Carl Craig deserves better than the Sullivan Room.

That's really not nice. Sullivan Room has been our home for six years....that's pretty rare these days. And we're very proud to have Carl come and play at our party for our anniversary. The people that come out to our parties are very music oriented and kind individuals who always make a contribution to the vibe and atmosphere of our events.

So please stay positive, as this is our anniversary and a happy occasion...not an opportunity for misanthropy :)

I myself am so fucking ecstatic to C2 come and play at Basic NYC, and we're always focused on bringing out the best.....so hellz fucking yeahhh!!!!!! DJ

Congratulations on your anniversary. You have brought in many great DJs over the years at a venue that supports your efforts. But at the same time, a lot of underground heads, including myself, just don't like the place. Personally I think that place needs to be gutted and renovated from scratch to be more "dance friendly." At the same time, I'm sure this going to be an amazing party and the people who could deal with that place will have a great time.

Congratulations and good luck.

Well we've been at Sullivan Room since it was a very small room...then people said they didn't like it because it wasn't big enough. So then they renovated it and added more space, which allowed us to expand our bookings and get a different caliber of DJs in there. There are now plans in place to rearrange the layout to make it more "dance friendly" so hopefully that will add another dimension to what we are all doing.

Thanks for the nice words though, I wish venues could be everything for everyone...unfortunately they're not. Of course I love the place and we've been happy to work with the room in being able to host some amazing nights there. I know plenty of underground heads who have a great time there as well though...since we book everything from techno to deep house, you can imagine we get a big mix of people out, and that's one of the things that I enjoy most about our party - the diversity you'll see there. We're friendly at the door, there's great music, and everyone is welcome. So hopefully you'll make it out and hear Carl do his thing!

Cheers Slayer

Dude, couldn't agree more. And, sorry to the Sleepy or Boo who said "Thats not nice." She's right, its not nice, but its totally true.

Yes, you guys book good DJ's, but Sullivan Room blows goats. The sound system is really not up to snuff, and thats by far the most important thing. And the people who go there are far from music oriented. I'd say half the peeps there just want to go somewhere with a "club vibe" on a weekend night.

Can someone start booking shows at Love again?

Club Love has a nice space and the sound system is the best in New York but its management is too much to deal with. While the Sullivan Room's management allows the promoters to do their thing and are very open to dance music which is why so many promoters use that space for parties even though the space isn't ideal for dance music events.

You know what would be ideal in NYC if there was a club with the layout and sound system of Club Love with the management of the Sullivan Room. Now that's a club I would support.

Sorry, if you don't like a place, you don't like it. But I'm not going to argue with you (EDIT: OK maybe I will a little if you don't mind hehehe) Six years of parties is enough of a record of accomplishment and speaks for itself.

This past Saturday with Mark Farina for example was absolutely on fire. The place alwyas has a great vibe, the DJs love playing there, we have a great relationship with all the out of town DJs who have played for us and we're very excited about our anniversary night. If you're saying the club "blows goats", you're insulting the intelligence of a huge range of international DJs who know a thing or two about what they're doing. As well as our crew that comes out there every weekend to get down and support good music.

In all honesty, what recent nights have you been to the club to make such a definitive judgment?

And the fact of the matter is...there are not that many legit venues that support underground music left in NYC. Those that do should be treated with some degree of respect by anyone who cares an iota about this music and culture. That's why I love all the clubs that represent this kind of music.

So yes...it's not nice to poop on someone's anniversary party. It's a time to celebrate, and that's what I'm going to be focusing on :)

That is so true...but we have what we have, and need to make the most out of what we have. That's our goal, and we respect everyone who is making things happen in this city for this music.

It's about the music.

And by the way, Carl Craig came and scoped the place out in person...so I think he's pretty good at making decisions about which places he should be playing at or not.

Sleepy & Boo http://www.basicnyc.com
I have never seen Carl DJ but I used to see him perform live in Detroit quite often in the 90s... I am so excited for this, the man is one of my heros and he's made quite a few of my top ten favorite records. From dance floor killers to jazz type stuff he is quite talented.

Maybe it's just the events I go to but I find that the crowd at Sullivan Room is there for the music, Mark Farina this weekend was a perfect example. The entire crowd was into the music, everyone had a great time, it was an awesome vibe.

As for Love's sound system everyone keeps raving about it but last time I was there it didn't sound so great. Maybe they were pushing it too hard but it was too loud and was distorting. It may have been the DJ but any decent sound guy should have caught that. Someone also told me I was standing in the part of the room with the worst sound... But still...

I personally think Cielo has the best sound system in the city, too bad it's a crappy club.

Regardless I am psyched for Carl Craig and based on my experience with Sullivan Room (only going for the DJs I want to hear) I think it's a great place for him to play.

Anyone bad mouthing the sound system at SR is obviously just starting the rumor mill and spreading lies. They have a core audio, crystal clear, and well balanced system. As a DJ, the monitors were even perfect, and it's the only club where I don't where ear plugs because unlike many other clubs that leave my ears ringing through the next day, SR has always been on point with its sound. Haters will always hate, but the truth cannot be argued with.

I love Sully and the staff and everyone who comes there and has a good time. Anybody who says the crowd isn't "music oriented" is being a snob and doesn't have their facts straight.

Mr Intensity & CootsMalone need to spend more time at Pacha I guess...

SR blows?
People come to SR just for club experience?
People come to SR are not "music oriented"

thats comical :D

Maybe just open your own club so you can continue hating on venues like SR who have more talent (Underground & Superstar DJ's/Artists) coming thru its doors than all the clubs in NYC put together - just look at the line up for April and May - nuff said

Sleepy & Boo, just keep doing your thing Slayer

Speaking for myself, almost every time I go to the Sullivan Room I leave wanting to punch someone in the face. I don't like feeling that way leaving a club so I don't go there. Not everyone feels that way about the place but I do. While I won't rule out not going there again, considering that Carl Craig will likely play again in NYC some time this year, it's not worth it for me to go to the Sullivan Room to hear him.

Hahaha...sounds like you've got more issues with anger management than the Sullivan Room.

I mean...we don't want people getting punched out on the dancefloor. Cool? DJ

Wow, what an energy on this thread!  I mean everyone's entitled to an opinion, and I will of course inject mine, but I think it's tacky to come in and talk down the venue on the promoter's invite...and for their anniversary party no less!!

I am not going to say that Sullivan Room is the perfect venue, but neither is any club in existence.   Love, with its piercing blacklights, was mentioned...so was Cielo, with its unforgiving door, sometimes violating pat-downs, and expensive drinks.  If you name a venue, someone somewhere will have a complaint no matter what.

I've been a patron of Sullivan Room for several years now, and I will continue to be one.  The sound system (arguably one of the best, pound for pound, in NYC) just keeps improving; the aesthetics (like lighting and upgraded bathrooms) keep improving.  And one constant of the place evident even before the major upgrade is the stellar service from the staff.  The doormen, bouncers, bartenders, waitresses, bathroom atendants, and even the owner himself all have a very friendly, welcoming attitude about themselves, that allows people to relax enough to overlook any shortcomings, and thus have a better time out.

Sleepy and Boo obviously know all of this, which is why they continue to operate from there.  DJs themselves have heralded the place as a diamond in the rough in the city, due to a patron populace who don't go there for all the distractimg bells and whistles...but for the quality music and dancing.

I am totally looking forward to helping them celebrate 6 years of doing their thing.  Can't wait!!

Sullivan is one of the last great house music and techno institutions around. It brings in great DJs from all around the world and from the local scene. No door drama and the B&T crowd didn’t seem to invade it yet. If you want to hear amazing music and dance check it out on a Saturday night for the Basic NYC parties.

In a few days Satoshi Tomie will be playing at Sullivan Room can’t wait. Last time Satoshi played he destroyed the place. To top that off he is starting a residency there slick move by Sleepy and Boo. Always a good thing to see top notch talent coming into the city on a regular basis. This Saturday is going to be packed.
