I go there every year since 2004, and I have to admit that this festival has gone more and more attractive to festival travellers. So if Resident Advisor is the platform for those Easypeasyjetset ravers, I would like to discuss about your meltin' experiences.

went last year, was the nuts. Steve bug and Bjork were highlights for me. And not forgetting the sleepless floor! If you live locally its worth going just for that as last year it was on the outside of the fence so no need to buy a ticket!

amazing line-up (although i´m not too sure about oasis), fantastic location, and a devoted crew. melt 2007 was the best (and best organised) festival i´ve ever been to (and i´ve been to loads). however, it should also be mentioned that last year´s festival was (due to shite weather as well as some major organisational cock-ups) a bit of a disaster (and you know the details, hendrik ;)) and that the melt-website got bombarded with complaints by seriously pissed-off customers afterwards.

well, maybe we should give sick sinus the chance to give us his point of view on the matter as he´s one of the staff. i will then be back to comment.

talking of criticism: you can´t give both leeds and manchester as location, nwra. it´s either the right or the wrong side of the pennines, yorkshire or lancashire, god´s own country or scumland. no split loyalties allowed there, mate. ;)

Hello, fellow techno lovers! Can I ask for advice - if there's only two of us, both coming from outside the EU, then what is the best course of action logisticswise? Is this an event that definetely requires a car and a tent - I meen - would it be like an hour from the nearest train station, and is there no nearby BnB? Thanks, and hope we all make it!

most hotels and bnbs will be booked out (mainly by artists, labels, bookers, media etc.) so camping will be the best option imho (it´s for free, and near the festival site). you won´t necessarily need a car for that (there should be trains/buses) but it would be much easier and more comfortable if you had one. i don´t know what the nearest train station is but you should be able to find info on that on the melt website.

Based on the past few years, does any one know when the final acts usually confirm by? Looking at last year's line-up there appeared to be a lot more than this year...

News from Ferropolis: During the last four weeks the Line-up for this year’s Melt! Festival has grown over again and is nearly complete now. We are pleased that Animal Collective, !!!, Anna Ternheim, Glasvegas, Cold War Kids, Matthew Herbert (DJ-Set) and Crystal Castles joined Melt! for their only festival appearance in 2009. But that’s not all: acts like Deadmau5, Brodinski, Klute, Yuksek (live), Passion Pit, The Virgins, Patrick Wolf, Gisbert zu Knyphausen, The Wedding Present and This Will Destroy You will be completing this year’s line-up.
For the insomniacs among you the sleepless floor, our festival-within-a-festival, has also increased. In addition to the previously announced Bpitch Afterhour on Sunday with Ellen Allien, Sascha Funke, Zander VT and Kiki, ND Baumecker, Dinky, Luna City Express, Skinnerbox, Empro and Fabiano will be providing more than 50 hours of non-stop entertainment as for the first time ever the Sleepless Floor hosts DJs throughout the Saturday night (music from Saturday 7 a.m. until Monday open end, in- and outdoor).
And even more news: The Orangerie (a hall with a capacity of approximately 700, previously the "Festival Restaurant") is now the "Intro Palace of the Revolution" on two levels/floors. On the upper floor, like last year, talks with musicians and Intro writers, readings and obscure performances will take place (programme TBA), while the lower floor harbours a fully-fledged indie club featuring the nation's best DJs: along with a few surprise acts, the folks from Karrera Klub (Berlin), Michael Mac (Club NME), King Kong Klub (Ruhr area), Revolver Club (Hamburg), Les Yper Sound (Frankfurt), Fieber Tanz (Münster) and Team Recorder (Berlin) will be warming indie hearts and souls here.??

Detailed information on the daily Line-up is available here. www.meltfestival.de/runningorder

plenty of threads on on that on www.melt-festival.de/forum/viewforum.php?id=4on

in a nutshell: too big/full/commercial, security (some of them allegedly right-wing meatheads) were arseholes, massive queues at the entrance (at times)/trouble with wristbands, some areas utterly overcrowded (e.g.that indoor venue near the sleepless floor) leading to near mass panic, shite communication, acts not playing (e.g. hercules & love affair) due to organisational cock-ups, massive sound-problems (hot chip on sunday were disastrous), not enough buses to/from festival site, not enough toilets/showers etc.pp.

not necessarily my point of view/experience but i thought it should at least be mentioned (for the record).

that said, i think this year´s line-up is fantastic (although i´m still not sure about some acts like e.g. oasis, travis or polarkreis 18), the site is amazing and the crew are (imho at least) devoted and know what they´re doing. if they manage to address/solve the problems mentioned above and the weather´s good it could/should be one of the best festivals in europe.

RA News
Matthew Herbert, Animal Collective, and ND Baumecker are just some of the final additions to the Leipzig-based festival.

Berlinwhite - I have to say I disagree completely with your description. The queue at the entrance was a disaster but just on the Friday. It got moving though and everyone got in ok. I only recall around 20 security guards in the whole festival and none of them even spoke to anyone. The weather was shit but it was't a mud bath. H&LA didn't show but that can happen anywhere.

I also received an excuse e-mail after the festival last year from the organisation with all of the points that berlinwhite described, but I also disagree!
On friday there was a big queue indeed, but everything else is exaggerated, the only thing I'm worried about is that the festival is losing its intimacy a bit.
Other than that: this festival is the best! I really love it....

I agree with twansparant. I also got an excuse email. which I found very charming. it also shows that melt tries to listen to its visitors. Last year there were more people then previous years, but I still think its a very intimate festival. My biggest complaint is that the line up's too darnt good. I will have to divide myself in three to see everything i want 2 :)

Hi guys, need some advice...
1st time at Melt, we're going to Berlin for 4 days before then thinking about renting a car to get to the site, what are the rules with taking alcohol into the camp site? + Are there local shops or is it worth stocking up before (beer, food etc)
Cheers fellers..

there is a local campshop. but stocking up is wise. also you can take everything you can carry onto the campsite.

That is why i was alking about the complaints. Apart from teh fiasco on the friday with the wristbands etc i dont remember the security or any of the other moans being too bad.

hey guys,

my buddy and I (we are from America) are going to be in Berlin at this time and we want to go to this festival. Some quick questions though:

First, is it possible to get to the festival site without the use of a car?

and, are camping supplies sold there or do we have to bring them? What else should we be prepared for? neither of us have been to a big multi day festival before.

well, obviously there were (loads of) people who´ve made different experiences (as indicated by the amount of complaint mails on the melt forum and other forums). and obviously the criticism was so massive that the organisers felt obliged to issue a statement (which is a good sign as it shows that a) they realised there were problems and b) they care).

as said before, not necessarily my experiences but these things did happen. and one´s for sure: if i´d had to pay i would have gone f***ing ballistic last year (and at one point actually did). i´ve talked to many industry/media people (at the festival and in the aftermath) and the general feeling there was: great booking, fantastic location, shite organisation (and none of those people had to put up with securities etc., or even pay to get in, or travel miles to the camping site, or queue at the bogs, or...).

hercules & love affair (not playing) wasn´t the only disappointment by far. i e.g. remember hot chip storming off stage fuming about the horrible sound. i also recall other parts of the site being awfully overcrowded (alexander marcus!) at times due to the heavy rain and everybody trying to push in under a roof.

in a nutshell: could be the best festival in europe (which it was the year before) if they work on certain things. will be even more difficult this year with oasis headlining (don´t get this at all, horrible pub rock rubbish imho) as they´re going to attract thousands of pissed up chavs. fingers crossed the weather will be better and they´ve learned from last year´s shambles.

Yes it's possible to get to the festival without a car: meltfestival.de/en/faq/travel.html There are no camping supplies sold there, you should bring your own, but there are also hotels in the neighbourhood you can check.
The camping site is opened from thursday 01:00 till monday 01:00
You should be prepared for a lot of partying and not a lot of sleep ;-)

that's good, we're gonna be in europe for 2 weeks and we're probably not gonna get much sleep for most of it. we for sure can't afford hotels so we're gonna have to rough it :-)

the site was down when I made that post but now that its back up I see they linked to these guys www.mein-zelt-steht-schon.de/site/
I can't speak any German at all so without an english language version of that site I can't make any sense of it. I sent them an email using google translator but in case they don't reply what's their deal?

Hi folks!
I got my tickets, and a trip to berlin is in the booking, but... not decided yet on how to get to the festivalsite.
My options:
1 renting a car - bit expensive, but carsharing might be a solution.
2 going on the cooltours bus from berlin hauptbahnhoff, which is 19 E pp oneway. but i think thatll be quite a long trip, which i would prefer not to spend in bus (does that sound spoiled? nah, i just dont like busses, having seen plenty of them on too many 12 hours trips here in spain...)
3 train. Meltsite says to go to dessau, and from there by bus. have to look into the details, but gräfenhainichen seems closerby (and faster trains, but not sure if discounts are possible)
The site of Deutsche Bahn says that groups of 4 ppl have discount, and of more than 6 have even more discount. This sounds to me, being of dutch origin, very appealing... So a question:
does anyone have experience with the trainride?
And another, more important one: Would anyone be interested in going as a group? we are 2, so with 4 more, maybe we can benefit from that discount...

well, mail me if you´re interested: mark.oosterkamp(at)live.nl

tickets booked! what a line-up! its my first time going.. will be interesting to see how it compares to Exit and Sonar (my other european festival ventures so far).

hopefully last years probs will be ironed out.. sounds like they were mostly caused by the weather which fingers crossed wont be an issue this time.. and there will always be grumpy people who want to complain about something.

re. travel: Me and 3 mates are going on the festival bus from london, victoria to the festival door arriving thurs afternoon. no hassle, good value and the trip out promises to provide copious amounts of jokes/hopefully meet a good crowd. trip back could be more painful but should be able to pass out for most of it! get on it Resident Advisor peeps from london/UK!

get your festival ticket from lastminute.com for around £85

ticket plus travel there and back for the same amount as a glasto ticket.. it makes so much sense! fookin excited now.

Hey Nick.
Me and one of my mates are flying over to London from Dublin next Wed to get the festival bus. Was originally about 6 of us but only two of us going now due to bloody recession. :) Just wondering have you been on the bus before and whats the story with it. I seen on there terms that ther no drinking or anything allowed and if they feel you been drinking they wont let ya on the bus. Considering its a festival and im presuming Monday morning i wont be in any way sober just wondering if ya have any more info on it. Agreed it gonna be a savage weekend cant wait!!!!!!!!!!

its from outside the station at dessau

coming back leave plenty of time for the festival bus especially if you have to catch flights as it is a bit of a free for all

to people worried about the complaints - dont worry too much this is mainly the moaners having their usual moan

easy niall.
sort your tight mates out! their loss i suppose..ha! havent been on the bus before no and to be honest hadnt read the T&Cs very thoroughly. i reckon they have to say that about drinking (to be seen to be discouraging about it), hopefully they wont be too stringent though.. as long as you turn up clothed and can hold yourself together for the 10 seconds it takes to walk past the driver.. they are hardly gonna leave you behind. im more worried about the way out now as planning to sit in a pub for 6 hours until the bus leaves! guess that rules out bowling on with a crate aswell.. will have to go down the spirits route.

anyways ill look out for an irish looking fella at victoria then. you on bus 1?
