 | RA Review Is Jeff McIlwain, the Seattle techno producer who works under the name Lusine, starting to go pop? Maybe. A little. Sort of. Is this a bad thing? Not at all—in fact, it gives A Certain Distance , his second full album for Ghostly, more reach than 2004's Serial Hodgepodge , and not just because he'..

| #5 / Mon, 21 Sep 09 16:08 3,5 star? Quite underrated if you ask me. The diversity on the album is unique compared to most dance music releases these days and his production is way way beyond average.

| #7 / Mon, 21 Sep 09 17:30 'McIlwain is a subtle and smart producer, and while sometimes he can seem more subdued than is necessary, there's a lot to uncover here.'
For me Lusine's main appeal has been always been how blatantly punchy and unsubtle his beats are! Looking forward to hearing this a lot

| #10 / Tue, 22 Sep 09 05:02 Agreed. This album gets at least 4/5 from me. An excellent, diverse selection of tracks from a producer who just keeps getting better with age...and another notch on Ghostly's belt. They've been killing it this year!

| #12 / Tue, 22 Sep 09 17:13 An ever evolving, different sound, yet still easily recognizable as his own work. To me, it is overall not as good as Serial Hodgepodge, but there certainly are some great tracks on here.

| #13 / Tue, 22 Sep 09 21:06 I kind of stumbled haphazardly unto this album; and I was not disappointed. I want to say that the vocal processing done on the tracks is possibly one of my favorite parts of the album. But I think it may be the layering of synths, beats, and the processed vocals which really tie the whole album together.
4.5/5 for me Id say.

| #18 / Tue, 29 Sep 09 00:41 A Certain Distance is still growing and evolving its sounds to me, each time I listen to it the more I like it.
Alot warmer than Lusine's previous releases and alot more accessible to the untrained ear.
An exclusive live mix from Lusine featuring 3 untitled tracks can be found at Inverted Audio for download, enjoy it!

| #19 / Sat, 03 Oct 09 01:17 I've been a fan of Lusine from his first appearance on Isophlux (*as L'usine), and to be honest this isn't my favorite album of his just yet. Here's the thing about that though, his music has a way of growing on me - 'Serial Hodgepodge' is still his best to me, but that wasn't my favorite when it first came out either. Ask me again in a year and it's likely that i'll see all the goodness in this album that is currently hidden :]
What makes this album still a Lusine album is undoubtedly the percussion production, which haven't changed much over the course of his releases but are without doubt one of his strongest elements.

| #22 / Mon, 19 Oct 09 23:10 (Edited: 19 Oct 09 23:16) I've been following his career for the past 10 years and 'A Certain Distance' is by for his most accomplished work to date. I agree this album deserves a 4.5.
As for this not being 'IDM', THANK GOD! Do people even use that term anymore? It's incredibly pretentious and in my opinion takes away from the emotive quality that many so called 'IDM' artists were actually going for.

| #23 / Sun, 22 Nov 09 02:49 I have really enjoyed Lusine for a while now, but at this point my feelings on this album are mixed. I think that the second half of it is fantastic. Some of his strongest stuff, even. But what he tries to do in the first half with vocals doesn't work very well for me. Just finished listening to his earlier album "Language Barrier," and I enjoy it far more. 3/5.

| #25 / Mon, 18 Jan 10 14:07 this is adult-contemporary, easy listening nothingness. you could play it in the most banal restaurant. if this wasn't on Ghostly nobody would pay it any mind at all.
