Sorry, I know that a lot of people love Ritchie, but this gets a bit ridiculous... As a veteren of the Southern Ontario and Detroit scenes I can absolutley say that Ritchie never performed to this level. While his Decks FX and 909 were an innovative approach to DJing, having seen countless shows from him in this period, it is clear that what Milligan is doing is a level beyond. In fact bringing techno DJing to a level more usually associated with hiphop then straight up club music. In retrospect, Ritchie's DecksFX909 period wasn't that special DJing wise, as he used the 909 to provide a constant rhythm, over which he attempted to beatmatch records. And when all else failed, he could rely on the flanger effect to cover his fuck-ups mix wise, while the 909 kicked steadily on. Don't get me wrong. Ritchie is a very influencial person who has done a lot of good for this scene, and I have enormous respect for him, but don't put him up on a pedestal for his DJing. He never was and never will be as talented as Milligan on the decks. And for the record as well, Milligan has been pulling this shit off as long as I've been watching him, which dates back pre 1996. He's gotten crazy good in the meantime, but as he's been doing this forever it's no wonder why he's gotten so good.

funny you should mention that, because i was actually having a discussion with someone the other day how ian hind from windsor, ca (if you know him, thumbs up) was better at doing richie than richie was, but he got absolutely no credit for it. i, too, grew up in detroit, and yeah...i've seen richie slay it...but you're right - whenever shit got loose, he could easily step on that foot pedal to his dp/2 and go bonkers on the flanger. still...he rocked more than enough parties, and you know it as well as i that to do the decks, efx + 909 shit for 10+ hours was, and still is, pretty fucking amazing.

WOW... you really think that Richie was doing anything close to this??? I suppose he really has fooled a lot of people. Richie has many tricks and gimmicks which he exposes in his linear mixing style and while I have had many great experiences dancing to his sets (I like Techno), NONE of them compare to what Milligan is capable of. Being that I am a technical DJ and big supporter of this sport (there are too very few of us) I am impartial to Jeff's style so, perhaps I am a little biased. But, the fact remains that Richie could not even manage 3 decks consistently as well as to chop it up and piece it back together like this. He's 90% marketing and 10% technique. It is kind of like comparing apples to oranges at this point though. They are fundamentally different styles played typically for different crowds. Milligan does well in a tight venue where you can get close and connected with him and Richie likes to be high above the crowd in a BIG ROOM where you cannot really see his simplistic approach...

I'm always left wondering about the impact of the sound without the visual.
Thanks.
