Aron also provided a quick hit guide to some other clubs in Amsterdam worth checking out that we unfortunately couldn't fit in the piece. Here are his thoughts:

Paradiso
Massive concert/club venue in a beautiful old church. Dutch people always refer to it as 'the Poptemple', because of its rich history spanning over forty years. Programming is very diverse, with the occasional quality club night. The best parties, like VOLTT, usually sell out in advance.

Club Up
A new club, which is focused mainly on hip hop and soul, but also has some good house nights. Dekmantel hosts some of the best disco/house parties in town there.

Sugar Factory
Situated right off the Leidsesquare, this 400 capacity club attracts a mixed crowd of students, gays, music freaks, all depending on the night.

Flex Bar
Small two room venue. The atmosphere is a bit sterile, but you can occasionally see cutting edge artists in dubstep, house, techno or electro perform.

Studio K
A bit out of town, but nice to attend, since it also has a restaurant and a cinema. Check out the bimonthly Elevator Music nights for the best in quality space disco.

Blijburg
A city beach quite like the ones you'll come across in most European capitals. Difference is that this one's all the way on the outskirts of town, making it almost like the real beach. Huddle around the campfire outside and listen to some guy strum his guitar, or just dance to some kick-ass dj.

def my favorite type of article

although nowhere touches berlin in party terms
the freedom, lack of aggression and respect for the punters is unrivaled - hope it lasts forever!!!

ibiza cannot satisfy hardcore ravers
and the overcrowding, attitudes and security in london clubs ruin it for me

Thanks for the compliments guys! I hope you got a good overview of what's going on in A'dam these days...

2 Tiddlerz:
Sure, Berlin is still unrivaled in many ways, simply because it's a huge place with an enormous creative industry. But I'd say A'dam is definitely the cosy alternative...

love amsterdam but had a really bad experience a few weeks ago when i visited with a couple mates

i dont know if it was how we were dressed or something but when we went to see ripperton as we got to the door the bouncer said

"u guys know what kind of music is playing here?"

i said

"yes.. house.. techno"

he said

"no. minimal. r u sure u know what that is?"

i was kind of confused, coming from london and having been raving to every single type of music from garage back in the day to dubstep to house to minimal at almost every big london club id never experienced this kind of attitude

sure, there was a group of 5 guys, sure most of us were not white, sure some of us were wearing chains or caps... but so what? we were there to vibe out. listen to some beats and have a good holiday in amsterdam, a city we've all been visiting since we were 16

this guy thought that because of how we looked we weren't into his "scene" as if minimal is only for chin stroking skinny jean wearers... in the end he told us we couldn't come in because we "didnt understand the music"... the sad thing is that im pretty sure the dj's playing that night would have played some of OUR music too and i've dj'd alongside ripperton before and even told him how much i was feeling his set when i last saw him play

anyway, im sure this was just a one off.. amsterdam is a great city... if u can afford it, rent an apartment for ur stay, u wont regret it

Hey dplus, that's sad to hear...

Unfortunately, doormen in Holland tend to be total assholes at times. They can sometimes really terrorize clubs with their aggressive behaviour.

A place notorious for its insane bouncers was Mazzo, Amsterdam's best club for techno back in the nineties. Me and Lauhaus used to promote parties there. The place unfortunately closed down in 2005 and for our last night we had booked the Wighnomy Bros. These guys absolutely ripped the dancefloor apart with the most amazing set I've ever heard them play. During their last record, a bootleg version of Louis Armstrong's Wonderful World, people were ready to burst into tears.

Suddenly one of the bouncers stormed into the dj-booth and jerked the needle off the record with a terrible scratch, rudely shoved one of the Wighnomy guys aside (don’t know if you’ve ever seen these guys, bu they’re Germany’s answer to the carebears, totally sweet and peaceful people) and started shouting into his face “I thought I told you this was the last record?!”.

I had just taken the mike in hand to thank everyone and was so flabbergasted I uttered “What the fuck are you doing?!”. As soon as I realized this could be heard through the whole club, I shouted something like “Once again the bouncers of the Mazzo show to have absolutely no respect for the crowd!” etc. etc. And everybody started to stomp their feet and shout for half an hour more, so the bouncer was getting really nervous and kept shouting at the Wighnomy’s.

As soon as everybody had left, he walked up to me and threatened to kill me as soon as I stepped out the door. He actually tried to punch me the first time I walked out and the second time I ran with the Wighnomy’s and a group of six friends into a cab, with the bouncer still making decapitation-signs towards us as we sped away in the car…

Fortunately things have gotten better since then. There are still some fucked up bouncers working in A’dam, but actually all the clubs I described in the feature have friendly doormen. I think it’s one of the most important reasons why these clubs are succesful.

Yeah Delsin does some amazing stuff at the moment, productionwise! It would have been great to mention them as well, true. But 4000 words was already quite a lot and I also wanted to shed some light on dubstep...

As for Steve Rachmad and Stefan Robbers, they are both still very actively producing and playing out. Steve is playing a lot more abroad than at home, in fact, or that's the impression I get. And Stefan Robbers is running the Eevo Next label and still doing a lot of stuff under different monnikers. But he's based in Eindhoven, and you don't want to mix Eindhoveners up with Amsterdammers... they can get pissed off about that - it's one of those second biggest city vs. the capital things ;-)

Good stuff, Aron! :)

@ dplus: the bouncer sounds like a wanker, but still, I seriously doubt that he had even the slightest interest in your skin colour. Large(r) groups of males have a hard time getting into many a place and if I were a bouncer I'm not sure if I'd let people wearing chains (and/or caps) into my place. You've got to draw the line somewhere and chains can be used as a pretty decent weapon too!

Well luckily these days a lot of the clubs have more control over their security and supply them with strict rules regarding the treatment of their clientèle. Its a shame about some people not getting in because they are not wearing the right clothes or look as if they are not there for the right reasons, but usually these enforcements are for the best for the few exceptions of above.

Aron, how is it you get into so much trouble ;)

Bouncers in A-dam are not among the most friendly for sure... I have friends who went for smoke outside and were not allowed to get back to studio 80 even though they had their jackets inside... and the bouncers were unnecessary aggressive to everyone waiting outside. it could have been a one off but still they complain that people are treated disrespectfully every now and then...

another disadvantage are the early closing times in the city... as a result you can rarely hear a dj playing for more than 2 hours... besides that it's still one of the top places to party in Europe...

Unlike London of course, where there are no closing times Monkey

The reason dj's often play for so short is mainly the programmers' fault, and that of audiences who apparently won't be satisfied by only one or two dj's on a night's planning. I suppose that's one of the downsides of having so many talented dj's prepared to play such short sets. I'd be happy if they'd start boycotting that kind of programming and go on strike till we can hear a proper built up set of at least 3 hours per dj!

in ldn plenty of places are going until minimum 7. fabric- easily until 10 on bigger nights.. at special occasions- until noon. also plenty of daytime/afternoon/sunday events in different locations. amsterdam 5 max.(except awakenings) and yes its also about programming...

Yes the bouncers and the new clubpolicy around 2000 were in my opinion the end of Mazzo.
I went there every weekend with friends and on a certain moment as regular guest they didn't let me in anymore since I did not bring any girls to the club..
Times were much better when Mohammed and Marc were on the door, for me this was the real Mazzo time.
Mazzo, for me the best club back in the days of Amsterdam and after this Amsterdam was never the same for me.
Anyway, good article and good to hear Amsterdam is getting more interesting on club an music level.

I guess you're (almost) right about this closing time for a lot of parties/locations. The problem is that in Amsterdam a lot of the clubs are located in residential areas; basically almost all of Amsterdam is a residential area. The NDSM area (across the water) was a good location for quite a while, since there were no houses there, but then they put up student housing or something like that over there too, so the same limits started to apply.

It's a shame on the one hand, but in the end, does it really matter what time a club closes as long as it opens on time? Summer festivals usually finish around 23:00 or 00:00 and they're great! At least they don't wreck my entire week's sleeping habit. I mean, if I've been partying till 09:00 on Sunday morning, no way will I be able to sleep by 00:00 that evening. And still I have to get up at 06:30 for work the next morning :S

Anyway, my point is that the closing times shouldn't matter. Amsterdam's clubbing and the choices that it offers in terms of music have been getting ever better during the last couple of years. Also, I can't help being damn proud of the excellent electronic artists that my country has been producing over the years. People like Steve Rachmad, Shinedoe, Joris Voorn and the entire clan of 'newcomers' (including Aron) are a great inspiration to me and managed to keep it real when the whole minimal hype was threatening to implode and kill the originality of the techno/house scene.

Omg, I almost forgot to big up Martyn and my own town's genius 2562!

Yes, Holland has great festivals and artists. Day time partying is the best: it's very funny to dance and "mess around" under daylight. And yes closing times is not the biggest issue.. i just mentioned it as it has happened too many times to want more because I've had a great night so far. There are sometimes good afterparties... btw rotterdam is also good for clubbing.

Very good article. Dutch techno (particularly from the 90's) has always been one of the biggest influences on my music. I've had the privilege of playing in Holland quite a few times and I'm always extremely impressed by the professional approach in the clubs there. I haven't really seen such organisation anywhere else (although some places come close). Also the infrastructure and support for local DJs in Holland is amazing. Coming from Ireland where there are a lot of genuinely good DJs playing week in week out, but no-one will go to see them, only to the international acts (this could have changed recently, I haven't been living in the country since 2006)... and then seeing packed crowds rocking out to Nuno and Patrice, or Darko and Benny .. it's really very encouraging and I hope that the ethos spreads to other countries as well. Lekker!!!

Really, really nice article. I'm relatively new to Amsterdam and tipping my toe in the (plentiful) water here. There's definitely a LOT of great stuff going on here. I just wish I had more time to take it all in!

The only thing I would say about Amsterdam is that, say compared to peers such as London or Berlin, its far from a 24hr clubbing city. The licensing of clubs and closing / opening times seem much more restrictive. Its seems to be a case of start early and finish early. Or perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places... :)

I should add...

I love living in this city. :)

It's true to some extent. There are a lot of restrictions at the moment, something that a lot of Amsterdammers are revolting against. Overregulation is something we can live without. Last weekend we even had a demonstration on the Noordermarkt demanding more freedom for the cafe's/clubs/terraces. There's definitely after hours going on all the time though. But they're not always as legal as they should be.

... and less frequent than in major cities like L or B... (thank god! Good n Bad )

The same here. In 1998 I went there almost every weekend and had some great nights.
Strange, the early closing time didn´t bother me in this period but now it does.
I also heard Trouw closes extremely early, I don´t understand why this is necessary and hope the demonstration will have some positive effects…

Yep, and the crowd is a mixture of kids and people who are to much busy with their clothing/wardrobe and scared to sweat. They don't dance they just chat about nothing. In most cities you pay 10 to 14 euro's for a clubnight wich lasts some time here you get in at 23:00 and get kicked out at 04:00 - 05:00 for the same price!

In holland they have enough time to create good music (delsin/rush hour) in Berlin they don't, they dance to dutch grooves and just party 24/7 like it's the last night on earth.

I live 15 minutes from amsterdam, but i am more abroad then going to amsterdam.
