Tim Hecker imagines a country

Canadian ambient producer Tim Hecker will dream up his usual vistas of sound later this year when he releases his first proper full-length on Kranky in more than two years.

An Imaginary Country is the name, and as anyone familiar with his past work can guess, abstract masses of sound is the game. Many of the tracks on the record reference water and its perhaps one of the best ways to think about these slow-moving tunes that seem to wash over the listener. Hecker had a relatively quiet 2008, with only a collaboration with Aidan Baker on Alien8 to show for his recorded efforts. We expect that much of the year was spent holed up recording An Imaginary Country and, upon first listen, we'd like to tell you that it was worth the wait. But, objectivity unfortunately doesn't allow us to do so. Luckily, the wait will be a short one, as it's due out in February.

Tracklist
01. 100 Years Ago
02. Sea of Pulses
03. The Inner Shore
04. Pond Life
05. Borderlands
06. A Stop at the Chord Cascades
07. Utropics
08. Paragon Point
09. Her Black Horizon
10. Currents of Electrostasy
11. Where Shadows Make Shadows
12. 200 Years Ago

Sat, 21 Mar 2009I agree. Hecker's work is in a bit of a rut, and for someone so powerful to keep pressing the same buttons is a little disappointing.

I do think it is interesting though, that if any number of 'beat friendly' electronic artists produced an album with one or two tracks of the same aptitude and style as Hecker, they would be stuck up in 'album of the year territory' by most writers.

I am grateful for the journalists honesty, and ability to see stagnation in a field that is often rendered... More

Fri, 20 Mar 2009ok,I don't understand why everybody's overreacting here.Hecker has done wonderful works and this is not his best for sure...some things are not meant to be!
I agree with Joshua's 3 .it doesn't mean that it's completely crap anyway....peace people, everybody makes mistakes ,but this was a fair review.

Fri, 20 Mar 2009trouble with a five star scale is that youll always end up like this. 5 is perfect which i dont think tims ever produced. All the others are definite fours and this isnt quite as good so a three is fine. His album with aidan baker of nadja that just came out is much better

Fri, 20 Mar 2009i agree with the score. relative to tim hecker's previous work, this is a 3.

Thu, 19 Mar 2009I've been a big fan of Hecker's since Jetone but found An Imaginary Landscape to be largely unengaging. I did not compare it with Jetone - they're completely different beasts - merely mentioned that a return to rhythm might positively affect his non-rhythmic work. Perhaps I'm alone here, and perhaps the score was unduly low - I've never been good with numbers, just check the comments on my other reviews - but I did not hear a 'new sound' here, and think his music is in something of a rut.... More
