 | RA Review Chanted in the stoned-out haze of a sunny So-Cal afternoon, Steven Ellison, AKA Flying Lotus, conjured a vision of Los Angeles two years ago that was both sci-fi and the real thing at the same time. Clearly, Los Angeles was already cosmic. Which is why I don't even know what to call Cosmogramma ...

| #18 / Fri, 07 May 10 18:50 During the 19th century, parisians used the word un cosmogramme to describe a device that allowed them to see exotic landscapes and backlit city scenes through glasses. I feel that's exactly what this album is.

Thing is, I've had that feeling with most of his releases, yet somehow the sum of all of this album's parts in a particular really touch me in a way that previous FL works hadn't gotten to me. Listening to this album I'm nostalgic....for people & places (and other music) that I can't quite put my finger on, and I almost want it to stay that way. And that's what I love so much...this album points me back to my love of music in general, regardless of the genre.

| #25 / Sat, 08 May 10 10:23 Like with his previous album, it took me a few listens to get into this, but now that I have, I can safely say that the review and subsequent praise for this is spot on.

| #27 / Sat, 08 May 10 16:39 superb album. he pays so huge attention to small details, which is magnificent when you blend all that together. Something I only noticed so far on few albums, maybe last time on trentemoller's debut

| #34 / Tue, 11 May 10 04:42 On my first run through this is not nice at all. Far too much time spent in audio editors for my liking. Where is the melody? where is something cohesive for the ear to grab and run with? Give me the brilliance of the new Black Dog anyday over this dribble.

| #36 / Tue, 11 May 10 08:21 Messy upon first listen!? Can't believe I read that. Big ups FlyLo; this is a record that will go down as an instant classic. So many genre influences nestled within and yet it comes to us screaming from the future. Not a bar hasn't be laboured over, and still it sounds natural and effortless. Like the music itself was always here, we just couldn't hear it. ...Overkill? But I mean it.

| #37 / Tue, 11 May 10 08:54 Oh, fantastic album. It reminds me of that gentle chaos that flowed in the first Amerykah and the latest IG Culture album, though it's also similar to the previous Flying Lotus album. But there's a sense of freedom and creativity here that I appreciate a lot. Well, I confess: those drum n bass patterns that arise from then to then and those domu-like keyboards that appear suddenly are quite my thing. Love.

Flying Lotus is a portal.

| #42 / Tue, 11 May 10 22:59 Do the Astral Plane is a beauty! all the relatively lengthy tracks here are absolutely genius. that's not to say that the 1-2 minute ones are not, I just wanted more of them. in love with this release, and with the Flying Lotus.. Forward thinking and beautiful in every aspect!

| #47 / Wed, 12 May 10 20:51 I dunno. This album while brilliant is a little too all over the place and the tracks all end as I'm just getting into the groove. It's like Flying Lotus came down with a bad case of ADHD after Los Angeles. It's brilliant stuff, but I just wish there was a bit more meat on each track is all I'm saying. Its as if he collected a bunch of excerpts of longer works. Like I'm on a cruise ship and I get an hour and can only see one or two sites in each of 17 destinations. I'd rather visit one or two places and take my time exploring lots of sights in each so I get a holistic feel for the city. Each track by itself is great but if FL had just lingered longer on each of them or given a sense of progression to them more, it could have made for a sumptuous meal instead of a series of amuse bouches that only leave you wondering what each dish would have tasted like if you'd had a whole plate of it instead of half a spoonful.

Might take you a longer while to realise I wasn't joking. You can take your elitism elsewhere please. I was merely stating that SOME OF US (ffs) will find an album of production tricks - even really fucking good ones - will eventually become tiresome.
But clearly you're a Flylo fanboy and a dissenting opinion of any sort isn't allowed, right? Must remember this is a music forum...
