to make this his own and deserves a spot in the Sir William Basinski boat embarking down river for ports unknown, at the moment obvious to all. Spot on range of styles get a workout that somehow connect rather than repel. I put this in my top 10 for 2008. It'll hold. It's tough stuff with coarse class.

| #10 / Wed, 06 Aug 08 04:29 (Edited: 6 Aug 08 04:41) pay close attention, and play repeatedly. there's much here to greet and groove devotion and attention. i didn't see this one coming. arriving just in time to help stave off some warped media misanthrope madness. this is future.
