Pendle Coven unveil debut album

The Burnley-based duo will release Self Assessment on Modern Love later this year.

Dubbed-out techno fans take note: Pendle Coven are due to release their debut full-length next month.

The Burnley-based duo of Gary Howell and Miles Whittaker (who also produces as MLZ) are the last of Modern Love's three main acts to release an album, after a string of acclaimed singles that stretch all the way back to 2003. Five tracks from their vinyl releases have found their way onto their Self Assesment CD, including all three cuts from their recent Iamnoman EP, but there's plenty of new material for hardcore Coven fans to get their teeth into.

If you've been following the duo's sound, then you'll already be well aware of their ongoing love affair with deep Berlin techno. But Howell and Whittaker manage to put their own spin on things by injecting their tracks with elements from some of their other beloved genres. Whether it's with the broken beats of dubstep ("Unit 6"), or the gentle inflections of electronic ambience ("Golden Hadron"), you can think of their music as a fresh twist on a modern classic.

Tracklist
01. Aged Drone
02. Iamnoman
03. Unit 6
04. Uncivil Engineering (CALM Mix)
05. Optimal
06. Modern Mode
07. Chord Calculus
08. Nice Moves
09. MVO Chamber
10. Golden Hadron
11. Exigen

Modern Love will release Self Assessment on March 9th, 2009.comment 11 Comments

Mon, 13 Apr 2009This is LP is fucking excellent; I am really enjoying it. Sounds like 4 or 4.5 stars in my ears. Imaginative and interesting dub techno with great dynamics.

Wed, 01 Apr 2009Like this album a lot. Less aggressive than some of the 12s, smoother sound more suited to LP format. ?

Tue, 31 Mar 2009Double Plus Good (I think 3/5 is a little harsh, it deserves at least a 4/5)

Tue, 31 Mar 2009As someone hitherto unfamiliar with Pendle Coven, I think this is a fantastic album. I never would have guessed it was partly a collection of tracks- as the review says, the album plays out exceptionally well as a whole. So far I'm having much more fun with this than with Intelecto's 'Warehouse Sessions.'
