Hi,

I recently decided to bite the bullet and learn to mix, so I got my hands on a pair of 1210s and started to get some vinyl

My issue is that I've got several vinyl now that I think might be slightly warped. One side of the record really bites the platter, the side other spins about with the slightest touch, starts off slow when you remove your hand and is generally a real bitch to mix with.

Any of you out there any experience of fixing this phenomenon? They're real class tunes, so they're screaming to be pounded out at volume.

As an aside I get most of my vinyl through Juno and out of about 40 records 3 have come through warped, (another 2 with pressing errors). Any other get this, or is it just my bad luck?

Cheers

if you getting some records warped / or badly pressed from Juno you can go back to them for replacements or a credit.

To unwarp records put them in the sun for a bit then flatten them... works wonders in warmer countries :)

Happens from time to time. Juno are really good with returns though

The trick I heard (but never tried) was to place the record between to sheets of glass and iron it. Reckon it should work in principle, as long as you don't overheat the record.

(Don't blame me if it all goes horribly wrong though!)

I'd firstly return the record if that was an option. And accept that warped records are a fact of life occaisionally.

Hey people,

Thanks for the advice.

I'll speak to Juno & see what they say, but to be honest I've head these records a couple of weeks & not done anything about it, so I'm not sure they'll take em back: More fool me I know.

Failing that I'll give the sunshine idea a whirl... I'll have to wait a couple of months though, this being Holland in the depths of winter. There'll be no sun for a while yet...

Cheers anyway, its appreciated.

yep, the trick is indeed putting your record under a glass plate (or black plastic will do too, basically anything that absorbses heat) and let it simply warm up a little bit, and the weight of the plate will flatten the record. Don't forget to leave it in its sleeve, so don't put the record directly under the plate.
And not too long, or you'll end up with a 15inch record at best or a puddle of vinyl at worst :D

I think what you are describing is not a 'warped' record, but instead a 'dished' one.
The method I found that worked for me, was two sheets of thick flat glass, with the vinyl placed (not in sleeve) between the two glass sheets. Leave the whole thing out in the sun for 15 mins on a warm day, or longer on a medium day. The secret is to bring the whole lot in and leave it to cool for at least 30 mins before removing the vinyl from the glass plates, as it takes this long to really hold its shape.
I have heard of putting the 'vinyl between two glass sheets' in an oven too, but not sure about doing this personally.
Id just have sent them back immediately to juno if I had recieved warper / dished tunes ....

Nice one for the advice, yep, to coin a colloquialism they're bowled to fuck.

Will have to investigate getting some glass from somewhere.

Again thanks for the advice.

Cheers

best bet is putting a hairdryer at the location where the vinyl is warped.
Not too hot though. After that, try forming it flat

wheres the A1 sauce?
