- The Brooklyn duo's illbient classic, EFS, will see a re-release later this month.
Athletikk Records are set to re-release the debut full-length by H.E.A.D, a group that claims to have helped to kickstart New York's illbient movement in the mid-90s.
We're inclined to believe 'em, as the album, entitled EFS, was originally released on German label Blue, and was so influential that London's FatCat Records covered a whole wall of their shop with copies of the release. The Brooklyn-based duo then went on to sign a deal with EMI sub-label Harvest, who'd previously signed major artists such as Pink Floyd and Can. Not bad for a group who claim that their main audience before all this were the cockroaches in their kitchen-cum-studio.
Illbient doesn't always necessarily mean ambient, and while there are some more restrained tracks that are coated in shortwave radio samples, the rest of the record takes its cues from German techno and Drexciyan electro amongst other influences. The new package also includes a brand new remix from H.E.A.D, which is a tech-house version of "Into Your Head" from their 1996 effort, James Dean.
