The online music store will be propped up by their competitor Juno in a deal struck late last night.

This is actually an interesting deal... I wonder what Juno got out of this. Doesn't seem like an outright acquisition...
I suppose the online dance music mp3 market is growing dramatically. Juno and Beatport seem likely to emerge as the two largest players with specialty niche retailers like Zero Inch alongside. Its becoming an interesting industry...

You are right!

but you definitely wont like to listen to wav files after you take a listen to a record played on a good hi-fi system..
..you just dont get THAT sound...

Yeah would love to know the ins and outs of the deal!If the same ethos Juno had displayed in its own sucess is applied to the rejuvination of DJDownload it could give Juno an extra nice slice of the download market.

I cannot see Beatport beaten on this one. They completely rule the Electronic download market. No-one gets close to offering the package they do. I certainly wouldn't entertain switching to Juno even though I used them in my Vinyl days.

why someone has to decide basically between juno, beatport, itunes and so on?
why not using different online distributors? just check where the tracks are the best quality for the lowest price. or where you buy straight from the artist (f.e. myx2u.com) it's always better to have a lot of shops than 2 or 3 majors.

Ups and downs...

As a user of Juno, DJ Download and Beatport I cant help but think competition in the marketplace is good for the average punter, losing one may not help us.

Download and Beatport's front end is so much better to use than Juno's, however Beatport is as mentioned above is way more expensive - Download seemed like a happy medium between the 2.

With the purchase Juno now has a decent operating site, if they can improve the content with Juno's back catalogue and and add a few "occasional sneakies" then good on them.

PS I'd love to buy more records that sound and feel better than digital but talk to my wallet, it doesn’t agree.

Juno All the way.

They are the best for Vinyl and CD which I buy unlike a lot of people these days.

They tend to get most downloads, are cheaper than beatport and I prefer the layout.

Quids In!

Well, lets make things all clear so everyone dont make mistakes on their judgements.

Beatport was like other in its genre, one of he first digital music stores on the web, and since their begin, they stablished several 'partners that brought content' to their selling selling system.

By the mid 2008, they simply and without any typeof warning or whatsoever they ended all the partnerships after having concentrated a huge slice of market into their stores and leavi9ng the partners without nothing.

Beatport since then, stablished a politic of minimum score for labels that impeled the labels into directing their music and content into the most horrible comercial shit in order to have bigger revenues as their requested.

As you can see, the only thing that concerns them is money, money, money.... the music business was completely removed and inserted a earning method that concentrates almost 60% OF THE COMPLETE sale value for each track, without considering any fee for momney transactions on internet, wich you can reach for smaller 15% of the whole sale value that goes for the artist!

The only stores that kept open doors for new and independent labels are JUNO and TRACKITDOWN. Not being suficient, Shitport noiw stablished an even higher level of revenues for labels, wich is almost impossible to reach, asking to labels to reach every quarter a minimum of 500 dolars in sales, wich for new labels is almost unreachable, most of all for newer artists, making labels to go after only for artists that represent big sales, not mattering the sound quality.

Beatport has stopped supporting upcoming artists in favour of his owners, Ritchie Hawtin, and John Acquaviva. and all those 'old school big dogs' that will never leave the top 10, as we already know those positions are all arranged to market themselfes.

Top rankings should have a more clear and transparent politics, stores should be open minded to feature GOOD MUSIC FOR REAL instead of all those electro stupidness, and all the minimal trendy sounds that now are inn, but when they get out, there will be another substitute ready to place in, and so on and so on.

By accepting the monopoly of only one store, we are accepting that our own likes and wishes to be massacrated by what 'they want you to hear', instea of playing music for what we feel touching and floor moving.

By accepting the monopoly of only one store, we are accepting the afirmation that NO ONE can bring you anymore quality music if not for the stupid beatport site.

We all know that all other sales stores haves much much better interface than beatport, but even that, most people still submit to what those monopolisers tells all the mass club comunity to do, instead of creating djs, musicians and promoters with some real culture, instead of making all what you all can see now.

The electronic scene is loosing, and is loosing each and every day with this monopoly.

We are loosing good talented artists, we are loosing high quality agregative labels, and most of all and in my view the most important loss:

WE ARE LOOSING PUBLIC. WE ARE LOOSING MUSIC. WE ARE LOOSING THE CLUBS.

Hip-Hop artists are taking over our clubs with apologies to drugs, to indiscriminated sex, to violence and loss of freedom.

Minimal artists are taking over our culture with a sound that is a NO-Sound audio, no harmonies, no melodies. Now everyone nowadays can buy a sample pack, buy ableton and start making their own noise, get featured on Rihcie Hawtin 'NO-MUSIC MINIMAL'label and get milionaire, while the true electronic musicians, who mke the sweetest melodies, the best audio engineers, with their best audio dynamicas and harmonies go simply to he forget place.

We are living a moment where either we take a part of it and start back suporting true artists and those who fomment the true electronic music, or we will be hearing the most idiot and non sense noises in one or two years, and i must say, that coming to that, i will myself stop making music, making culture and simply move on into another kind of life.

Those are time of culture massacration, and it is up to us to choose wich side we will be on: If will be on the monopolysers side with their non-music culture spread, or into the side of those who really believe that there always more good music to come than the simplicity and non sense audio (this cant be called music) they are spreading.

Yeahh... big deal... but thats whats happening nowadays and nobody see that. Its right up on everyones faces and still this, we make ourselfes as blinds.

Long life to no-music culture.
cheers to the dumbs.

Beatport - Still owe money to BPI, PRS and MCPS for the years they were operating in this country without being paid up members. On principle I have boycotted them for this reason. This is where DJ downloads did the right thing and paid up from the start increasing there costs (8% - of every track sold to the collection societies).

Of all three : DJ downloads, Juno and Beatport I find the User experience the best on DJ Downloads, Worst on Juno and average on Beatport.

Juno have go more exclusives though but they are poorly marketed and no-one really hears about them.

We need to back British people -(although Justin @ DJ Downloads is a Saffa) - vote with you credit crunch wonga and support Dave + Co @ Juno, not Jonas @ Beatport and his uninspiring attempts to showcase new talent and new labels.

That is all for now

Right now Beatport are said to sell around 70% of all dance music. That is quite a huge share of the pie. It explains why almost every label is obsessed with getting in with them. But I dont think that is going to last for many reasons. The industry needs a few big stores and a few smaller niche ones, just like it was with all the vinyl distros. There are far to much just now. The general idea that a labels music has to be on every possible download store is a false economy. What the industry doesnt need though is another Beatport. There is certainly a corporate vibe with the company and actually getting to speak to someone is incredibly difficult. It can be a real turn off. There are a lot of labels going to wake up soon and stop expending large amount of time and energy trying to get beatport staffs attention. I understand they are busy and short staffed but they must surely realise the current operating methods they use cant be tolerated indefinitely. They dont want to speak to labels directly, they seem to only want to speak to content distributors. Its much easier to say no to them than it is to a label. Content distributors are sandwich making factories. Its al a numbers game to them. The only people who can really speak for a label and its artists is someone from the label. Im sure you can imagine how frustrating some things can be in the industry just now

Vinyl is great but its pretty much dead. There will always be a few labels doing it purely for promotion and a few buyers who love it. Nothing wrong with that of course but its just not a feasible medium these days for the majority of labels who make a pittance from sales in general.

Interesting:

Does Hawtin really have a share in Beatport? It would explain his OTT heavy exposure on their sites even when he has no releases out.

I heard the co owner is Bad Boy Bill. In fact Im certain thats who it is but its kept very hush hush. He and his partner then sold a share to Native Instruments. hawtin many have something in there but Ive never heard of that before. Then again I have noticed Beatport have championed minimal stuff which always seemed strange to me because its not a seller really compared to their bigeee Electro House and Trance. The Hawtin connection could explain that. Nothing surprises me in this game these days.

Enjoyed your post anyway.

In response to beatport being viewed as corporate scum...

All things being equal, I believe it's a matter of timing mixed with recognizable names on an artist roster to your foot in the door.

Let's face facts my label project wouldn't have gotten off the ground if I signed DJ Smithers - Pumping Bass Jam (Dub Version), Ben Tramp feat. Sassy Fox - Exxxtasy (Original Mix), George Washinton Jr. - United (Bedroom DJ Unreleased Mix), KoolMoDITTLES - Minimal In Yo' Face backed with killer B side Minimal All Nite Long....nor should yours.

Someone mentioned Juno and Trackitdown are the only ones accepting new indie labels in dance?

Must have missed the boat as I was one of many labels asked by trackitdown to find a good digital distributor or "middle man." This has become a standard line.

I think shops like trackitdown or beatport practicing quality control are fine. Keeping uninspired yet enthusiastic labels away....case and point quickly "Mastering by professionals is a sales criterion folks." not an added extra that if you avoid it saved money or something silly along those lines, no master means maybe you uploaded the content but it didn't sell based on the recording, which is the merchandise as opposed to it wasn't popular or good enough.

Not to change the subject entirely, but I can't stand a middle man distributor system with no physical wharehouse of inventory, no tangible service to offer besides getting you inside the now closed doors or digital retailers.

I ask, which is it shops? Are you open for business or are you no longer accepting new labels (other than the ones that are "middle man" approved?

Word is bond.

I would like to add, Stompy.com supports Music Forward Artist and Labels. We don't only go for the big$ people. We are a more specific in our Aural Vision but if you are into what we got you will find a nice service for getting it.
