I can't believe nobody mentioned the Osborne album...so good and one of the few house/techno albums that was more than a collection of 12inches.

I really think Dinky's album should have at least made the top 20!

i cant believe black dog's radio scarecrow and luomo's convival couldn't make the top20. i'm disappointed, yeah.

actually, all of your xy of 2008 is pure rubbish, focusing on trends that maybe cool right now but will be embarassing in the next year or 2010. i can't believe that after all of the years resident advisor has become a shitty-pretty all about fashy minimal/techno/dubstep site.

I totally agree with Flynn... I don't understand, if you can report cool news about everything, that is exciting in electronic music, why are these year-end charts full of mediocre minimal & dubstep stuff. Where's Black Dog, Lulu Rouge, Cut Copy, The Bug etc.
For me, it's like you guys have heard only ca 50% of the albums and mixalbums that were really important in 2008...or your musical horizons are not wide enough...

An other brilliant album on Ostgut! After Dettman's compilation at number one i start to see a trend here...

i go prosumer & murat tepeli, lee jones, shed, scuba, max tundra, bruno pronsato, hercules and love affair, loco dice, ricardo, mark-henning...

i don't really see how the list is 'full of mediocre minimal & dubstep'...it's far more varied than I was expecting it to be and there's a huge range of sounds on there!

At least three writers put it in their top five (published below the Resident Advisor top 20), and it made many more top 20 lists.

All of these albums were voted for multiple times in individual writer's lists. They just didn't have quite the consensus power that our top 20 list did. As the intro states, we heard all of these albums...and more...250 albums were mentioned overall by our contributors!

Well a pretty good list most of my favorites mentioned - loco dice, minilogue, bruno pronsato, shed, deadbeat.

I miss two albums in the list - Butch's Papillon (in my opinion one of best three albums this year, I am considering only CD1 i.e. the new material) and SCSI-9 album.

I saw someone mentioning Kalkbrenner's Berlin Calling - I love the album, and if it contained only new material It would deserve a top 5 mention on my list for sure. But most of the stuff on the album is previously released material on Bpitch so I would not categorize it as a new album :)

I know everyone says "I can't believe no-one has mentioned _______", but, well, I genuinely can't believe no-one has mentioned Mike Shannon's Memory Tree: skitterish, detroitian lushness for the floor or the sit-around-and-play-cards-and-toke night in, and a million miles from the minimal yawnathons that get many Resident Advisor folk's todgers tumescent. One of the best producers out there, no question.

Other than that, out of the ones I've heard, would have to say:
Theo Parrish, Sound Signatures
The Mole As High As The Sky
Claro Intelecto Metanarrative
Mark Henning Jupiter Jive

By the way, does anyone know what's happened to Isolee. Where he go?

I was thinking the same thing. I have "16th Stage" stuck in my head as I type this.

I'd be interested to see the top 50 or even 100. No recaps or write-ups necessary, just a list to see where everyone's favorites converge.

I didn't realize I could really nominate Sound Signatures Vol. 1 as the vinyl album was released in 2008 so there was only a few extra tracks that were 'bonus' on the CD in 09. Otherwise that would have been probably my number 2 or 3.

For all you haters saying your underground choices didn't make the list, volunteer to write some event / record reviews a bit for Resident Advisor and maybe next year you can contribute to these lists as well ;)

Hahaha nah man, I'm using haters in a non-aggressive way ;) I just like the expression.

Anyways, how did anyone else not recognize the brilliance that was Clark's 'Turning Dragon'. I really thought that album would be the furious kick in the shins necessary to maybe jolt people out of this elevator music / "deep house" coma. Ah well.

hard to complain about this, very unsurprising list. listing 20 albums i really liked in any genre this year is pushing it for me... let alone 20 good electronic ones.

suppose i'd expect the 2xcd of sound sculptures volume one to get more votes. not my favourite theo at all, but prefer it to almost everything on this list.

My top 20 for 2008

1/Terre Thaemlitz (DJ Sprinkles)-Midtown 120 blues (will be released in Europe on the 29th of January but it's already out in Japan, therefor, this masterpiece deserves to be listed here.

2/Move D & Benjamin Brunn-Songs from the beehive
3/Kangding Ray-Autumn Fold
4/Lindstrom-where you go I go too
5/Osborne-Osborne
6/Petar Dundov-Escapements
7/Mike Shannon-Memory tree
8/Huge Hephner-Nymphomatriarch LP
9/Shed-shedding the past
10/Deadbeat-Roots and wire
11/The Mole-As high as the sky
12/Marcin Czubala-Chrinicles of never
13/Lee Jones-Electronic Franck
14/Dave Aju-Open wide
15/Kenny Larkin-keys, strings, tambourines
16/Los Angeles-Flying Lotus
17/Prosumer and Murat tepeli-serenity
18/Beat pharmacy-wikkid times
19/Hercules and love affair-hercules and love affair
20/Kelley Pollar-I need you to hold on while the sky is falling

My bigest disapointements this year.
B12's coming back with "The last days of silence".As an old fan I was so happy when this has been released.I found the album totally boring and uninteresting from A to Z.

Sten-The essence was also a huge deception.

For 2009 I would really want to see a new Isolée Album coming. It's been damned too long now.

exactly. well called. as i said with dial and the top labels, for so long under-rated and now over-rated after a disappointing year by their (very high) standards.

tibal - shannon in top 10 and pining for isolee: i dig your style

big bernardo - fair do's with the non-aggressive use of "haters" (even though i don't think it's a cool word in any sense - a bit like "loser" - since it's symptomatic of the tendency for us narcissistic moderns to use overly emphatic words, as though every expression had to be an advertising slogan. be gentle!)
