but the list this year is quite good nonetheless. i have loved some of cadenza's releases this year, but have loathed others, which makes me very confused as to where it should be placed. and perlon at 3 is a little high imo, even though i love perlon more than probably any other label.
just glad to see minus doesnt have an automatic shoe-in, which i feared.

| #7 / Mon, 08 Dec 08 19:10 Mojuba/Artless were better in 07 than 08.
and Perlon? really? i love the label, always will, but this was definitely not one of their better (or more active) years.

Posts / 20 RA Since / Oct 2008 | #8 / Mon, 08 Dec 08 19:14 Given labels have to do so much more than simply put out a release or two to survive it makes it much more difficult to pick favs. Judging them based on brand, events, products, exposure, artist live performances... as well as the music they're releasing makes it hard.
M-nus is a funny example. They had a huge year exposure wise with the contakt shows and the genius pr of everyones favorite invention 'the cube' ...but musically they've been boring.
Other notable labels (not so much for releases): BPC, Desolat, Mobilee, Skull Disco
Based on the music: Cecille, Circus Company, Ghostly, Diynamic, Ostgut

Its funny bc they really weren't super active- however, I think everyone was so impressed with Villalobos' "Vasco EP" and STL's "Lost in Brown Eyes" that they were ranked highly by most contributors. Despite being a low volume year for Perlon those two releases were really, really, really excellent. Particularly the STL went under people's radars for some reason although its a very sick 12''. I'm surprised Planet E didn't make it in...I thought hey had a solid year with great releases by Sebastien San, Ican, Kenny Larkin, Jona and Martin Buttrich. I can see how times and fashions have changed away from their sound though.

for what it's worth, i voted for sandwell! always hard to get the right balance with these things. on the whole, i reckon it's not too bad, even though i disagree with quite a few of the results... for example, i love dial, but in my books they had a seriously disappointing year. seems like they made it just on rep...

| #22 / Tue, 09 Dec 08 01:22 everything looks nice but there's few thing i can't be ok with. 1st_ how come m_nus didn't make it to top 20, after realising such monster realises like Dear Painter Paint Me by Heatthrob. Kolimar by Barem Blank Fade by Gaiser Spook Trax JPLS, Mark Hule's Sixty Four and many other ep's.. i don't think this's fare, this label was on top of all discussions all year long, even Richie's magical-bullshitical cube, they deserve to be in top 20. 2nd_i'm not a big fan of Get Physical Music, but i think they done very good this year... one of the best track (tool) of the year Roar by Patrice Baumel, Gel Abril's Miranda and Matthew Dear's very housy and groovy Body Language 7. 3rd_Vakant !! defiantly should be in the list, very surprised not to find them there. and also Cocoon was very active this year, Minilouge's Animals defiantly one the best albums of the year for me. thanx for Circus Companay, Wagon Repair and Cadenza i think this three lables were the best this year, with their amazing dj's and producers. so this will be my top 20 of 08.
20_Get Physical 19_Diynamic 18_Cocoon 17_Hello?Repeat 16_Mobilee 15_Moodgadget 14_Sei Es Drum 13_Wolf + Lamb 12_Desolat 12_Dail 11_Spectral 10_Workshop 09_Kompakt 08_M_nus 07_Perlon 06_Cecille 05_Ostgut Ton 04_Cadenza 03_Wagon Repair 02_Oslo 01_Circus Company
would love to see some new stuff from Underl_ne in 09 .)

i don't think quantity of ep's/lp's got something to do with quality of music, as fact Workshop realised only 3 12" this year(workshop 04/05/06) and 2 in 2007, so i think it's all about the quality of tracks... both tracks on Si Es Drum Trompet and Enfants as well r massive tracks... absolutely agree about DFA thou...

im sorry but SIS has made way better stuff than trompet...it was just massively overhyped due to Ricardo playing it...as usual. enfants was alright i guess..its cool if u buy two copies and play them together. but not ground-breaking. and i love ricardo and own many of his records. but i guess ur right about workshop, even though im not too into it..to each his/her own

| #35 / Tue, 09 Dec 08 15:11 (Edited: 9 Dec 08 15:25) Sad to see the top 20 lacking in techno labels since it's been such a good hear for techno releases. Cocoon should have DEFINITELY made it, and Drumcode/SCI+TEC/Treibstoff/Ovum all deserve a shout too... And once again no idea why continues to completely ignore drum & bass after it too has had another strong year, especially for labels like Hospital and RAM, whilst it continues to champion dubstep and labels like DFA, which absolutely amazes me Liebe Detail/Moon Harbour/Freak'n'Chic/Mothership all deserve a shout for amazing releases this year too.

Posts / 174 RA Since / Feb 2007 Location / Oxford | #36 / Tue, 09 Dec 08 16:40 I reckon Perlon has earned its spot, no question!
The Sammy Dee, A Guy Called Gerald, and Portable releases were all extremely strong. In my view, just about everything on Perlon this year was buy on sight, really.

i guess the point is more: when has perlon ever not been a buy on sight label? the sammy dee and guy called gerald releases were not bad, but certainly nothing special by their standards. looking through the discog i'd actually venture to say 08 was perlon's weakest ever year.
