2020 Soundsystem - Sliding Away (Johnny D Mixes) cover
RA Review
It's clear that the current clutch of Mannheim-based producers are overwhelming obsessed with groove. That doesn't necessarily come at the expense of melody, but riffs are a secondary concern to crafting the most powerful boom-tchk house beat you've ever heard. As a result, whenever a producer comes..

my friend was lucky enough to get the promo on vinyl a few months back & hasn't stopped playing it since. i can see this being huge over the summer.

i had the chance to play this in a club yesterday and it came out horribly underwhelming - a filler at best

If this ends up a spring/summer anthem, standards are a bit too low.

Sam identified what's becoming the greatest obstacle stopping me from liking Johnny D: so many of his productions sound like unfinessed mash ups which don't necessarily fit together (see also: "Requiem Of A Dream"). His backing track is so static and standard, he doesn't show much flexibility as a producer. It's one thing to have an uncompromising vision, it's another to just refuse to adapt that vision to the task at hand.

not the most inspiring of tracks. Like pollyfilla,, fills in the gaps.

Good groove, good tech vibe to add to a dynamic set, but I'm not hyping it up in my own head. Fu*k anyone else's hype....

its a 12min. loop...whoopy.

i think its a good tool, and used in the right context can be very nice. Of course on it's own it's nothing special.

its an issue with many tracks of late, a whole lot of groove, but no direction.

love the Vocal Mix. fuckin trippy

Yeh vocal is nice. But I too have played it in a club and seen it seem underwhelming. Its nice and mellow but I think belongs on a terrace in the sunshine. Will be massive in Ibiza.

^ yeah I guess you are right, the vocal sits lightly on the tune. On a terrace set up it will shimmer.

For all you people who don't like Johnny D's works as well as this EP... it's just because you cant understand this new genre in the tech house. For this purpose read one or more of Johnny's interviews where he explains his conception of the music he makes. So this is the idea in his music... nothing special but a groove that makes you nothing else but dance and party... which is the most important in the electronic music, i think...

^ new genre 'in' tech-house? have they named it yet? :p

groove is surely a key to dance floor success, but I won't classify a groove laden track as being an offset of the genre.
