Posts / 168 RA Since / Jan 2007 Location / Freiburg | #1 / Mon, 15 Dec 08 10:06 i do agree: berghain vol 2 compiled and mixebd by marcel dettmann is outstanding and worth to lead the ranking. i do not agree with fabric #41 by luciano: this is imho a weaker testimony of his musical / technical skills, not to say a more or less boring compilation, not only in comparison to the following fabric compilations (âme & metro area) but also to the other mentioned and rated compilations. what a suprise, efdemin's "carry on..." is rated the second best compilation. why not? i like it too, heard it about 20 times and it is still on "heavy rotation" on my ipod.

Andy Stott's compilation was a big revelation for me too. I want all those records now, but they're hard to find.

I totally agree regarding Luciano's Fabric mix. He doesn't deserve a such high raking. Predictable mix which says it all about the artist... I actually can't believe he is still playing Orbitalife and Nesrib today!!

Posts / 583 RA Since / Jul 2007 | #4 / Mon, 15 Dec 08 11:18 Yep, Luciano's effort was boring, like it was recorded a year ago or something. Glad to see Marcel Dettman top of the list, a proper reflection of whats going on week in week out in the inferno that is the Berghain!

It's not about being dated, it's about being predictable!!!

but dettmann's mix is certainly the best i've heard all year. i'll be very surprised if he isn't dj of the year.

because unless mixes have a timeless quality to them, they age very quickly and i can guarantee that very few people will listen to the Luciano Fabric cd in a few months. Actually is there anyone still listening to it? i doubt it. In a time where you can download thousands of dj sets over the internet you really need to come up with something special to make your compilation stands out. If you compare it to, let's say Michael Mayer or Andre Weatherall's Fabric cd, the Luciano mix is very dull. Those mixes were not relying purely on new stuff, the balance new / old / rare / obscure was perfect and the mixing was imaginative. Fabric 41 had nothing surprising and it won't stand the test of time (unlike Marcel Dettman's or the two Fabric cds mentioned above)

i'd be absolutely astonished if villalobos doesn't come top of that dj of the year poll. in fact i bet villalobos could spend the entire year playing only a single track in every one of his sets and come top of the yearly dj poll.

What has this got to do with it? So if you don’t like a dj’s mix or set you don’t say it just because you know him vaguely? That’s rubbish. If you can’t be honest about what you think then what is the point of writing comments? I am not a bootlicker, and what I say is not empty criticism either If Luciano is playing poorly I say it, end of. He knows anyway what are my feelings about the Fabric mix. I usually tell Djs when they were good but also when they were bad!! I think you have to be honest with them and by doing that you're actually helping them. Oh and I usually don't throw gifts away!!!

- these are exactly the compilations i'd put into a 2008 ranking. maybe there's a very early one, SciFiHiFi Vol. 4 by Funk D'Void to add. - another mix compilation i adore is Need 2 Soul Vol. 2 - compiled and mixed by Benji B and Glenn Underground. especially the first disc, the benji b mix, is fascinating. blending tracks with that certain paradise garage feeling (celestial choir - stand on the word - larry levan unreleased mix) together with some detroitish affairs (cesaria evora - angola - carl craig remix // deetron feat. ovasoul7 - i cling) and timeless classic house tunes (âme - hydrolic dog). can't describe how much i love this mix. and the second disc by glenn underground's fine too.

New user Posts / 9 RA Since / Apr 2008 | #36 / Mon, 15 Dec 08 17:50 Dettmann really deserves to be #1. His mix is timeless and unlike other mixes you can listen to it to infinity. From old school detroit sound to the steel, sweat and sperm flair of berghain, it covers all bases. alone the fact that 'warped mind' by shed appears on berghain 02 makes it my favorite compilation!

So where are those other genres like deep house in all of those polls, including this one of course I'm asking!?
