Polish festival Unsound has revealed first details of its 2013 edition, which will take place October 13th through 20th in Krakow.

The annual event is renowned for its adventurous and experimental lineups, which generally include a range of specially commissioned collaborations, live shows and other projects. This year sees Robert Henke, AKA Monolake, present his Lumiere live show for the first time, while Polish artist Stefan Wesolowski will launch his Liebestod album. There are also several Polish premieres, with Earth, Karenn, seminal dub techno outfit Porter Ricks, Tropic Of Cancer, Pharmakon and Golden Pudel resident Helena Hauff all performing in the country for the first time. Footwork artist RP Boo will make his European debut.

Other acts announced include DJ Qu, Fire!, King Midas Sound and Stellar OM Source, who recently spoke to RA about her album for RVNG. Organisers say more names will be added to the bill in the coming weeks and months.

Each year the festival has a theme, and in 2013 it will be Interference. As the organisers explain: "This relates to the physics of sound, including the overlay of varied sound waves and rhythms, distortion, disrupted audio, sonic disturbance, and the act of obstructing or impeding. More than ever before, these elements are used in a wide range of contemporary music, from the developing noise scene to ever-evolving club music."

Though Unsound's home remains in Poland, it is continuing to expand: earlier this year it held events in Adelaide, Australia, and there's also a London showcase planned for later in 2013.

OFF Festival will take place this year in Katowice, Poland, from August 2nd through 4th.

The weekender will return to its home in Katowice's Dolina Trzech Stawów, described in a press release as "a beautiful green oasis in the heart of industrial Silesia." The lineup encompasses everything from indie rock to experimental to electronic music, with an emphasis on live performance.

The manic basslines of UK artist Shackleton are among the electronic highlights, along with Tri Angle's The Haxan Cloak, Permanent Vacation's John Talabot, Laurel Halo and RVNG affiliated duo Blondes. More experimental acts have their place, like drone heads Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore, Fatima Al Qadiri and metal supergroup KTL. And there are the big names as well—The Smashing Pumpkins, Solange, My Bloody Valentine and Deerhunter have all been billed.

Tauron Nowa Muzyka 2013 will take place from August 22nd through 25th.

Now a summer tradition in Katowice, the festival was originally started back in 2006 with an aim to bring cutting-edge electronic music to the Polish city. Tauron's eighth edition will transform the city's now-abandoned coal mine, in a former industrial area now used mainly for artistic and musical activities, as well as the new Silesian Museum Grounds.

The latest addition to the festival's 2013 lineup includes a Kompakt showcase celebrating the label's 20th anniversary. Representing the Cologne mainstay are Sid LeRock, Matias Aguayo (performing with his full band) and new signing COMA. Canadian breakcore weirdo Venetian Snares is also billed, along with Spanish duo ZA! These artists join the initial names announced earlier this year, which include LFO, Skream, Moderat, JETS, DJ Koze and plenty more.

Kenji Takimi has a string of dates lined up in Europe this month.

A multi-decade veteran of Japan's house and disco scenes, Takimi wears a number of different hats in his home country: he regularly DJs alongside international talent like DJ Harvey and Theo Parrish, produces under a multitude of monikers, remixes artists from Cornelius to Cut/Copy and runs Crue-L Records. Championed by Tim Sweeney (his 2010 mix for Beats in Space topped that year's list of his most-listened-to shows) and now beginning to travel more internationally, Takimi's profile has been growing beyond Japan of late.

Takimi will spend the next two weeks playing across Poland and Italy, with a few nights in Berlin closing out the tour. The trek begins at Basen in Warsaw this Friday, and he'll head south to Czestochowa for an appearance at the Rura Club the next night. On Friday, November 9th, Takimi will be at Mantova, Italy's Moxa club, and on Saturday, he'll be in Pescara to play at Tipografia. Berlin's Soju Bar will host him on Wednesday the 14th, and ://about blank has him booked for Friday the 16th fir their Japanese-centric edition of Homopatik. Details of a gig on Saturday the 17th have yet to be confirmed.

Local News  Wed, 18 Jul 2012  /  2 Comments
Poland's Tauron Nowa Musyka festival has added a hefty batch of acts to its lineup.

The August event, now in its sixth year, has a particular focus on innovation within the realms of electronic music and jazz. In addition to the initial lineup—which included Scuba, Rustie, and Sepalcure—they've since announced a host of names that range from crossover stars and indie rock bands to dance-leaning acts.

Some of the bigger names included are UK group Hot Chip, Detroit-hailing Hotflush signee Jimmy Edgar, Kompakt boss Michael Mayer and his labelmate The Field, bleep techno and IDM veterans The Black Dog, Stroboscopic Artefacts founder Lucy, and Barcelona-based disco auteur John Talabot.

On the more bass-oriented end of the spectrum, Fade to Mind associates Nguzunguzu will play along with Brainfeeder's Lapalux, TNGHT (the new collaborative project between Lunice and Hudson Mohawke), Warp's Eskmo, and Chicago footwork duo DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn. Resurgent IDM act Mouse On Mars will also play, as well as a special back-to-back DJ set from Caribou and Four Tet. Band-wise, sets are confirmened from Baltimore dream-pop duo Beach House and noise-drone band Fuck Buttons, plus an opening performance by Chilly Gonzales with the Aukso Chamber Orchestra at the Szyb Wilson Gallery.

Tauron Nowa Musyka announces second wave of acts

International News  Mon, 11 Jun 2012  /  13 Comments
The first names have been announced for the 2012 Unsound Festival in Poland.

Staying true to form, Unsound has chosen a decidedly dark motif for this year's program: The End, a theme that's meant to capture "the current mixture of feelings around us... the apocalyptic atmosphere and opposing sense of potential rebirth." 2012 marks the avant-garde festival's 10th anniversary, and to mark the occasion they're revisiting some of the artists that have played for them before, both in Krakow and New York. Lustmord and Biosphere will play live together as part of the ongoing Trinity series, which explores the early nuclear weapons tests in New Mexico through field recordings gathered by the duo at the test sites. Tim Hecker and Oneohtrix Point Never will play live together too, debuting material from their upcoming album on Danial Lopatin's Software Records.

One of this year's debut performances will come from aTelecine, a dark ambient group that's porn star Sasha Grey's first musical project. Leyland Kirby, AKA The Caretaker, will deliver a rare performance as V/VM, his channel for twisted pop covers. Hotly tipped ambient pop artist Julia Holter will play her first set in Poland with members of the Sinfonietta Cracovia.

The seven-day festival begins on October 14th. Many more artists will be announced in the months ahead.

Unsound 2012 reveals initial lineup

International News  Thu, 19 Apr 2012  /  13 Comments
Audioriver have begun announcing names for their 2012 event, taking place at the end of July in Poland.

The annual electronic music festival will take place at its usual home: a beach along the Vistula River, just outside the city of Plock. Luciano is this year's big headliner, next to Norway's Royksopp and dubstep/hardcore fusion outfit Enter Shikari. The rest of the bill so far presents a diverse array of electronic sounds: pummeling techno from Tommy Four Seven, drum & bass from Black Sun Empire, French electro house from SebastiAn, avant-garde glitch from Raster-Noton artist Byetone and minimal house from Alex Picone. dOP will present their new project, Les Fils Du Calvaire, which shows them working with a more traditional band set-up (drums, guitar, etc.) More acts will be announced over the next few months.

UMF Worldwide, a new brand stemming from Miami's Ultra Music Festival, has announced plans for events across the globe in 2012.

Ultra Music Festival began as a one-day event in 1999, and is by now one of the world's biggest electronic music festivals. The annual events in Miami book many of the industry's biggest names and typically sell out months in advance, with crowds of 150,000 or more.

International offshoots of Ultra are nothing new—UMF Brasil and UMF Ibiza have been happening for years—but UMF Worldwide will bring "the UMF experience" to numerous countries for the first time. The event will make its Argentinian debut on May 5th in Buenos Aires, then move onto Poland for two days in July. UMF Korea, the festival's first edition in Asia, will take place in Seoul on August 4th. UMF Brasil will happen sometime in late 2012, and two festivals in Ibiza will book-end the summer clubbing season on May 27th and October 7th.

Aside from next month's festival in Miami, UMF Poland is the only event that has confirmed any artists as of yet. Those are Tiesto, Aviici and Carl Cox, who will be hosting a Carl Cox and Friends Arena as one of the festival's six stages.
