Steffi feat. Elif Biçer - Kill Me cover
RA Review
As one of Panorama Bar's most talented resident DJs, it seemed only a matter of time before Steffi stepped into the limelight as a producer. She made her debut with"24 Hours," a simple and classy deep house track she threw together in one night for Tama Sumo's Panorama Bar 02 compilation. On "Kill..

I could not disagree with you more, Will, about the vocal mix. I personally find her vocal incredibly compelling. She's not trying to be some big tough diva, she's a woman who has been treated like shit and would rather be killed than have to endure being with the other person. That's strong resignation, a sentiment she sings quite well. And her vocals fit so well inside the beat, possibly even better than any of her moments on the two albums you mentioned. I can see the attraction of the other mixes, but calling it 'wide of the mark' makes it sound like what she's done is completely incompatible with the beat. And that's far from the truth.

although i love elif, i have to agree with the review here.. the vocals just don't seem to fit the track. techno, though? not really.

Love this 12". The dub mix is amazing. I actually quite like the vocal mix though I can see how people would find it cheesey. But personally I like it. Dub mix really is spectacular though. Shall purchase in the non-too-distant...

i thought the vocals sound pretty good - work well with the music (even if not lyrics) and that's what matters most.

Very disappointed. It's not what I like from Ostgut.

What do you mean? Cos it's not following the harder Berghain sound? Fits pretty well into Panoramabar though, if you ask me.

You're right! Ostgut wants to promote music from the residents of the whole club (Berghain AND Panorama Bar). And this record is pure Panorama Bar sound. Personally I love Ostgut for this variety in their releases. Harder stuff, dub, house but always with a connection to the club.

I get what you mean, but a lot of the previous Ostgut stuff was pure Berghain (recently the PAS remixes, Deuce, Fengler).. they keep their output pretty evenly balanced between the sound of both spaces, which is good. I don't think a lot of the 12" really combine both Berghain and Pbar though, apart from Rainbow/ Mekong Delta of course.

I prefer the harder sound myself, but you have to keep everyone happy. Can't wait for the remix package of the forthcoming Dettmann album.

If it didn't fit panorama bar, would it mean it's shit? hahaha

dub mix is outstanding...meh on the vocal mix.

All the mixes are great, each of the 3 can fit into entirely different points in the night. Very well catered to any DJ's style. Kudos to Steffi, with this and 24 Hours she's killing it.

Exactly ! I prefer their harder sound (Ben Klock's One LP or the Len Faki's track, that is HUGE)
A sound more like sandwell district

Sorry I've never gone to Berghain

I was (am) really, really looking forward to this release, but let me tell you something: I always had a huge problem with singers whose accent sounds half-way 'germanic'. Couldn't stand it on the 'Serenity' LP, couldn't stand it on various other Ostgut EPs ... either don't do it at all, or go absolutely Python-bonkers like M. Mayer on 'Love is stronger ...'.
Having said that, I can't agree with the verdict on the vocal version. This is on 12' I'm gonna wear out on both sides within weeks, and hopefully this will take all involved artists one step further! Lovely sounds, lovely beats, just pure spring-time happiness!

This shit is hot! I got 2 copies and I mix all three mixes together...not to many happy tracks or songs coming out right now...and even though in the song she's tired of her man or woman :)...the music is happy and up beat...
The records hot...the ladies are hot...and it works very well on the dance floor....BAMHeadphones

No amount of editing would have made this vocal sound good. I don't think it's a matter of her voice fitting this style of beats. It's more a matter of Steffi not being a proper-singer. There are a few cringe-worthy moments during the 'original mix'.

Tracks like these make our music sound 'amateurish' to outsiders.

erm, the vocals are actually by elif bicer, who is a proper singer.

Elif Bicer, my bad, had it reversed in my head...doesn't mean the vocal sounds good all of the sudden?

I am confused by the responses here. Are we musicians or not? Iit is the true mark of a musician to tackle a timeless theme such as love lost and then- to deliver pop structure in a house format, with elegance for the dancefloor, well, I mean, actually I have tried to do this over and over with my own music and it is one of the most difficult. Listen to Pet Sounds by beach boys or the self titled Velvet Underground LP. This stuff is so cognitive and perfect, and these are examples of what our generation also need to include in their compositional palette. Not always in this style, but the endeavor must be applauded each and every-time, for our legacy as musicians and also for the sheer tenacity of execution. Lastly,-C'mon, think of the queens in the Panaroma losing it to this track. Perfect, and probably couldn't GET more "Ostgut."
The reason we must work with pop endeavors and not be so "underground" or "dark" all the damn time is because we are musicians first and foremost. We perform the standards which have existed for hundreds of years because we are part of a discipline and legacy, and you don't disregard the past simply to favor the future. This is the vocalist who supplied "OK" by the Klockman. I found her vision on this release to be really stunning and the delivery was equally impressive. Actually I was smiling from ear to ear as the lyrics unfolded before me the first time.. Nice work!

So what about Jovonn? Is that "wrong" as well? Just listen to "I cant make up my mind".. sometimes beauty comes from NOT sounding perfect.

great ep and congrats to both steffi and elif .
the vocal cut is excellent too . great tone from elif and thank god she is not sounding like 'other tough or whatever other singers ' , but rather like herself . a great unique voice . electronic music needs to evolve fro these parameters that people seem to set . thanx to people like steffi and elif who are willing to take the risk and do something different from what is expected .

it's a nice production but not my thing basically. I wonder if this would get the same amount of ooh's and aah's if this was on another label. Doubt it.

I am curious about some of RA's ratings of late, and this review / rating highlights my question. How does a review containing, 'Unfortunately, it ends up sinking the EP's first A-side track.' end up with 4 stars? Are the ratings scored independently from the reviews?

FYI, ratings are typically chosen by the reviewer. This review was kind of a special case, because as much as I wasn't feeling the vocal mix, the other two tracks are too excellent for this EP to get anything less than a 4. So to answer your question, the rating often represents the reviewer's overall opinion of the release, rather than an average of each track's individual rating.

I vote boring, like a lot of the stuff Ostgut is pumping out these days. How about releasing tracks like that T++ monster from Berghain 02?

And yeah, it definitely seems like RA has a pretty skewed rating scale. Like they get money from the links below to buy the record . . .

the (Crushed Soul Mix) is decent - vocals in the original not so much. 4/5 rather questionable
