La Roux, Matthew Herbert faves The Invisible, Friendly Fires and Florence and the Machine are among the nominees for the 2009 Barclaycard Mercury Prize.

The group of contenders was announced today in advance of the annual September award show. The prize, founded in 1992, was begun with the idea of celebrating the achievements of British and Irish musicians. Winners have included Primal Scream, Portishead, Roni Size, Talvin Singh, Dizzee Rascal and Klaxons. Aside from having Mercury Prize-winning attached to your name for a few months afterwards and a piece of metal for the mantle, there's a £20,000 prize. This year, it will be given out in early September.

Bat For Lashes, Glasvegas, Kasabian, Lisa Hannigan, The Horrors, Led Bib, Sweet Billy Pilgrim and Speech Debelle round out the cast of nominees.

The Mercury Prize will be awarded September 8, 2009.comment 6 Comments

Thu, 23 Jul 2009Oh yeah, and quite how the Manics latest didn't make it and the bleedin' godawful Horrors did, god alone knows.

I think I need another picture of 'tash to console me...

Double yum.... More

Thu, 23 Jul 2009Friendly Fires, Glasvegas and Bat For Lashes were my faves and despite their elaborately constructed goth pomposity I'm kinda surprised White Lies didn't get in.

I hope Bat For Lashes win tbh though, not just cos it's an excellent album but cos I fancy the undercrackers off Natasha...

Yum.... More
