 | RA Review To be honest, I think I might have been ruined by the Moth/Wolf Cub 12-inch. As much as I love Four Tet, the jazz-structure percussion and the lack of a real "good part" has often kept him from being a 10 for me. The injection of Burial's economical drum programs and sharp eye for haunting hooks i..

| #7 / Tue, 26 Jan 10 10:14 (Edited: 26 Jan 10 20:08) ?Hmmm,
This review does not mirror my thoughts and feelings about the album. I know others have said this before me, and I have tended to agree, that when we see RA reviews on anything that orbits outside of the circle of (Tech.Minimal.House.Dubstep.Prgressive), it tends to get a rather sour press, seemingly out of bias.
I own all of Four Tet's work and this is a fine addition, can't really fault it - such an enchanting sound that is coherent and flowing, as short as all his previous albums (~45 minutes) but feels complete so that you wouldn't want to add or remove anything.
With this review, there is a persistant reference to a 'flattening' of, or general 'lack of' bass and low end. But I ask, why is this such a concern on a Four Tet album? That is not what his work is all about. None of this has been tailored for the dancefloor, but rather for the home listener.
The last thing I was thinking when I first heard the mercurial 'This Unfolds', was that 'Hebden's knob twisting has flattened the kick-snare pattern out to the sound of marbles bouncing about inside a cardboard box.'
Bizarre. I rate 4/5.

| #8 / Tue, 26 Jan 10 11:30 Is it a joke? This album is absolutely tremendous. One of the best this century. Usually, I do not agree with Pitchfork, but this time they really appreciated a superb album. Open your eyes, there is a world outside dub/step/minmal/ proggressive and it's f******** awesome!!!

| #9 / Tue, 26 Jan 10 12:43 and i quote on 'love cry' : The ostensible single, 'Love Cry,' is also the album's biggest misstep, though it's entirely forgivable. The macroscopic design isn't at fault—it's Tet's micro selection of parts that brings the track down. With an MOR soul-ish sample, a boring bass buzz and a drum kit that ventures a little too far into Thievery Corporation real estate, it just leaves that thrown-together '90s flavor in your mouth.
EXCUSE ME?????????????????
i am a 100% that one the reviewer has something in his ears that the doctor probably can get rid of with loads of warm water being pressured in his ears, and two; besides this being an amazing album, love cry is an absolute stunner. anyone who has heard that out on the floor will know that. hypnotic, diverse and deep, while funkying away with a devastating beat. what could u ask for more? to describe lovecry as quoted above i just read the biggest miswriting of the last years. my god. my jaw literally dropped to the floor there while i was standing up.

| #13 / Tue, 26 Jan 10 13:18 RA, get someone who is actually familiar with a subject to write your reviews.
'You know what you're in for ... It's a clear formula that's served Kieren Hebden through five previous LPs and a galaxy of remixes'
Just.. no. There may be something distinctive about Hebden's work but that doesn't mean it's formulaic. What the hell is 'circular structure'? Did you use that phrase just so that you could call Rounds 'aptly named'? And yes, as already mentioned, this is not music created specifically for the dancefloor, even if he has been influenced by it recently.. your evaluation of the greatest moment of the album as being the point at which it is most like early Underworld reveals the whole attitude you took towards this review.. severely misguided. Although actually, that was pretty clear from the start, with the 'lack of a real 'good part''.

| #17 / Tue, 26 Jan 10 16:26 if i was the editor of RA i would fire this guy. I do love RA reviews, and really respect then even if they disagree with my personal opinion about the single/album release but this review is so out of arguments. The comment about Love Cry was ridiculous.
As for album, in my own opinion its few months ahead of its time. Amazing stuff, and they way some songs progress and sound is purely magic. Simple yet effective as hell.
As for "the formula that's served Kieren Hebden through five previous LPs", I can see that reviewer had not listened previous Hebden work. If he did and he finds this album similar to the ones before - well that's even sadder.

But yeah this is a really great album from one the UK's most talented electronic musicians.

| #29 / Tue, 26 Jan 10 22:37 Has the reviewer ever heard 'Love Cry' out?
In plastic people it sounded amazing... (even the thievery corp drums!).
Everyone else in the place seemed to agree as well. Maybe the reviewer was just stroking his chin standing at the bar?

| #30 / Wed, 27 Jan 10 04:03 i'm surprised that no one has noticed "But sometimes the throwback-ism works really well, too, as in "Angel Eyes," an effervescent wisp of a track" ...
to be honest i have mixed feelings to love cry. i mean it's amazing, like Hyph Mngo of house. but at the same time it's boring as hell. i don't know if 'boring' is the right word. i guess what i really want to say is that it lacks something. maybe a break or something like that..

| #32 / Wed, 27 Jan 10 08:52 I think it's a pretty fair review. It's a good album but far from fantastic. It's a lot tighter and focussed than previous albums but, for me, there are only a couple of real standout memorable tracks.
All a matter of opinion though.

| #33 / Wed, 27 Jan 10 17:50 Snore....Except for his first album Dialogue, I've been continuously unimpressed by Four Tet's releases. Love Cry definitely didn't need to be 9 minutes long.
His productions are far more impressive when he's collaborating with others. The reviewer's right, the Moth/ Wolf Cub 12" was awesome. I wish he'd go make another Fridge album.

| #34 / Wed, 27 Jan 10 20:56 Actually, when I red the review for love cry ep ( why didnt that guy btw did also the album review? www.residentadvisor.net/review-view.aspx?id=6787 ) few weeks ago, i had to double check if i really skipped thru RA. this time with the album, let alone the rating - i was no doubtly reading RA. the review itself served the usual laugh outs later on - atleast: great entertainment!!

| #35 / Wed, 27 Jan 10 22:43 i gotta agree with Mark August on this one!
This album is stunning, amazing and simply mindblowing.
Love Cry as a single is one of the best dancefloor tracks to hit the shelves in quite some time! (not taking that new Ben Klock in consideration , but that's a whole different ballgame!). I found that the remixes were slightly dull, but the original is a piece of pure beauty!

As an album for actual home listening it's a winner for me.

Honestly, spare us the tripe. People come here to get an informed opinion, but lately it's been nothing but pompous bullshit, written in contradictory riddles.

| #47 / Sun, 31 Jan 10 20:32 been enjoying this album a lot, but contrary to most comments on here i agree with the reviewer in that hebden seems to have played it a bit too safe - after hearing the eclecticism of his dj sets i was hoping he might go for something really zany
