Details of a South African showcase at this year's Weather Festival in Paris have been revealed.
The afterhours event will serve as a 10th birthday celebration for Parisian club Djoon, which has long been bringing South African DJs to Europe. South African All Stars will kick off at 7 AM on Sunday, May 19th, at Port De La Rapée, the home of Weather festival organisers Concrete. Revered South African DJ Black Coffee—who featured prominently in our recent Real Scenes: Johannesburg documentary—will perform, as will fellow countrymen Culoe De Song and Da Capo. Body & Soul man Joe Claussell has been billed as the party's special guest, while other stages at the event will showcase a mix of local and international house talent, with Kerri Chandler, Theo Parrish and Floorplan, AKA Robert Hood, among those confirmed. Tickets for the 2013 Weather festival are available here on RA. ![]() Marvellous Island, a new Parisian electronic music festival, will make its debut this May. In the promoters' eyes, Paris was a major European capital lacking a major European electronic music festival. The text accompanying the festival announcement explains large-scale French festivals are usually held outside of Paris, and electronic music is often not the focus. "We strongly believe Paris also deserves [its] first festival at the edge of the evolution of this type of music," they write, and the lineup they've assembled certainly reflects a desire to stand toe-to-toe with the biggest events on the continent. The festival—to be held over five days at Le Chalet de la Porte Jaune, on actual island just outside Paris' city centre—is organized into a series of showcases from some of the biggest names on the circuit. A Crosstown Rebels "Rebel Rave Tour" stage featuring Art Department, Subb-an and label head Damian Lazarus heads up the first day, along with a Get Physical vs. Flying Circus stage headlined by M.A.N.D.Y. and a Guy Gerber live set. Highlights of the following days include a Hot Creations stage featuring Jamie Jones, a "Loco Dice & Friends" showcase with the man himself playing an extended set, Davide Squillace and Cassy playing for Circoloco and Pan-Pot heading up a lineup of Mobilee artists. Seth Troxler, dOP, Jacques Greene, Anthony Collins and Dan Ghenacia will also feature. Tickets for the festival are available here on RA. ![]() George Issakidis will release his debut solo album, Karezza, on Kill The DJ in May. Issakidis has been releasing music for more than 15 years, both solo and as a regular collaborator with Speedy J and one half of The Micronauts duo with Christophe Monier. Issakidis's forthcoming album will be the first time he's committed music to wax for Kill The DJ, the imprint founded by Parisian veterans Chloe and Ivan Smagghe. Karezza sees him stretch out across nine tracks, and features collaborations with Perc and Ed Banger regular Mickey Moonlight. A short-lived alias that arrived in 1997, the original Point G 12-inches remain elusive and expensive collector's items (although "Underwater," the lead track off 1998's On the Raw Again EP, was recently reissued by Apollonia, while Real Tone put out an unreleased version of 1997 cut "Chicken Coma" last year). A precursor to DJ Gregory, the Point G material is characterised by a simple, stripped back approach to deep house. Point G Records will initially act as a conduit for new solo material produced as Point G, though there is word of older tracks coming out further down the line. It will operate a vinyl-only policy and the first release will be a three-track EP simply called #1. The producer will also unveil his new live show at in Paris on May 17th as part of the first Weather festival. Tracklist 01. Indian 02. Come 03. Dim Point G will release #1 on April 1st, 2013. ![]() The lineup has been announced for this year's Nuit Sonores festival, taking place from May 7th through the 12th.
As in years past, Nuits Sonroes will take over various venues around Lyon, France's second-largest city. The bill so far includes a diverse cast of international acts, from big names such as Carl Cox and Seth Troxler to more underground techno artists like Ben Klock, DVS1, Shifted and Recondite. A raft of French artists have been confirmed as well, including Laurent Garnier, Le K, Ark and Vitalic. To get a feel for the atmosphere at Nuits Sonores, have a look at our In Pictures feature on last year's festival. ![]() Joakim and Kindness will tour their Everyone project, with dates planned across Europe, South America and the US. UK newcomer Adam Bainbridge and Tigersushi boss Joakim Bouaziz's collaboration was born out of an afternoon "playing with synths," according to a SPIN interview. They inaugurated Joakim's Crowdspacer imprint last month with the "No Time To Waste" single, a laid-back disco cut befitting of the two artists' history (also featuring an undercover contribution from Jam City). The duo will now tour together, and their first two dates will bring them to Paris's Wanderlust and Portugal's Zero Club on February 22nd and 23rd. The next week, on March 2nd, they land in London for a show at Corsica Studios, and then they fly to the US to play a Living Room Sessions gig at Miami's Bardot on March 7th. Their one South American date takes them to Bogota's P6 on March 9th, and then they head back to the US for three final parties in San Francisco, LA, and Seattle, finishing up on the 15th. The vocal version of the "No Time To Waste" single is currently up for streaming at Crowdspacer's SoundCloud page. You can also listen to the recent RA Exchange with Joakim here. Franck Roger will release Extensions of Yesterday on April 22nd. Roger is perhaps best known for running his Real Tone label, which has been dealing in traditionalist-leaning house for almost a decade. He's a prolific producer himself, releasing well over 50 EPs since 2001, as well as an album. His second full-length will come via French imprint Circus Company: as the title implies, there is a focus on the retro-obsessed sounds of his Real Tone output, although several tracks also showcase a deeper and dubbier side of his palette. Brooklyn native Mandel Turner makes a vocal turn on "Sands of Time," just as he has done on many of Roger's recent singles. The LP will be the Frenchman's third release on Circus Company, following two EPs in 2012. Tracklist 01. I Want You 02. Calixto 03. Gossando 04. Feel It 05. Sands of Time feat. Mandel Turner 06. Established techno producers including Shifted, Ancient Methods and Semantica chief Svreca will all appear on the compilation, which is being released in conjunction with Monograph, a new publication focused on electronic music (The Black Ideal will be released at the same time as the journal's first issue). Unknown Precept says the sound of the compilation is "halfway between incisive primitivist rave-techno and cerebral experimentation." The Black Ideal will be released on double 12-inch and digital formats, and will also feature previously unreleased material from Paris-based producer Mondkopf (in collaboration with Saåad), Polar Inertia, Casual Violence, AnD, and the Violetshaped duo, AKA Shapednoise and Violet Poison, who will release their debut album next month. The Weimar-based label has quietly released inventive house and techno from the likes of Vril, Prince of Denmark, Matthias Reiling and Kettenkarussell since it launched in 2009. Though a small operation, the imprint is well-known for its visual aesthetic, re-appropriating and hand-stamping old record covers to adorn their releases. The Giegling party at La Villette Enchantée will feature most of the collective's core artists, including DJ sets from Ateq and DJ Dustin. Vril, Prince Of Denmark and Kettenkarussel will all perform live, while Radiant Child's resident Audub will open up the evening. For an idea of the Giegling style, check out this recent mix from Prince Of Denmark for Little White Earbuds. ![]() Viewing 11 - 20 of 153 news articles
