Jus Wan - Action Potential / Affletic cover
RA Review
Many think that dubstep has ignored the important lessons to be learned from drum & bass and is headed down a similar alley, i.e. rowdy midrange jump-up music which caters to the lowest common denominator. There's plenty of dubstep adhering to other aesthetics, of course—the techno-influenced dubste..

'The dubstep techno alliance was a breath of fresh air when these ideas started making their way to the dubplates of DJs about 18 months ago. But now, some of the charm has worn off and the music needs to go somewhere. '

totally agree with this

Ive bought loads of the techno/dubstep stuff this year but apart from maybe 2 or 3 records, I cant ever see them being played anywhere else but my bedroom.

I think the way forward for this stuff is the more garagey sound of Ramadanman and Hessle Audio, stuff that actually has dancefloor energy but continues the spaceyness of techno. Read a good comment that described some of the step/techno stuff as 'wading through syrup'

btw this 12 is top stuff...glad to see Applepips back on track after the awful 'Over Here' release.

i agree with you about the 'over here' remixes 12' being very weak. this one is OK. the next two, by T and Ramadanman, are phenomenal. especially the latter.

siquick, i'd have to disagree about this year's 'techstep' offerings being mostly bedroom material. that's simply wrong. firstly, there have been a shedload of bombs released of that ilk since the start of the year (by the likes of 2562, martyn, rsd, headhunter, trg, ramadanman, breakage, f, likhan, skream, peverelist, pangaea, etc, etc), and secondly, these tunes sound utterly devastating on decent soundsystems (mass, plastic people, etc). either you haven't heard this stuff on a good enough rig, or else you've lost your marbles! for me, this has been without doubt the best year yet for dancefloor-oriented dubstep-cum-techno, and this jus wan release pretty much sums it up. appleblim opened up with it at dmz a few months back, and when the bass dropped, bedrooms were the last thing on my mind! just my opinion...

Case in point; 'Phase One' by F/ Entire Headhunter album (particularly Birks Range)
